Created with the intent of protecting users’ private communications, Signal has however become a “free port” for criminals who exploit the anonymity offered by the platform. After Telegram gave in to pressure to collaborate with the authorities in cases of crime, Signal remains one of the last platforms not to provide any access to law enforcement, thus creating a dangerous refuge for criminal activities, including – precisely – child abuse. And in the meantime there are those who, instead of denouncing and fighting this dramatic scourge, are even trying to normalize it.
