Il più grande rivale politico di Erdoğan in vista delle elezioni presidenziali del 2023 sembra essere la povertà.
Il primo decennio del governo di Erdoğan ha effettivamente portato relativa prosperità ai turchi. Il PIL pro capite è aumentato bruscamente da $ 3.688 nel 2002 a $ 11.796 nel 2012 … Dal 2013, tuttavia, il nepotismo sconsiderato, l’aumento dell’autoritarismo, la corruzione e la cattiva gestione economica hanno aumentato i tassi di interesse, l’inflazione e la disoccupazione, portando il PIL pro capite a circa $ 7.500.

Erdoğan si sta dirigendo rapidamente verso la vittima dei suoi stessi errori di calcolo: un’economia drammaticamente mal gestita e sfide geostrategiche che andavano oltre la potenza politica e militare della Turchia.
Forse questi passi falsi saranno l’inizio della fine del brutto populismo di Erdoğan – le sue ambizioni neo-ottomane che hanno causato gravi danni all’economia turca e all’isolamento internazionale del paese.

The first decade of Erdoğan’s rule actually brought relative prosperity to Turks. Per capita GDP rose sharply from $3,688 in 2002 to $11,796 in 2012… Since 2013, however, reckless nepotism, increasing authoritarianism, corruption and economic mismanagement have boosted interest-rates, inflation and unemployment, bringing per capita GDP down to an estimated $7,500.

Unfortunately, since early 2018, the lira has been on a downward slide due to constant geopolitical tensions with the West, widening current account deficits, shrinking foreign currency reserves and mounting public debt.
As the lira crashes to insane historic lows, local salaries are also severely devalued.
Erdoğan is heading fast to becoming the victim of his own miscalculations: a dramatically mismanaged economy and geostrategic challenges that went beyond Turkey’s political and military might.
Perhaps these missteps will be the beginning of the end of Erdoğan’s ugly populism — his neo-Ottoman ambitions that have caused major damage to Turkey’s economy as well as the country’s international isolation.

VINCE LA CANCEL CULTURE
Le uniche risposte formulate sin qui agli estremismi antirazzisti fanno uso di argomenti liberali, di destra o di sinistra. Ma così viene elusa una sfida che invece dobbiamo raccogliere
Da quando non c’è più Donald Trump alla Casa Bianca e, relativamente all’Italia, Matteo Salvini al Viminale, improvvisamente c’è tutta un’opinione pubblica liberal-riformista e progressista che si è resa conto della deriva intollerante presa da certa sinistra a trazione americana. Fenomeni come la cancel culture, l’ideologia intersezionale, il fondamentalismo politicamente corretto diventano ora materia di discussione anche in alcuni circoli dei buoni. L’impressione è che se ne fossero accorti anche prima ma, per non rischiare l’accusa di intelligenza col nemico, facessero finta di niente. Fatto sta che da varie voci liberal comincia a trasparire una certa insofferenza verso gli estremismi intersezionali.
Ora, si potrebbe dire: che avvenga presto o tardi, in buona o in cattiva fede, più persone si oppongono a certe follie, meglio è, no? In parte questo è vero. Il punto, tuttavia, è che le risposte dei liberali di sinistra alla cancel culture sono del tutto inservibili, tanto quanto lo sono quelle dei liberali di destra, che poi, insieme, esauriscono la totalità delle soluzioni formulate sin qui. Agli invasati dei campus americani, la sinistra oppone sostanzialmente argomenti formali: il dibattito ordinato, la tolleranza, la logica della complessità. La destra oppone invece argomenti sostanziali: la difesa di quei «valori occidentali» bianchi, cristiani, patriarcali, imperialisti etc. che la nuova sinistra contesta. Entrambi i dispositivi teorici, tuttavia, appaiono completamente fuori tempo.
Opporre i «valori tradizionali» o la «tolleranza liberale» alla cancel culture è un po’ come invocare la saggezza delle vecchie diplomazie subito dopo l’attentato di Sarajevo o i valori del garantismo carcerario nelle prigioni ucraine dell’Nkvd. Sono meccanismi che non scattano più, pratiche superate da salti di qualità che qualcuno deve essersi perso. Quando avviene una sfida politica e culturale in grande stile, si può rispondere efficacemente solo ponendosi sul nuovo livello dello scontro.
Cultura della cancellazione e intersezionalità politicizzano la nostra storia, la nostra pelle, i nostri cromosomi, tutti i livelli della nostra identità. Ci mostrano che tutte quelle che consideriamo ovvietà sono in realtà stratificazioni di ideologie. Ovviamente lo fanno distorcendo e colpevolizzando. Ma se dobbiamo rispedire al mittente la colpevolizzazione, la politicizzazione radicale deve invece essere raccolta.
La reazione di molti bravi borghesi bianchi progressisti che si sentono rispondere sui social «non puoi parlare perché sei bianco» è di stupore: non sapevano di esserlo. Credevano all’universalismo, all’Uomo con la u maiuscola, che per pura casualità assomigliava proprio a loro. Si ritenevano portatori della storia dell’umanità, ora arrivano delle attiviste con i capelli viola a dire loro che sono portatori di una storia particolare. Chi abbia una mentalità rivoluzionaria capirà al volo le potenzialità identitarie di questa fase. Gli altri costruiranno barricate contro i barbari alle porte. E perderanno. I barbari vincono sempre.

Despite the challenges of complying with her school’s COVID-19 guidelines, Lydia was looking forward to an exciting year ahead in third grade, particularly her favorite subject, math.
Since she was required to wear a mask to school, Lydia took the opportunity – along with classmates and students across the country – to express herself through her mask. As a Christian, Lydia believes that Jesus loves people and wants people to trust in Him, so her mask read: “Jesus Loves Me.”
Although she had worn the mask several times, and no student had objected to its message, school officials pulled her aside and forced her to remove the mask, and then retroactively changed the policy to justify their discrimination.

Today, I have the privilege of sharing with you the story of a precious baby girl named Ruth. Back in August, her Nigerian village was attacked by armed Fulani militants. A recent downpour of rain made it so that the riverbanks flooded, leaving the villagers with no escape.
Those who did try to escape, including Ruth’s mother, were tracked down by their footprints in the mud. She pled with the attackers to spare her daughter. Assuming that Ruth would die from the elements anyways, they cast her aside and then tragically killed her mother along with several other family members.
By the grace of God, baby Ruth survived! Through your generosity, we had the honor of providing items to assist Ruth’s caregivers as they take care of this miracle baby. We thank God for her life and look forward to what He has in store for her in the future.
