Leader cristiano: Vergogna per le parole del guru indù sullo stupro di New Delhi

Il
santone Asaram Bapu ha definito la vittima “ugualmente responsabile”
per la violenza subita. Contro il guru, pende un accusa di omicidio per
la morte di due bambini nel suo ashram. Presidente del Global Council of
Indian Christians (Gcic): “Questa mentalità distorta spaventa le donne e
impedisce loro di denunciare le aggressioni”. In aumento gli abusi
contro le donne tribali e dalit.
Mumbai (AsiaNews) – “Irresponsabili”, “vergognose” e “offensive della dignità umana”: Sajan George, presidente del Global Council of Indian Christians (Gcic), definisce così le esternazioni del santone indù Asaram Bapu (v. foto) sullo stupro di New Delhi,
che hanno causato grande indignazione in tutto l’India. In un raduno
religioso, il guru ha definito la vittima – una ragazza di 23 anni –
“ugualmente responsabile” per il crimine, perché “avrebbe dovuto
chiamare i suoi aggressori ‘fratelli’, toccare le loro mani e i loro
piedi, e pregarli di fermarsi”. In questo modo, ha aggiunto Asaram,
“ella avrebbe salvato la sua dignità e la sua vita. Si può applaudire
con una sola mano? Non credo”.
La stragrande maggioranza della società civile si è scagliata contro
le affermazioni del santone, per le quali tuttavia non ha voluto
chiedere scusa. In sua difesa è intervenuta Neelam Dubey, la sua
portavoce. A una tv privata, la donna ha dichiarato che le parole di
Asaram sono state fraintese ed estrapolate dal contesto, un satsang
(raduno indù di preghiera) con oltre 100mila persone. “Egli – ha
specificato la Dubey – voleva dire che gli uomini sono responsabili, ma
la ragazza ha uno 0,1% di colpa per essere salita su quell’autobus. Se
avesse scelto un autobus pieno o con altri uomini, non sarebbe incappata
in questa situazione. Se avesse pregato, allora qualcosa le avrebbe
impedito di prendere il mezzo, e avrebbe fermato gli uomini”.
Secondo Sajan George, “la mentalità distorta di Asaram, che ha
numerosi seguaci, rischia di spaventare le donne e frenarle dal
denunciare le atrocità, le violenze e gli abusi di cui sono vittime”. Il
presidente del Gcic ricorda poi che “questo sedicente guru è coinvolto
in una torbida storia, legata alla morte di due ragazzini nel suo
ashram, nel 2008”. Da tempo l’ex giudice D K Trivedi conduce un’indagine
per omicidio su Asaram.
“La violenza contro le donne – sottolinea il leader cristiano – ha raggiunto livelli allarmanti. Secondo il National Crime Records Bureau,
ogni 20 minuti in India una donna viene stuprata, e ogni due ore [una
donna] è uccisa per ragioni legate alla dote”. Inoltre, aggiunge, “gli
abusi e le violenze peggiori avvengono nelle aree a maggioranza tribale e
dalit. E in larga parte, questi casi non vengono denunciati”. In tutto
il Paese, il numero delle vittime appartenenti alle Scheduled Tribe
(St) è salito del 40% tra il 2009 e il 2010. Nello stesso periodo, è
cresciuta del 15% la percentuale di stupri contro donne delle Scheduled Caste (Sc).

For Christian leader, statement by Hindu guru on New Delhi rape case is shameful

Guru Asaram Bapu, the victim is “as guilty as her rapists”. But
homicide charges hang over him over the death of two children in his
ashram. For the president of the Global Council of Indian Christians,
his “distorted mindset [. . .] scares women, stopping them back from
going to the police”. Abuses against tribal and Dalit women are up.
Mumbai (AsiaNews) – For Sajan George, president of the Global Council of Indian Christians
(GCIC), the statement on the New
Delhi rape case by Hindu guru Asaram Bapu (pictured) is “irresponsible, shameful and offensive to human
dignity.” Across India, it has caused outrage.
Speaking at a religious gathering, the spiritual leader said, that the
23-year-old woman was “as guilty as her rapists.” In his view, “She should have
called the culprits brothers and begged them to stop.” In so doing, she would “have
saved her dignity and life. Can one hand clap?” he said. “I don’t think so”.
Despite the fact that most Indians have reacted with outrage to his
words, the guru has been unapologetic. His spokeswoman, Neelam Dubey, has come
to his defence, saying that his remarks have been misunderstood and taken out
of context.
Speaking at a satsang or
prayer gathering that had attracted more than 100,000 people, he said that “The
men are responsible,” she explained. However, “she is 0.1 per cent responsible
for getting into such a bus. If she had got on to a full bus or a bus with men,
she wouldn’t have faced this. If she had prayed, then some idea would have
struck her and then reported the men.”
According to Sajan George, “Asaram’s distorted mindset, and that of many
of his followers, scares women, stopping them from going to the police to file
complaints against abuses and acts of violence against them.”
What is more, “This so-called guru was involved in a sordid story in
connection with the death of two boys in his ashram in 2008,” the GCIC
president explained.
Retired judge D K Trivedi has headed a commission investigating the case
as possible homicide.
In India, “Violence against women has reached alarming levels,” George
said. “According to the National Crime
Records Bureau, a woman is raped every 20 minutes. Every two hours, one
is killed over her dowry. Abuses and violence are the worst in tribal and Dalit
areas. In most cases, they are not reported,” he noted.
The number of victims from Scheduled Tribes jumped 40 per cent between
2009 and 2010. In the same period, the number of rapes against women from
Scheduled Castes rose by 15 per cent.
