The news media have been demanding more censorship by governments of social media platforms for over a decade, and those demands intensified after the elections of Trump in 2016 and of Jair Bolsonaro in Brazil in 2018, which the media blamed on “misinformation” and “foreign influence” to delegitimize those candidates. A proposed “Fake News Bill” was an attempt by the ruling Workers Party and the news media to censor social media and shake down social media companies for money for legacy and other state-controlled media. The governments of Canada and Australia have tried to do the same thing.
