However, disability benefits and government support for displaced individuals are insufficient to meet the family’s needs. After his recovery, Beglaryan plans to pursue computer work while his wife is considering starting a small business. They hope they can soon find support programs for their family. “I accept my situation, but at least I am with my family,” Beglaryan said. “I know the hell I survived, while hundreds around me did not.” Surrounded by Death Before the explosion, the Stepanakert hospital was relatively quiet. Some of the wounded from the military attack on Sept. 19 were already being transferred to health centers in Armenia, while most doctors and medical staff had either fled or were preparing for forced displacement. “When I heard the explosion, my first thought was that there should be no more war,” said Grigory Arstamyan, who once led the Emergency Medical Care Department at the Stepanakert Republican Hospital. “What I witnessed was something we had never seen, even in a horror movie. Treating patients with such extensive burns required significant resources, which the hospitals in Artsakh lacked after nearly 10 months of blockade. “The burns were so severe and deep that even my fingers, despite wearing gloves, were burned after just a few hours. Their bodies were boiling.” Dr. Arstamyan said the few remaining medical personnel were physically and psychologically exhausted. In addition to fatigue, they were burdened by the consequences of the blockade and the unbearable thoughts of leaving their homeland. They did their best to assist with limited supplies. The hospital had been overrun by patients caught in the explosion. About 100 patients were admitted in the first 40 minutes, and the number continued to rise. Many arrived on foot. The large influx of patients exceeded the resources available to care for them. I had no idea I could be saved. The only thing that came to my mind was my child, and with the urge to see him, I somehow summoned the strength to pull myself free from the burning debris.”
After the explosion, Beglaryan went to the hospital, where he received inadequate first aid for two days before being transferred to another hospital in Armenia. His entire body was severely burned. His father also was injured in the explosion. Beglaryan is currently undergoing intensive treatment in Yerevan and is awaiting a leg prosthesis, as he is classified as a first-degree disabled person. Although he has not fully recovered, he wants to learn a new craft and find employment. Originally from Shushi in Nagorno-Karabakh, his family was internally displaced after the 2020 war and moved to Stepanakert. Following the forced displacement in 2023, they now rent a house in Mughni, Armenia, where rent is more affordable than in Yerevan. However, disability benefits and government support for displaced individuals are insufficient to meet the family’s needs. After his recovery, Beglaryan plans to pursue computer work while his wife is considering starting a small business. They hope they can soon find support programs for their family. “I accept my situation, but at least I am with my family,” Beglaryan said. “I know the hell I survived, while hundreds around me did not.” Surrounded by Death Before the explosion, the Stepanakert hospital was relatively quiet. Some of the wounded from the military attack on Sept. 19 were already being transferred to health centers in Armenia, while most doctors and medical staff had either fled or were preparing for forced displacement. “When I heard the explosion, my first thought was that there should be no more war,” said Grigory Arstamyan, who once led the Emergency Medical Care Department at the Stepanakert Republican Hospital. “What I witnessed was something we had never seen, even in a horror movie. Treating patients with such extensive burns required significant resources, which the hospitals in Artsakh lacked after nearly 10 months of blockade. “The burns were so severe and deep that even my fingers, despite wearing gloves, were burned after just a few hours. Their bodies were boiling.” Dr. Arstamyan said the few remaining medical personnel were physically and psychologically exhausted. In addition to fatigue, they were burdened by the consequences of the blockade and the unbearable thoughts of leaving their homeland. They did their best to assist with limited supplies. The hospital had been overrun by patients caught in the explosion. About 100 patients were admitted in the first 40 minutes, and the number continued to rise. Many arrived on foot. The large influx of patients exceeded the resources available to care for them. Soon, volunteers and relatives of patients flooded into the hospital, offering to help in any way they could. “One elderly volunteer was seen washing the floors, as water was poured over patients with buckets and containers until they could receive first aid,” Dr. Arstamyan recalled. “We just taught strangers how to break an ampoule and give injections.” Due to the overwhelming number of wounded, patients were placed on every floor, and water covered the entire area. Citizens desperately ransacked the city’s half-empty pharmacies, hoping to find necessary medications and painkillers to bring to the hospital. From the outset, it was evident that most of the wounded would not survive. “If there had been only one or two patients with such severe burns, we might have been able to fight for their lives with intensive treatments, but given our conditions, it was impossible,” Dr. Arstamyan said. “Some died in the hospital yard before even reaching the entrance or in the hospital itself. In our presence, someone died every 15 minutes. It’s an unbearable feeling for a doctor.” Those with minor injuries understood their conditions, went home, and returned only the next day. Various people brought medications from their homes, even those they no longer needed. Under these circumstances, several doctors who had already begun to flee left the line and returned to the hospital. “It was impossible to recognize them with that face; I didn’t even recognize my own relatives and friends. Given the situation, we did what we could,” Dr. Arstamyan said with a deep sense of helplessness. He recalled with difficulty the moment his nurse, Bela, realized one of the wounded was her brother. Another one of her brothers had been killed during the military attack on Sept. 19. When her second brother was brought to the hospital, Bela had tried to insert a catheter, only to realize who he was. Then, her third brother arrived at the hospital. It is hard to determine the exact number of those injured in the blast. According to official data from the Artsakh Ministry of Health, there were 290 wounded. Dr. Arustamyan said he believes the number is more than 400. Starting on Sept. 26, those in serious and critical condition were airlifted, with help from the International Committee of the Red Cross, to specialized hospitals in Armenia. According to information from the RA Ministry of Health, around 240 patients received care in various hospitals, with most continuing their treatment in outpatient settings. Many of the wounded are still recovering and receiving therapy from specialists in Stepanakert and at the reopened Caroline Cox Rehabilitation Center in Yerevan.

The only way his mind could make sense of his harsh new reality was to assume the absolute worst had happened. “I thought I was dead and had descended into hell,” Beglaryan recalled. “I found myself in a vast hole, surrounded by fire and people burning in that inferno.” Surviving Hell A soldier, Beglaryan was in position on Sept. 19, 2023, when Azerbaijan launched a large-scale attack on Nagorno-Karabakh/Artsakh. He had already been there for several months, following the blockade of Nagorno-Karabakh, which began on Dec. 12, 2022. During the closure of the Lachin Corridor between Nagorno-Karabakh and Armenia, the struggle for food turned into a desperate fight for survival. Azerbaijan’s starvation tactics and military intimidation forced 120,000 Armenian Christians from their ancestral homeland, prompting many to charge Azerbaijan with ethnic cleansing. Following the Sept. 19 attack, Stepanakert was flooded with thousands of hungry and terrified people who had hastily abandoned their homes and sought refuge in the capital. With fuel supplies winding, many residents from border villages fled on foot through the forests, some without proper footwear. Stepanakert transformed into a vast open-air shelter where people desperately searched for food, warm clothing, and medicine. Their primary concern, however, was finding their relatives. In the absence of communication networks, people frantically ran from one basement to another, seeking information on their loved ones as Azerbaijani forces advanced to the outskirts of Stepanakert. Although the fighting ceased after a day, peace remained elusive. Beglaryan also focused his efforts on ensuring his family’s safety. During Azerbaijan’s blockade of the Lachin corridor, it was also challenging to find fuel. Accompanied by his father, father-in-law, and uncle, Beglaryan ventured to the fuel depot in search of gasoline. Like many others, they scored several locations for the precious resource but ultimately found themselves near the fuel depot. The explosion occurred in an intact Local Ministry of Defense warehouse designated for use in the event of renewed military operations. However, this supposedly secure area proved to be anything but safe for the thousands of desperate citizens who had gathered there. According to the investigative committee of the Republic of Armenia, more than 10,500 gallons of fuel were stored in the warehouse. The blast resulted in at least 219 deaths, with 22 people reported missing and more than 290 people injured. At least half of the victims of the explosion were military personnel and their brothers, fathers, or other relatives who had survived Azerbaijan’s attacks just days earlier. Many families had more than one member affected by the blast, with some losing as many as four loved ones. Four women died during the explosion, including one who died next to her husband. Demographics and the Destiny of Persecuted Christians in Nigeria  ] ISLAMIC THEOLOGY OF SUBSTITUTION UNDER UN AGENDA [ “Demography is destiny,” or so goes the saying, most often attributed to the French philosopher Auguste Comte. Comte accomplished more than most people in his lifetime, being credited as the father of sociology and positivism — two movements that continued with inordinate influence after his death.  Whatever Comte accomplished in his life, he likely did not coin the phrase “Demography is destiny.” The origin of the phrase remains ultimately unknown. But the phrase itself remains a powerful touchstone. The future seems to belong to demographic trends. But what that means precisely is not as simple as it sounds.  For instance, countries in sub-Saharan Africa (particularly the Sahel) are primed to win the demographic battle due to a younger average population and higher birth rates than most other countries worldwide. As previously noted, demography is on the side of Africa, where 19 of the 20 youngest nations on Earth are situated. And yet, for some reason, most cultural prophets and political soothsayers speak of foreboding woes across the African continent. A primary case in point remains Nigeria, where a spirit of gloom and hopelessness is on the rise. While not definitive, the World Bank’s outlook for Nigeria is at least indicative of the overall mood for the nation’s future. These few sentences capture the general tone toward Nigeria’s future:  “Despite having the largest economy and population in Africa, Nigeria offers limited opportunities to most of its citizens. Nigerians born in 2020 are expected to be future workers 36% as productive as they could be if they had full access to education and health, the 7th lowest human capital index in the world. Weak job creation and entrepreneurial prospects stifle the absorption of the 3.5 million Nigerians entering the labor force every year, and many workers choose to emigrate in search of better opportunities. The poverty rate is estimated to have reached 38.9% in 2023, with an estimated 87 million Nigerians living below the poverty line — the world’s second-largest poor population after India.” Destiny is complicated, an intertwined web of population demographics, politics, economics, and environmental conditions. The World Bank in Nigeria also alludes to some environmental conditions. Specifically, desertification and climate-related environmental concerns force its outlook further in the negative direction of angst against the hope of Nigeria’s future. In this fear of the climate, the World Bank does not stand alone. 

Global entities accept as fact the idea that the climate is actively destroying Nigeria’s prospects for a better tomorrow. “Climate change and displacement are increasingly interconnected,” the UNHCR states on its website. “As extreme weather events and environmental conditions worsen with global heating, they are contributing to multiple and overlapping crises, threatening human rights, increasing poverty and loss of livelihoods, straining peaceful relations between communities and, ultimately, creating conditions for further forced displacement.”  Such statements lose the significance of the conditions they are seeking to remedy. Understood grammatically, this UNHCR statement asserts that climate change and displacement will likely create displacement conditions. The ease with which the climate is linked inextricably to forced displacement is magical — a masterful sleight of hand.  In further explanation, the UNHCR aims at four objectives for 2030: People fleeing persecution, violence, and human rights violations occurring in relation to the adverse effects of climate change and disasters who need international protection are effectively protected. 
Forcibly displaced and stateless people and their hosts can access services that promote the sustainable use of natural resources and a clean and healthy environment. 
People forced to flee, stateless people, and their hosts can prepare for, withstand, recover, and be protected from the effects of climate change. 
UNHCR minimizes its own negative effects on the environment. 
In a twist of irony, these four objectives demonstrate that demographics are not destiny. We can see at least three aspects of the irony on display in these objectives. First, the UNHCR is ironically thwarting the demographic makeup of Nigeria by accepting displacement as the new normal. Displacement means the demographic makeup of Nigeria today will not be equal to its demographic makeup next year, as hundreds of thousands — if not millions — of Nigerians will flee their homes. Is such displacement OK? Should Nigerians accept this displacement? Who’s responsible? Shouldn’t they stop? Each of the four UNHCR objectives betrays the responsibility of the Nigerian state to stop the violence and, thus, forestall the fleeing of refugees. Granted, the UNHCR’s role is not to dictate national security prescriptions. Rather, the UNHCR’s lane is to respond to the refugee crisis. Nevertheless, protecting refugees from bad actors by calling out those perpetrating injustice suits the role of the UNHCR better than promising to protect refugees from the global climate. 

In a second display of irony, the UNHCR invokes the need for protecting refugees while refusing to acknowledge the very threat to the refugees. Notice that in each objective, the concern is protection from “the adverse effects of climate change and disasters.” As noted in objective one, people flee persecution, violence, and human rights violations.

Droughts don’t persecute Christians and minority Muslims; people do that. Floods do not commit acts of violence against Protestant Christians; people do that. Storms do not perpetrate human rights violations against Roman Catholics; people do that. In short, the refugees — those fleeing parts of Nigeria — are fleeing other Nigerians. Protecting those refugees from the climate won’t help until the real threat — violent violators of human rights — is named, confronted, and defeated. The UNHCR cannot, of course, carry out all those tasks, but they certainly can (and should) name the agents creating the crises and work to protect refugees from them.

In a third bit of irony, the UNHCR commits to providing protection from the effects of climate change while also taking care to produce a clean and healthy environment. Why is this environmental protection ironic? This is ironic because it pledges a strict ethic for the UNHCR to protect the environment with no hint of holding accountable those who rape, pillage, and destroy people and their villages.

Imagine being a resident of Yobe State’s Geidam District this past year when terrorists shot and killed 17 villagers, murdering them in open violence. Then, continue imagining the nightmare to include an unthinkable scene of the terrorists planting land mines around the funeral area so that 20 mourners attending the funeral were subsequently blown up: the village decimated, body parts strewn upon the land, and souls left as gutted and violently empty as the ground where the land mines were planted. 

Now imagine in your breathless agony reading the following commitment from the UNHCR:

“UNHCR is minimizing our own negative impacts on the environment by reducing our greenhouse gas emissions, transitioning to renewable energy sources, and improving the sustainability of our supply chain.” 

Can such a statement be heard with any hint of sanity? Is there any serious way for Yobe state’s citizens to take comfort or encouragement from this fourth UNHCR objective? The emphasis on protecting the environment is naively ironic. Those who perpetrate evil against humanity show no care for the environment. They use the environment to hide bombs that destroy both land and people. 

The gravity of human loss is overwhelming. The ironic emphases on climate and the environment only serve to hasten the demographic demise of the Sahel’s once most promising nation. It’s difficult to imagine that refugees under attack and fleeing for their lives will be helped by knowing that the UNHCR is committed to cutting emissions. 

These ironic twists deal a severe blow to the premise that demography is destiny. Demography is a significant aspect of future populations, but bad politics, misguided virtue, and ineffective governance all have a way of contorting the destiny of demography. If Nigeria’s future is gloomy, that gloom is not the result of either the climate or the growing population. The gloom springs from a poverty of imagination and a lack of conviction to be guided by truth. If this is true, Christians in Nigeria have an opportunity to be — as Paul says the church should be — a pillar and support of the truth.

Les vitraux de Notre-Dame conçus par Viollet-le-Duc l’ont été comme un ensemble cohérent. Il s’agit d’une véritable création que l’architecte a voulu fidèle à l’origine gothique de la cathédrale. Aux vitraux historiés du déambulatoire, du chœur et du transept s’ajoutent, dans les chapelles de la nef, des verrières purement décoratives en grisaille. Il y a ici une recherche d’unité architecturale et de hiérarchisation de l’espace qui fait partie intégrante de son œuvre et que les travaux avaient notamment pour but de retrouver. D’ailleurs, le chantier en cours a intégré le nettoyage et la consolidation de l’ensemble de ces vitraux. Peu après l’incendie, des menaces avaient pesé sur eux qui, rappelons-le, n’ont pas été touchés ni même détériorés par l’incendie, et qui sont classés monument historique au même titre que l’ensemble du monument. Mais le ministère de la Culture avait été très clair par la voix de la ministre de l’époque : il n’était pas question d’y toucher. C’est pour cette raison que l’hypothèse de leur remplacement n’a jamais été examinée par la Commission nationale du patrimoine et de l’architecture, l’instance chargée de conseiller le ministre pour les travaux importants sur les monuments historiques. Viollet-le-Duc est une figure majeure de l’art français, reconnue par de nombreuses publications et expositions dont celle organisée en 2015 à la Cité de l’architecture et du patrimoine. Pourtant, lors de sa visite à Notre-Dame, vendredi 8 décembre 2023, en même temps qu’il révélait l’excellente nouvelle de la création d’un musée de l’Œuvre dans l’Hôtel-Dieu, Emmanuel Macron a annoncé que les vitraux de six des sept chapelles du bas-côté sud seraient déposés et remplacés par des vitraux contemporains qui feraient l’objet d’un concours. Pour désamorcer les contestations, dont il savait déjà qu’elles seraient fortes, le président de la République a ajouté que ces vitraux seraient exposés dans le musée, ce qui est absurde. Car ces verrières, qui ont – volontairement – des compositions purement décoratives à décors géométriques, n’ont d’intérêt qu’in situ, comme élément à part entière de l’architecture. Elles n’auraient aucun sens hors de celle-ci et prendraient, sans aucun bénéfice pour le public, une place très importante dans les salles de l’Hôtel Dieu en empêchant d’y exposer d’autres œuvres. Si ces vitraux devaient être remplacés, ils finiraient certainement dans des caisses en réserves car les exposer dans le musée viendrait en réalité doubler le scandale de leur dépose.

Quel est le sens de restituer le dernier état historique connu de la cathédrale (avant le 15 avril 2019), celui de Viollet-le-Duc, pour priver l’édifice d’un élément essentiel voulu par celui-ci ? Comment peut-on justifier de restaurer des vitraux qui ont survécu à la catastrophe pour aussitôt les enlever ? Qui a donné mandat au chef de l’État d’altérer une cathédrale qui ne lui appartient pas en propre, mais à tous ? Les vitraux contemporains ont toute leur place dans l’architecture ancienne lorsque ceux d’origine ont disparu. Ils n’ont pas vocation à remplacer des œuvres qui existent déjà. Emmanuel Macron veut poser la marque du XXIe siècle sur Notre-Dame de Paris. Un peu de modestie serait peut-être préférable. Nous ne serons pas assez cruel pour rappeler que cette marque existe déjà : l’incendie. Un incendie certes accidentel, mais pour lequel il a été abondamment démontré que l’État, avant et pendant sa présidence, porte de lourdes responsabilités.

La renaissance de la cathédrale a été rendue possible par une vaste mobilisation nationale et internationale, grâce aux contributions de milliers de donateurs qui souhaitaient la restaurer dans son état historique. Croit-on vraiment que ceux-ci accepteront que sa restauration soit altérée par la volonté d’Emmanuel Macron d’y laisser son empreinte? Les signataires de cette pétition demandent donc que le choix initial du ministère de la Culture de conserver les vitraux voulus par Viollet-le-Duc dans la cathédrale soit respecté, et que la décision du président de la République de doter six des sept chapelles du bas-côté sud de vitraux contemporains soit abandonnée. Cette pétition est lancée par La Tribune de l’Art.
