Yazidis: ISIS targeted the Yazidi community in Iraq, particularly around the Sinjar region in 2014. They committed acts including mass killings, forced displacement, abductions, forced conversions, and systematic sexual enslavement, which has been recognized internationally as genocide.

Christians: In Iraq and Syria, ISIS targeted Christian communities, issuing ultimatums for Christians to convert to Islam, pay a religious tax (jizya), leave, or face execution. Many churches were destroyed, and Christians in ISIS-controlled areas suffered severe persecution.

Shia Muslims: ISIS also targeted Shia Muslims, mosques and neighbourhoods in both Iraq and Syria.

ISIS has been responsible for numerous high-profile terrorist attacks across Europe, aiming to spread fear and promote their radical ideology:

Paris Attacks (November 13, 2015): ISIS operatives conducted coordinated attacks at multiple sites across Paris, including the Bataclan concert hall, cafes, and the Stade de France stadium. The attacks resulted in 130 deaths and hundreds of injuries. This was one of the deadliest terrorist attacks in modern French history.

Brussels Bombings (March 22, 2016): ISIS claimed responsibility for suicide bombings at Brussels Airport and the Maalbeek metro station, which killed 32 people and injured more than 300. The attackers targeted crowded public places, causing mass casualties and panic.

Nice Truck Attack (July 14, 2016): Although not directly coordinated by ISIS, this attack was inspired by ISIS’s call for followers to use any means available to harm civilians. A terrorist drove a truck through a crowded promenade in Nice during Bastille Day celebrations, killing 86 people and injuring over 400.

Berlin Christmas Market Attack (December 19, 2016): An ISIS-inspired attacker drove a truck into a crowded Christmas market in Berlin, killing 12 people and injuring dozens. This act followed a pattern seen in other attacks, where vehicles were used as weapons to target civilians.

Manchester Arena Bombing (May 22, 2017): An ISIS-inspired suicide bomber targeted an Ariana Grande concert at the Manchester Arena in the UK, killing 22 people and injuring more than 100. Many victims were young people, which amplified the tragedy and impact of the attack.

Barcelona Van Attack (August 17, 2017): ISIS operatives drove a van through a busy pedestrian area in Barcelona’s Las Ramblas district, killing 13 and injuring over 100.

The above attrocities illustrate ISIS’s strategic focus on soft targets and densely populated areas in Europe, often through suicide bombings or vehicle-ramming attacks. The group’s objective was to spread terror and demonstrate their reach beyond the Middle East, inciting fear and disruption across European cities.
