What if the Italian Constitution could be used to end innocent lives? What if what happened in France last March, with the inclusion of abortion in the French Constitution – a scandal that echoed throughout the world – could also happen in Italy? It is sad to note that today all of this is closer than ever to becoming a reality. On April 16, the 5 Star Movement MP Gilda Sportiello presented a bill aimed at inserting the right to abortion into the Italian Constitution. This bill, entitled “Amendment to Article 32 of the Constitution regarding the right to voluntary termination of pregnancy”, has already begun its legislative process and is dangerously advancing. This idea, we say it loud and clear, is beyond scandalous. Abortion would be placed among the fundamental values of our country: but the Italian Constitution should always defend life, not destroy it! In Italy there is already a law that allows abortion (and this is already worrying in itself). But this is not enough for abortionists: they want to push for more. Now they want abortion to be a constitutional right in all respects.
And do you know what is most ironic in all of this? Sportiello’s proposal aims to modify Article 32 of our Constitution, which concerns – guess what? – the fundamental right to health!
Article 32 in fact states: “The Republic protects health as a fundamental right of the individual and interest of the community, and guarantees free care to the indigent. No one can be forced to undergo medical treatment unless provided for by law. The law cannot, under any circumstances, violate the limits imposed by respect for the human person”.
But the right to end a human life cannot coincide with the concepts of safeguarding health and respect for the human person. All this is shocking and contradictory!
We are faced with two options that exclude each other: either guarantee respect for human life or allow the killing of unborn children. Tertium non datur! We know perfectly well that abortion can never be a right and that it has nothing to do with the right to control one’s own body. Aborting means controlling the life of another human being and choosing to eliminate it at will. We must emphasize that according to the infamous law 194, abortion is permitted, but it is never considered a right. Now abortion supporters want to change this situation, drastically. Why so much insistence? Because it is not just something symbolic: inserting abortion into the Constitution ensures that it is consecrated, protected and safeguarded from any threat.
We all remember the wave of anguish caused by the decision to enshrine abortion as a constitutional right in France last March. Now, if we don’t act quickly, Italy could be next.
The pressure is mounting, not only from France, but also from the European Union itself.
Italy is on the brink of a dangerous precipice: on April 11, the European Parliament took a serious step by approving the inclusion of abortion in the Charter of Fundamental Rights of the European Union. Just five days later, MEP Sportiello presented her infamous bill in Italy.
