At least 200 refugees including more than 50 children have been stranded in Negombo for nearly three years. Sri Lankan authorities have not yet recognised their right to asylum. The inability to get an education and crime are their most serious problems. “In Pakistan we are treated like enemies” some young people said “but as Christians there is no peace in our country.” Colombo (AsiaNews) – About 200 Pakistani Christians have asked the Catholic Church for help to secure political asylum in Sri Lanka. For almost three years these refugees have been stranded in Negombo (Western Province) without help from the local government. This is especially problematic for the more than 50 children who cannot go to school and for young people who are likely to become victims of crime. “We did not want to leave Pakistan” some of them told AsiaNews “but as Christians there is no peace in our country.” This community of refugees has been supported by members of the Catholic clergy in Negombo in particular by the Claretian Sisters the Sisters of the Holy Family and the Sisters the Good Shepherd as well as Dominican and the Claretian priests. Fr Terrance Bodiyabaduge is in charge of coordinating and distributing the aid provided by local parishioners. Two days ago the church of Kudapaduwa celebrated a special Mass in Urdu for the refugees. At the end of the service the representatives of the clergy met to present their most urgent demands. “We want to make an appeal to the international community” they said “to change Pakistan’s discriminatory laws and help obtain asylum in Sri Lanka on religious social and economic grounds.”
“I know that the Sri Lankan government will not help these people” Fr Bodiyabaduge told AsiaNews. “Only the Catholic Church can do something for them.”
Sharoon John a young Pakistani Christian told AsiaNews that in Pakistan “We are treated as enemies. Wherever we go we are not respected. For example if I wanted to join the police force I would have to bribe some official despite my qualifications just because I am Christian. I can also think of the many threats that we receive if one of us wants to marry a Muslim man or woman.”
One of the greatest threats to their lives are the so-called “blasphemy laws” whereby anyone who desecrates the Qur’an or insults Muhammad can be sentenced to death.
“Because of these rules” the Christians noted “many of our Christian brothers and sisters have fled to other countries to save themselves. Those who did not make it were either killed or jailed for life.”

Infatti in coda ai seggi vi erano migliaia di donne cristiani e anziani i più colpiti dall’attuale clima di caos”. Per l’attivista la vittoria schiacciante del ‘si’ – circa il 98% – è genuina ma purtroppo rispecchia una resa nei confronti del futuro democratico del Paese. “I media di Stato – racconta il giovane – hanno avuto un ruolo decisivo nel successo delle votazioni. Essi hanno esaltato la positività del referendum e della Costituzione assicurando che essa porterà sviluppo e stabilità al Paese ma tutto ciò non è così reale”. Per Thabet i giovani che hanno dato il via alla Primavera araba sono stati ancora una volta messi da parte. “Gli organi di stampa – nota l’attivista – e i leader politici legati all’attuale governo hanno lanciato una campagna di diffamazione nei confronti dei movimenti autori delle proteste del 25 gennaio additandoli come pericolosi criminali e limitando la loro libertà di espressione compresi i giudizi critici contro la Costituzione”. EGYPT. Egyptians approve constitution but al-Sisi loses youth support
For Mina Thabet a leader with the Christian-based Maspero Youth Union many young people boycotted the referendum because it enshrines the hegemony of the military and the anti-protest law that allowed the imprisonment of dozens of pro-democracy activists. The young people who started the Arab Spring have been once again elbowed out. Cairo (AsiaNews) – “The Young people who led the 25 January Revolution against Mubarak are disillusioned with the policies of the military and the interim government who adopted the anti-demonstration law that sent dozens of activists and pro-democracy leaders to jail. This is why many have boycotted the referendum on the constitution” 28-year-old Maspero Youth Union leader Mina Thabet told AsiaNews.
Established in October 2011 to denounce the massacre of Coptic Christians at Maspero the Christian movement has thousands of supporters throughout Egypt. Together with the Tamarud movement it organised the 30 June mass rally that contributed to the downfall of Islamist President Mohamed Morsi. “People chose to vote for stability and security” Thabet said. “Indeed thousands of women Christians and elderly those hardest hit by the chaos queued in front of polling stations.” For the activist the landslide victory for the ‘yes’ – about 98 per cent – is genuine but unfortunately reflects a setback for the country’s democratic future.
“State media played a decisive role in the vote’s success” he explained. “They praised the referendum and the constitution claiming that it would bring stability and development to the country but this is not very likely.” For Thabet the young people who started the Arab Spring were elbowed out once again. “Media and political leaders linked to the current government have undertaken a campaign of defamation against the movements and people behind the 25 January protests. Describing them as dangerous criminals they limited their freedom of expression including the their right to criticise the Constitution.” The notorious anti-protest law is one example of this the Maspero Youth Union leader said. As a result of the new legislation Ahmed Maher as well as Ahmed and Mohamed Adel Douma were arrested; they are among the leaders of the 6 April movement one of main groups of the Arab Spring in Egypt.
Still for Mina Thabet only time will tell whether the vote will have positive or negative outcomes. Even Egypt’s strong man and current Foreign Minister and probable future president General Abdel Fattah El-Sisi is aware of young people’s distrust in the new government and the military. In an appeal a few days before the referendum he encouraged young Egyptians to vote. “You represent the majority of Egyptians” he told them. According to journalist Khaled Diab Egypt has changed in the past three years. People will react should the militaristic past make a comeback.
“Egyptians” he writes “have already overcome and overthrown the most oppressive dictatorship of all the despot inside their minds the tyranny of fear.” In fact “a growing number of people are beginning to see through the current regime’s hollow democratic rhetoric”. (S.C.)

According to the NSA itself the journalists might have been provided with up to 200 top secret documents. Snowden then fled the US for Hong Kong and proceeded to Moscow where he was given a temporary asylum that expires in August 2014.
Snowden denies receiving help from Russia in leaking US secrets – report
Former US spy agency contractor Edward Snowden said he acted alone in leaking US government secrets and that suggestions by some US lawmakers he might have had help from Russia were “absurd” the New Yorker magazine reported on Tuesday. In an interview the magazine said was conducted by encrypted means from Moscow Snowden was quoted as saying “This ‘Russian spy’ push is absurd.”
Snowden said he “clearly and unambiguously acted alone with no help from anyone much less a government” the New Yorker said.

Rogers did not provide specific evidence to back his suggestions of Russian involvement in Snowden’s activities but said “Some of the things we’re finding we would call clues that certainly would indicate to me that he had some help.” Snowden fled the United States last year to Hong Kong and then to Russia where he was granted at least a year of asylum. US officials want him returned to the United States for prosecution. His disclosures of large numbers of stolen US secret documents sparked a debate around the world about the reach of US electronic surveillance. Other US security officials told Reuters as recently as last week that the United States had no evidence that Snowden had any confederates who assisted him or guided him about what National Security Agency materials to hack or how to do so. Snowden told the New York Times in October he did not take any secret NSA documents with him to Russia when he fled there in June 2013. “There’s a zero percent chance the Russians or Chinese have received any documents” he told the Times. Snowden said in the New Yorker interview that if he were a Russian spy “Why Hong Kong?” and why was he stuck for a lengthy period in Moscow’s airport before being allowed to stay in the country.
