Although our press and social media have focused heavily on the controversy of +Europa’s post on traditions and the interruption of Mass in Padua by the thugs of the Last Generation, the real Christmas news passed over in silence is yet another massacre of Christians in Nigeria.

A group of armed men, between the day before and 25 December, raided Christian majority villages in Plateau State, in the central-north of the country, and killed around 160 people. More than three hundred people were injured and transferred to the hospitals of Bokkos, Jos and Barkin Ladi. More than two hundred houses were razed to the ground. The state governor, Caleb Mutfwang, described the actions as “barbaric, brutal and unjustified” by “bandits” who were all identified as Fulani militants.

It is not the first time that Muslim Fulani herdsmen have attacked Christian villages. As Jo Newhoise, spokeswoman for the Open Doors agency, explained, «confirmations on the identity and motive of the attackers will be slow in arriving. But we can build on what we know has happened in this region over a long period of time. We know that farming communities, mostly Christian, have suffered attacks from Fulani (Muslim) militants for many years. Although in the common narrative, the blame for attacks often falls on issues such as climate change, ethnicity, socio-economic or political reasons, in reality the religious element of these attacks should never be underestimated. We have seen defenseless Christians attacked for no reason too many times!
