You cannot imagine the chaos I experienced here in Brussels. worked here for several years and believe me, this is a very intolerant place. If you come to Brussels with a different point of view, if you question the entire project of the EU, they will literally try to silence you, and I can tell you that I have experienced this firsthand. It’s crazy how quickly things escalated and it scares me to think that this isn’t just happening here. I heard about a similar occurrence in Switzerland last month and it’s becoming increasingly common across Europe. Although the law ultimately turned in our favour, the events that took place truly left a dark stain on what is often praised as European democracy.
The events of #16April reminded us how fragile our freedom can be and how quickly it can be challenged, especially for people like us who also live the values we believe in.
We must remain vigilant. The kind of authoritarian censorship I witnessed belongs in the dark chapters of European history, not in today’s society. We must remain steadfast and continue to advocate for the essential features of democracy, including freedom of speech and the right to assemble, every day. For now I’m just happy and relieved that we were able to hold our ground and our dialogue kept going, against all odds. But hey, nothing is self-evident. That’s my post for now.

You cannot imagine the chaos I experienced here in Brussels. The National Conservatism Conference (NatCon) is an annual gathering of prominent figures, scholars, politicians and organizations to discuss important political issues that threaten traditional values.
We were there to gauge how our core values are perceived and discussed within these circles.
It is always essential for us to understand which aspects of our values are embraced and which are neglected by conservative leaders, especially since not everyone defends our goals as vigorously as they may claim.
This year the emphasis was on promoting national sovereignty with conservative ideals.
I’m actually still quite upset. Just imagine: The first day. We are all looking forward to kicking off what is one of the most important Conservative conferences of the year. When the event started I noticed there was quite a commotion going on outside. At first I didn’t attach much importance to it. Probably just the usual “woke” crazies protesting a conservative meeting – something I’ve seen all too often. However, when guest speaker Nigel Farage, a key architect of the Brexit movement and a notable conservative figure in European politics, took the stage, things started to get serious. He was about 5 minutes into his speech when, out of nowhere, police burst into the venue and ordered the event to end immediately. Moreover, they completely closed off the front entrance!
While there was a constant commotion at the entrance, we continued on, ignoring their presence, knowing we were doing nothing wrong and certainly not anything illegal.
I think everyone quickly agreed to do the same – to NOT evacuate the property, but to make sure they would have to kick us out, to show the world what they are capable of!
Meanwhile, Farage continued to talk amid the unfolding farce, slamming the Brussels authorities for their “monstrous” attempt to silence us. And, believe it or not, they even tried to cut the power to silence him! It felt like a real showdown, the kind where you realize you’re witnessing something important. they didn’t use violence, but they didn’t let new people in either. So while we were locked in, the room turned into a kind of fortress in which we were trapped. Even the food became part of the siege drama. Our original caterers were blocked, so we ended up having to “smuggle in” snacks to feed everyone. Talk about an adventure!
As the event continued into the afternoon, the venue was surrounded by police. This meant that we were not allowed to leave and some speakers and guests outside were even denied access.
Quite a chilling scene, don’t you think? At this time, police continued to maintain that they were acting out of concern for public safety, hinting at possible disruptions due to a planned counter-protest. But really, I think they were just embarrassed by how outrageous their interference in the morning had been. This was my view from the inside of the main entrance. Simply mind-boggling! Fortunately, the venue’s owner, a brave soul, made a last-minute deal to allow the event to go ahead, despite immense pressure from the authorities to break it up. It’s been quite a journey, to say the least. By nightfall we weren’t even sure if they would let us back in the next day.
And then, just as things were starting to look bleak, the Belgian Administrative Court upheld the emergency appeal that had been filed and, during the next morning, ruled in our favor.
The police appeared to have entered on the orders of Emir Kir, mayor of this Brussels district, who claimed that “conservative, religious-right” personalities were present at the conference.
And… yes… that NatCon’s view was “not only ethically conservative – but also, hostile to the legalization of abortion, same-sex unions, etc. and in favor of national sovereignty.”
I can’t wrap my head around this – just blatantly doing everything possible to silence any narrative other than theirs – nothing short of totalitarianism in practice!
But make no mistake – the suppression of this conference goes far beyond the orders of a left-wing district mayor. I think it was an eye-opener to the fact that there are certain things you just can’t do in Brussels.
I know this place very well.
