My husband was released in January, and my brother-in-law was released after a six-month sentence in late 2011; my father was sentenced to life in prison. He staged four hunger strikes; the longest lasted 110 days and almost cost him his life. (He was force-fed at a military hospital.) But despite all these sacrifices, the struggle for freedom and democracy in Bahrain seems hopeless because Bahrain’s rulers have powerful allies, including Saudi Arabia and the United States. or Bahrainis, there doesn’t seem to be much of a difference between the Saudis and the Americans. Both are supporting the Khalifa regime to preserve their own interests, even if the cost is the lives and rights of the people of Bahrain. The United States speaks about supporting human rights and democracy, but while the Saudis send troops to aid the Khalifa government, America is sending arms. The United States is doing itself a huge disservice by displaying such an obvious double standard toward human rights violations in the Middle East. Washington condemns the violence of the Syrian government but turns a blind eye to blatant human rights abuses committed by its ally Bahrain. This double standard is costing America its credibility across the region; and the message being understood is that if you are an ally of America, then you can get away with abusing human rights. If the United States is serious about protecting human rights in the Arab world, it should halt all arms sales to Bahrain, bring Bahrain’s abuses to the attention of the United Nations Security Council, support a special session on Bahrain at the United Nations Human Rights Council, and begin a conversation about potential diplomatic and economic sanctions. The Obama administration should also demand that high-level Bahraini officials be held accountable for human rights abuses, and that nongovernmental organizations, United Nations human rights investigators and journalists be allowed to enter the country and investigate abuses.

Papa Fede e ragione per sfuggire alla
violenza e al suicidio dell’ Illuminismo
di Benedetto XVI
Presentiamo qui di seguito il discorso
integrale che Benedetto XVI ha tenuto oggi all’università di
Regensburg.
Nel settimo colloquio (dialexis –
controversia) edito dal prof. Khoury, l’imperatore tocca il tema
della jihād (guerra santa). Sicuramente l’imperatore sapeva che
nella sura 2, 256 si legge “Nessuna costrizione nelle cose di
fede”. È una delle sure del periodo iniziale in cui Maometto
stesso era ancora senza potere e minacciato. Ma, naturalmente,
l’imperatore conosceva anche le disposizioni, sviluppate
successivamente e fissate nel Corano, circa la guerra santa. Senza
soffermarsi sui particolari, come la differenza di trattamento tra
coloro che possiedono il “Libro” e gli “increduli”,
egli, in modo sorprendentemente brusco, si rivolge al suo
interlocutore semplicemente con la domanda centrale sul rapporto tra
religione e violenza in genere, dicendo “Mostrami pure ciò che
Maometto ha portato di nuovo, e vi troverai soltanto delle cose
cattive e disumane, come la sua direttiva di diffondere per mezzo
della spada la fede che egli predicava”. L’imperatore spiega poi
minuziosamente le ragioni per cui la diffusione della fede mediante
la violenza è cosa irragionevole. La violenza è in contrasto con la
natura di Dio e la natura dell’anima. “Dio non si compiace del
sangue; non agire secondo ragione è contrario alla natura di Dio. La
fede è frutto dell’anima, non del corpo. Chi quindi vuole condurre
qualcuno alla fede ha bisogno della capacità di parlare bene e di
ragionare correttamente, non invece della violenza e della minaccia…
Per convincere un’anima ragionevole non è necessario disporre né
del proprio braccio, né di strumenti per colpire né di qualunque
altro mezzo con cui si possa minacciare una persona di morte…”.
L’affermazione decisiva in questa
argomentazione contro la conversione mediante la violenza è non
agire secondo ragione è contrario alla natura di Dio. L’editore,
Theodore Khoury, commenta per l’imperatore, come bizantino cresciuto
nella filosofia greca, quest’affermazione è evidente. Per la
dottrina musulmana, invece, Dio è assolutamente trascendente. La sua
volontà non è legata a nessuna delle nostre categorie, fosse anche
quella della ragionevolezza. In questo contesto Khoury cita un’opera
del noto islamista francese R. Arnaldez, il quale rileva che Ibn Hazn
si spinge fino a dichiarare che Dio non sarebbe legato neanche dalla
sua stessa parola e che niente lo obbligherebbe a rivelare a noi la
verità. Se fosse sua volontà, l’uomo dovrebbe praticare anche
l’idolatria.
Qui si apre,
nella comprensione di Dio e quindi nella realizzazione concreta della
religione, un dilemma che oggi ci sfida in modo molto diretto. La
convinzione che agire contro la ragione sia in contraddizione con la
natura di Dio, è soltanto un pensiero greco o vale sempre e per se
stesso? Io penso che in questo punto si manifesti la profonda
concordanza tra ciò che è greco nel senso migliore e ciò che è
fede in Dio sul fondamento della Bibbia. Modificando il primo
versetto del Libro della Genesi, Giovanni ha iniziato il prologo del
suo Vangelo con le parole “In principio era il Logos”. È
questa proprio la stessa parola che usa l’imperatore Dio agisce con
logos. Logos significa insieme ragione e parola – una ragione che è
creatrice e capace di comunicarsi ma, appunto, come ragione. Giovanni
con ciò ci ha donato la parola conclusiva sul concetto biblico di
Dio, la parola in cui tutte le vie spesso faticose e tortuose della
fede biblica raggiungono la loro meta, trovano la loro sintesi. In
principio era il logos, e il logos è Dio, ci dice l’evangelista.
L’incontro tra il messaggio biblico e il pensiero greco non era un
semplice caso. La visione di san Paolo, davanti al quale si erano
chiuse le vie dell’Asia e che, in sogno, vide un Macedone e sentì la
sua supplica “Passa in Macedonia e aiutaci!” (cfr At
16,6-10) – questa visione può essere interpretata come una
“condensazione” della necessità intrinseca di un
avvicinamento tra la fede biblica e l’interrogarsi greco.
In realtà, questo avvicinamento ormai
era avviato da molto tempo. Già il nome misterioso di Dio dal roveto
ardente, che distacca questo Dio dall’insieme delle divinità con
molteplici nomi affermando soltanto il suo essere, è, nei confronti
del mito, una contestazione con la quale sta in intima analogia il
tentativo di Socrate di vincere e superare il mito stesso. Il
processo iniziato presso il roveto raggiunge, all’interno dell’Antico
Testamento, una nuova maturità durante l’esilio, dove il Dio
d’Israele, ora privo della Terra e del culto, si annuncia come il Dio
del cielo e della terra, presentandosi con una semplice formula che
prolunga la parola del roveto “Io sono”. Con questa nuova
conoscenza di Dio va di pari passo una specie di illuminismo, che si
esprime in modo drastico nella derisione delle divinità che sono
soltanto opera delle mani dell’uomo (cfr Sal 115). Così, nonostante
tutta la durezza del disaccordo con i sovrani ellenistici, che
volevano ottenere con la forza l’adeguamento allo stile di vita greco
e al loro culto idolatrico, la fede biblica, durante l’epoca
ellenistica, andava interiormente incontro alla parte migliore del
pensiero greco, fino ad un contatto vicendevole che si è poi
realizzato specialmente nella tarda letteratura sapienziale. Oggi noi
sappiamo che la traduzione greca dell’Antico Testamento, realizzata
in Alessandria – la “Settanta” –, è più di una
semplice (da valutare forse in modo poco positivo) traduzione del
testo ebraico è infatti una testimonianza testuale a se stante e
uno specifico importante passo della storia della Rivelazione, nel
quale si è realizzato questo incontro in un modo che per la nascita
del cristianesimo e la sua divulgazione ha avuto un significato
decisivo. Nel profondo, vi si tratta dell’incontro tra fede e
ragione, tra autentico illuminismo e religione. Partendo veramente
dall’intima natura della fede cristiana e, al contempo, dalla natura
del pensiero ellenistico fuso ormai con la fede, Manuele II poteva
dire Non agire “con il logos” è contrario alla natura di
Dio.
Per onestà bisogna annotare a questo
punto che, nel tardo Medioevo, si sono sviluppate nella teologia
tendenze che rompono questa sintesi tra spirito greco e spirito
cristiano. In contrasto con il cosiddetto intellettualismo
agostiniano e tomista iniziò con Duns Scoto una impostazione
volontaristica, la quale alla fine portò all’affermazione che noi di
Dio conosceremmo soltanto la voluntas ordinata. Al di là di essa
esisterebbe la libertà di Dio, in virtù della quale Egli avrebbe
potuto creare e fare anche il contrario di tutto ciò che
effettivamente ha fatto. Qui si profilano delle posizioni che,
senz’altro, possono avvicinarsi a quelle di Ibn Hazn e potrebbero
portare fino all’immagine di un Dio-Arbitrio, che non è legato
neanche alla verità e al bene. La trascendenza e la diversità di
Dio vengono accentuate in modo così esagerato, che anche la nostra
ragione, il nostro senso del vero e del bene non sono più un vero
specchio di Dio, le cui possibilità abissali rimangono per noi
eternamente irraggiungibili e nascoste dietro le sue decisioni
effettive. In contrasto con ciò, la fede della Chiesa si è sempre
attenuta alla convinzione che tra Dio e noi, tra il suo eterno
Spirito creatore e la nostra ragione creata esista una vera analogia,
in cui certo le dissomiglianze sono infinitamente più grandi delle
somiglianze, non tuttavia fino al punto da abolire l’analogia e il
suo linguaggio (cfr Lat IV). Dio non diventa più divino per il fatto
che lo spingiamo lontano da noi in un volontarismo puro ed
impenetrabile, ma il Dio veramente divino è quel Dio che si è
mostrato come logos e come logos ha agito e agisce pieno di amore in
nostro favore. Certo, l’amore “sorpassa” la conoscenza ed è
per questo capace di percepire più del semplice pensiero (cfr Ef
3,19), tuttavia esso rimane l’amore del Dio-logos, per cui il culto
cristiano è logikè latreia” – un culto che concorda con il
Verbo eterno e con la nostra ragione (cfr Rm 12,1).
Il qui accennato vicendevole
avvicinamento interiore, che si è avuto tra la fede biblica e
l’interrogarsi sul piano filosofico del pensiero greco, è un dato di
importanza decisiva non solo dal punto di vista della storia delle
religioni, ma anche da quello della storia universale – un dato che
ci obbliga anche oggi. Considerato questo incontro, non è
sorprendente che il cristianesimo, nonostante la sua origine e
qualche suo sviluppo importante nell’Oriente, abbia infine trovato la
sua impronta storicamente decisiva in Europa. Possiamo esprimerlo
anche inversamente questo incontro, al quale si aggiunge
successivamente ancora il patrimonio di Roma, ha creato l’Europa e
rimane il fondamento di ciò che, con ragione, si può chiamare
Europa.
Alla tesi che il patrimonio greco,
criticamente purificato, sia una parte integrante della fede
cristiana, si oppone la richiesta della dis-ellenizzazione del
cristianesimo – una richiesta che dall’inizio dell’età moderna
domina in modo crescente la ricerca teologica. Visto più da vicino,
si possono osservare tre onde nel programma della dis-ellenizzazione:
pur collegate tra di loro, esse tuttavia nelle loro motivazioni e nei
loro obiettivi sono chiaramente distinte l’una dall’altra.
La dis-ellenizzazione emerge dapprima
in connessione con i postulati fondamentali della Riforma del XVI
secolo. Considerando la tradizione delle scuole teologiche, i
riformatori si vedevano di fronte ad una sistematizzazione della fede
condizionata totalmente dalla filosofia, di fronte cioè ad una
determinazione della fede dall’esterno in forza di un modo di pensare
che non derivava da essa. Così la fede non appariva più come
vivente parola storica, ma come elemento inserito nella struttura di
un sistema filosofico. Il sola Scriptura invece cerca la pura forma
primordiale della fede, come essa è presente originariamente nella
Parola biblica. La metafisica appare come un presupposto derivante da
altra fonte, da cui occorre liberare la fede per farla tornare ad
essere totalmente se stessa. Con la sua affermazione di aver dovuto
accantonare il pensare per far spazio alla fede, Kant ha agito in
base a questo programma con una radicalità imprevedibile per i
riformatori. Con ciò egli ha ancorato la fede esclusivamente alla
ragione pratica, negandole l’accesso al tutto della realtà.
La teologia liberale del XIX e del XX
secolo apportò una seconda onda nel programma della
dis-ellenizzazione di essa rappresentante eminente è Adolf von
Harnack. Durante il tempo dei miei studi, come nei primi anni della
mia attività accademica, questo programma era fortemente operante
anche nella teologia cattolica. Come punto di partenza era utilizzata
la distinzione di Pascal tra il Dio dei filosofi ed il Dio di Abramo,
Isacco e Giacobbe. Nella mia prolusione a Bonn, nel 1959, ho cercato
di affrontare questo argomento. Non intendo riprendere qui tutto il
discorso. Vorrei però tentare di mettere in luce almeno brevemente
la novità che caratterizzava questa seconda onda di
dis-ellenizzazione rispetto alla prima. Come pensiero centrale
appare, in Harnack, il ritorno al semplice uomo Gesù e al suo
messaggio semplice, che verrebbe prima di tutte le teologizzazioni e,
appunto, anche prima delle ellenizzazioni sarebbe questo messaggio
semplice che costituirebbe il vero culmine dello sviluppo religioso
dell’umanità. Gesù avrebbe dato un addio al culto in favore della
morale. In definitiva, Egli viene rappresentato come padre di un
messaggio morale umanitario. Lo scopo di ciò è in fondo di
riportare il cristianesimo in armonia con la ragione moderna,
liberandolo, appunto, da elementi apparentemente filosofici e
teologici, come per esempio la fede nella divinità di Cristo e nella
trinità di Dio. In questo senso, l’esegesi storico-critica del Nuovo
Testamento sistema nuovamente la teologia nel cosmo dell’università:
teologia, per Harnack, è qualcosa di essenzialmente storico e quindi
di strettamente scientifico. Ciò che essa indaga su Gesù mediante
la critica è, per così dire, espressione della ragione pratica e di
conseguenza anche sostenibile nell’insieme dell’università. Nel
sottofondo c’è l’autolimitazione moderna della ragione, espressa in
modo classico nelle “critiche” di Kant, nel frattempo però
ulteriormente radicalizzata dal pensiero delle scienze naturali.
Questo concetto moderno della ragione si basa, per dirla in breve, su
una sintesi tra platonismo (cartesianismo) ed empirismo, che il
successo tecnico ha confermato. Da una parte si presuppone la
struttura matematica della materia, la sua per così dire razionalità
intrinseca, che rende possibile comprenderla ed usarla nella sua
efficacia operativa questo presupposto di fondo è, per così dire,
l’elemento platonico nel concetto moderno della natura. Dall’altra
parte, si tratta della utilizzabilità funzionale della natura per i
nostri scopi, dove solo la possibilità di controllare verità o
falsità mediante l’esperimento fornisce la certezza decisiva. Il
peso tra i due poli può, a seconda delle circostanze, stare più
dall’una o più dall’altra parte. Un pensatore così strettamente
positivista come J. Monod si è dichiarato convinto platonico o
cartesiano.
Questo comporta due orientamenti
fondamentali decisivi per la nostra questione. Soltanto il tipo di
certezza derivante dalla sinergia di matematica ed empiria ci
permette di parlare di scientificità. Ciò che pretende di essere
scienza deve confrontarsi con questo criterio. E così anche le
scienze che riguardano le cose umane, come la storia, la psicologia,
la sociologia e la filosofia, cercano di avvicinarsi a questo canone
della scientificità. Importante per le nostre riflessioni, comunque,
è ancora il fatto che il metodo come tale esclude il problema Dio,
facendolo apparire come problema ascientifico o pre-scientifico. Con
questo, però, ci troviamo davanti ad una riduzione del raggio di
scienza e ragione che è doveroso mettere in questione.
Torneremo ancora su questo argomento.
Per il momento basta tener presente che, in un tentativo alla luce di
questa prospettiva di conservare alla teologia il carattere di
disciplina “scientifica”, del cristianesimo resterebbe solo
un misero frammento. Ma dobbiamo dire di più è l’uomo stesso che
con ciò subisce una riduzione. Poiché allora gli interrogativi
propriamente umani, cioè quelli del “da dove” e del “verso
dove”, gli interrogativi della religione e dell’ethos, non
possono trovare posto nello spazio della comune ragione descritta
dalla “scienza” e devono essere spostati nell’ambito del
soggettivo. Il soggetto decide, in base alle sue esperienze, che cosa
gli appare religiosamente sostenibile, e la “coscienza”
soggettiva diventa in definitiva l’unica istanza etica. In questo
modo, però, l’ethos e la religione perdono la loro forza di creare
una comunità e scadono nell’ambito della discrezionalità personale.
È questa una condizione pericolosa per l’umanità lo costatiamo
nelle patologie minacciose della religione e della ragione –
patologie che necessariamente devono scoppiare, quando la ragione
viene ridotta a tal punto che le questioni della religione e
dell’ethos non la riguardano più. Ciò che rimane dei tentativi di
costruire un’etica partendo dalle regole dell’evoluzione o dalla
psicologia e dalla sociologia, semplicemente insufficiente.
Prima di giungere alle conclusioni alle
quali mira tutto questo ragionamento, devo accennare ancora
brevemente alla terza onda della dis-ellenizzazione che si diffonde
attualmente. In considerazione dell’incontro con la molteplicità
delle culture si ama dire oggi che la sintesi con l’ellenismo,
compiutasi nella Chiesa antica, sarebbe stata una prima
inculturazione, che non dovrebbe vincolare le altre culture. Queste
dovrebbero avere il diritto di tornare indietro fino al punto che
precedeva quella inculturazione per scoprire il semplice messaggio
del Nuovo Testamento ed inculturarlo poi di nuovo nei loro rispettivi
ambienti. Questa tesi non è semplicemente sbagliata; è tuttavia
grossolana ed imprecisa. Il Nuovo Testamento, infatti, e stato
scritto in lingua greca e porta in se stesso il contatto con lo
spirito greco – un contatto che era maturato nello sviluppo
precedente dell’Antico Testamento. Certamente ci sono elementi nel
processo formativo della Chiesa antica che non devono essere
integrati in tutte le culture. Ma le decisioni di fondo che, appunto,
riguardano il rapporto della fede con la ricerca della ragione umana,
queste decisioni di fondo fanno parte della fede stessa e ne sono gli
sviluppi, conformi alla sua natura.
Con ciò giungo alla conclusione.
Questo tentativo, fatto solo a grandi linee, di critica della ragione
moderna dal suo interno, non include assolutamente l’opinione che ora
si debba ritornare indietro, a prima dell’illuminismo, rigettando le
convinzioni dell’età moderna. Quello che nello sviluppo moderno
dello spirito è valido viene riconosciuto senza riserve tutti siamo
grati per le grandiose possibilità che esso ha aperto all’uomo e per
i progressi nel campo umano che ci sono stati donati. L’ethos della
scientificità, del resto, è volontà di obbedienza alla verità e
quindi espressione di un atteggiamento che fa parte della decisione
di fondo dello spirito cristiano. Non ritiro, non critica negativa è
dunque l’intenzione; si tratta invece di un allargamento del nostro
concetto di ragione e dell’uso di essa. Perché con tutta la gioia di
fronte alle possibilità dell’uomo, vediamo anche le minacce che
emergono da queste possibilità e dobbiamo chiederci come possiamo
dominarle. Ci riusciamo solo se ragione e fede si ritrovano unite in
un modo nuovo; se superiamo la limitazione autodecretata della
ragione a ciò che è verificabile nell’esperimento, e dischiudiamo
ad essa nuovamente tutta la sua ampiezza. In questo senso la
teologia, non soltanto come disciplina storica e umano-scientifica,
ma come teologia vera e propria, cioè come interrogativo sulla
ragione della fede, deve avere il suo posto nell’università e nel
vasto dialogo delle scienze.
Solo così diventiamo anche capaci di
un vero dialogo delle culture e delle religioni – un dialogo di cui
abbiamo un così urgente bisogno. Nel mondo occidentale domina
largamente l’opinione, che soltanto la ragione positivista e le forme
di filosofia da essa derivanti siano universali. Ma le culture
profondamente religiose del mondo vedono proprio in questa esclusione
del divino dall’universalità della ragione un attacco alle loro
convinzioni più intime. Una ragione, che di fronte al divino è
sorda e respinge la religione nell’ambito delle sottoculture, è
incapace di inserirsi nel dialogo delle culture. E tuttavia, la
moderna ragione propria delle scienze naturali, con l’intrinseco suo
elemento platonico, porta in sé, come ho cercato di dimostrare, un
interrogativo che la trascende insieme con le sue possibilità
metodiche. Essa stessa deve semplicemente accettare la struttura
razionale della materia e la corrispondenza tra il nostro spirito e
le strutture razionali operanti nella natura come un dato di fatto,
sul quale si basa il suo percorso metodico. Ma la domanda sul perché
di questo dato di fatto esiste e deve essere affidata dalle scienze
naturali ad altri livelli e modi del pensare – alla filosofia e
alla teologia. Per la filosofia e, in modo diverso, per la teologia,
l’ascoltare le grandi esperienze e convinzioni delle tradizioni
religiose dell’umanità, specialmente quella della fede cristiana,
costituisce una fonte di conoscenza; rifiutarsi ad essa
significherebbe una riduzione inaccettabile del nostro ascoltare e
rispondere. Qui mi viene in mente una parola di Socrate a Fedone. Nei
colloqui precedenti si erano toccate molte opinioni filosofiche
sbagliate, e allora Socrate dice “Sarebbe ben comprensibile se
uno, a motivo dell’irritazione per tante cose sbagliate, per il resto
della sua vita prendesse in odio ogni discorso sull’essere e lo
denigrasse. Ma in questo modo perderebbe la verità dell’essere e
subirebbe un grande danno”. L’occidente, da molto tempo, è
minacciato da questa avversione contro gli interrogativi fondamentali
della sua ragione, e così può subire solo un grande danno. Il
coraggio di aprirsi all’ampiezza della ragione, non il rifiuto della
sua grandezza – è questo il programma con cui una teologia
impegnata nella riflessione sulla fede biblica, entra nella disputa
del tempo presente. “Non agire secondo ragione (con il logos) è
contrario alla natura di Dio”, ha detto Manuele II, partendo
dalla sua immagine cristiana di Dio, all’interlocutore persiano. È a
questo grande logos, a questa vastità della ragione, che invitiamo
nel dialogo delle culture i nostri interlocutori. Ritrovarla noi
stessi sempre di nuovo, è il grande compito dell’università.

L’improbabile dialogo di Benedetto
XVI con i 138 saggi musulmani

Rappresentanti vaticani e dotti
musulmani si incontreranno a Roma in marzo prossimo per mettere a
punto alcune piste per il dialogo fra cristiani e musulmani. Si
rischia il vuoto o la falsità se il dialogo non affronta non solo la
teologia, ma i problemi concreti delle due comunità.
Beirut (AsiaNews) – La lezione
magistrale del papa a Regensburg, tanto criticata da molto mondo
musulmano (e anche occidentale), sta portando frutti positivi proprio
nel dialogo con il mondo islamico. Proprio in seguito al discorso di
Regensburg (12 settembre 2006), 38 saggi islamici hanno mandato una
prima lettera a commento (13 ottobre 2006) e un anno dopo una seconda
lettera (sottoscritta da 138 saggi, diventati intanto 216) per
cercare un terreno comune di collaborazione fra cristiani e
musulmani.
A sua volta, il 19 novembre scorso,
Benedetto XVI ha risposto alla Lettera dei 138 aprendo a una
possibile collaborazione su diversi campi. Alcune settimane fa (il 12
dicembre 2007), una lettera al card. Bertone del principe giordano
Ghazi bin Muhammad bin Talal, accetta di aprire il campo alla
collaborazione fra febbraio e marzo, personalità della Curia
vaticana e del mondo islamico si incontreranno a Roma per stabilire
le procedure e i contenuti di tale dialogo. Ma è possibile che il
tutto si concluda con un buco nell’acqua. Mi sembra infatti che le
personalità musulmane in contatto con il papa, vogliano sfuggire
questioni fondamentali e concrete, come i diritti dell’uomo, la
reciprocità, la violenza ecc. per arroccarsi su un improbabile
dialogo teologico “sull’anima e Dio”.
Vediamo più da vicino i problemi
emersi.
Il pericolo più grosso della lettera
dei 138 è nei suoi silenzi, su ciò che essa non tratta non si
accenna, ad esempio, ai problemi della comunità internazionale verso
la comunità musulmana e ai problemi reali interni alla comunità
musulmana. La Umma si trova in un momento molto delicato, in una fase
di estremismo e di radicalismo diffusi in una parte significativa dei
musulmani, che è una forma di esclusivismo chi non la pensa come
noi è nostro nemico. Questo è evidente ogni giorno sulla stampa
musulmana, e vediamo violenze e attacchi in Iraq, Iran, Pakistan,
Afghanistan, fra i musulmani sunniti e sciiti, o contro cristiani o
ebrei, o semplicemente contro il musulmano che è tollerante … e ci
sono!
Il pericolo per l’Islam non è la
violenza questa è presente in tutto il mondo e in tutte le
religioni e le ideologie. Il pericolo è di giustificare tutto questo
attraverso la religione. Anche certe violenze contro le donne e i
loro diritti sono giustificati con il Corano. Ad esempio, un donna
musulmana non può divorziare, perché il divorzio è un diritto del
marito, lei può solo chiedere il favore d’essere ripudiata da lui.
Lui, in base al Corano si può anche risposare (fino a 4 mogli) e
rifarsi una vita, ma la donna, che vive separata, non ha questo
diritto. Lei, una giovane sposa, si lamentava con me perché “non
c’è giustizia”. Queste situazioni in cui uno si appoggia al
Corano o alla sharia per escludere l’altro, sono frequenti.
Il papa allora propone un’applicazione
concreta formare un gruppo di dialogo per cercare un terreno comune.
Tale terreno va trovato a diversi livelli
a) Il primo è trovare valori che
garantiscano “il rispetto reciproco, della solidarietà e della
pace”. “Rispetto” qui significa anche che vi sono differenze
che occorre garantire e accoglierle. Ad esempio, un musulmano può
dire a un cristiano io non sono d’accordo su quel che tu credi,
che cioè Gesù ha natura umana e divina. Voi cristiani siete
politeisti perché mettete affianco al Dio unico, i vostro Gesù
Cristo e lo Spirito Santo, cioè altri dèi. Io dico cerchiamo di
vivere il rispetto reciproco. Tu hai pieno diritto nel dire che la
concezione islamica esclude la Trinità, la divino-umanità. Ma
lasciami il diritto di poter dire ad esempio che Maometto non è un
inviato di Dio. Posso riconoscere che egli è una grande personalità
sul piano umano, politico, un riformatore sociale e spirituale, che
ha portato anche rilievi negativi, ma non è un profeta. Ho il
diritto di dirlo o no? Come tu hai diritto a dire che non credi nella
divinità di Cristo – e sei coerente nella tua fede –, noi anche
abbiamo diritto di dire quello che pensiamo su Maometto[[ Su questo
punto noi cristiani nel mondo arabo soffriamo tanto, perchè non ci è
lecito dire davvero quello che pensiamo. Spesso i musulmani ci
chiedono “uno scambio di favori” noi crediamo che Gesù è un
profeta, voi dovete credere che Maometto è un profeta.]]. Insomma,
non esistono degli argomenti “tabù”, ma esistono solo dei modi e
dei metodi tabù, perché violenti e irrispettosi.
b) L’altro livello è quello
della vita umana come “sacra”. Questa dimensione etica abbraccia
un campo molto largo, che va dal rigetto dell’aborto fino alla fine
naturale della vita umana. Ma è inserita anche la non violenza, che
è una delle forme più nobili del rispetto della vita umana. E
significa anche un amore a tutte le opere della cultura e del
progresso umano per l’uguaglianza fra gli uomini, per i diritti
umani un rispetto alla vita e a ciò che la fa esprimere e fiorire.
Nel discorso alla Curia romana del 22 dicembre 2006, il papa diceva:
“è necessario accogliere le vere conquiste dell’illuminismo, i
diritti dell’uomo e specialmente la libertà della fede e del suo
esercizio, riconoscendo in essi elementi essenziali anche per
l’autenticità della religione”. Per Benedetto XVI, “il contenuto
del dialogo tra cristiani e musulmani sarà in questo momento
soprattutto quello di incontrarsi in questo impegno per trovare le
soluzioni giuste”. Insieme ai musulmani, impegnarsi “contro la
violenza e per la sinergia tra fede e ragione, tra religione e
libertà”. Il fondamento è “la dignità di ogni persona umana”,
espressa dai diritti umani.
A questo punto il papa suggerisce ai
138 quattro temi da affrontare
1) diritti umani. Questo è il
primo punto per fondare il dialogo;
2) conoscenza obbiettiva della
religione dell’altro. Ossia conoscere l’altro per come l’altro
si definisce. Il cristiano deve conoscere l’Islam per come il
Corano e i musulmani odierni lo definiscono; il musulmano deve
conoscere il cristianesimo attraverso i Vangeli e l’insegnamento
della Chiesa[[ in questa conoscenza obbiettiva reciproca, il pericolo
maggiore lo corrono i musulmani. Essendo l’islam venuto dopo del
cristianesimo, e essendoci nel Corano riferimenti a Gesù, a Maria, e
ai cristiani, molto spesso i musulmani non fanno la fatica di
conoscere il cristianesimo per come i cristiani si comprendono, ma si
accontentano di quello che dice il Corano. I cristiani, invece, per
scoprire l’Islam hanno solo la possibilità di conoscerlo leggendo
il Corano.]] . Una conoscenza obbiettiva è fondamentale per un reale
rapporto.
3) Condivisione dell’esperienza
religiosa. Questo elemento non è stato messo in evidenza finora.
L’esperienza religiosa è più della conoscenza. Riconosce che
anche se il dogma dell’altro, non è quello mio, egli può
arricchirmi dal punto di vista umano e spirituale. Alcuni giorni fa,
in volo da Beirut a Parigi, ho potuto passare 3 ore a colloquiare con
un giovane africano proveniente dalla Mecca, dove aveva compiuto il
pellegrinaggio. È stato bellissimo e profondo. E questo ci è
servito ad apprezzare, ma anche rettificare l’immagine che abbiamo
l’uno dell’altro[[ Questo significa che possiamo condividere la
religiosità senza rinunciare ai nostri principi. Si può anche
pensare di pregare insieme. Tante volte in passato si è fatta la
critica a Ratzinger che era negativo sugli incontri di Assisi, dove
dal 1986, personalità religiose si sono incontrati a pregare. La
polemica che è scaturita tante volte era se persone di diverse
religioni potevano pregare insieme. La posizione dell’allora card.
Ratzinger era che bisognava evitare tutto ciò che poteva suggerire
confusione o sincretismo. Ma pregare insieme, come l’ha fatto il
papa a Istanbul nella moschea, è il massimo del rispetto e del
dialogo.]].
4) Impegnarsi per educare i
giovani. Se non prepariamo i giovani a vivere già oggi questo
rispetto reciproco, domani ci potremmo trovare ancora in un conflitto
fra noi.
Fin qui la lettera del Papa breve, ma
molto densa, segno della sua profonda riflessione.
III. La risposta al papa di Ghazi Ibn
Talal solo dialogo teologico
La risposta dei 138, a firma di Ghazi
Ibn Talal, principe di Giordania, data dal 12 dicembre 2007. Dopo
alcuni preamboli, la lettera dice che essi accettano l’idea del
dialogo e che in marzo invieranno alcuni rappresentanti per precisare
i dettagli dell’organizzazione e delle procedure.
Ma poi (al n. 4 del testo) propongono
una distinzione tra intrinseco e estrinseco, e spiegano «Per
“intrinseco” intendiamo ciò che si riferisce alle nostre anime e
alle loro caratteristiche interiori, e per “estrinseco”
intendiamo ciò che è riferito al mondo e quindi alla società».
Essi propongono di partire dalla Lettera da loro scritta, “Una
parola comune tra noi e voi”, e di concentrarsi «essenzialmente
un’affermazione del Dio Unico, e del duplice comandamento di amare
Lui ed il prossimo». Tutto il resto appartiene all’estrinseco, di
cui fa parte anche l’impegno nella società.
Onestamente, trovo che questa
distinzione sia debole e perfino non islamica. Perché se
“intrinseco” è l’anima ed “estrinseco” è il mondo e la
società, allora significa che il Corano parla tantissimo delle cose
“estrinseche” e pochissimo delle cose “intrinseche”. Il
Corano parla del mondo, del commercio, della vita in società, della
guerra, del matrimonio, ecc, ma parla pochissimo dell’anima e del
rapporto con Dio. Ma soprattutto il Corano non fa mai questa
distinzione. Anzi, il problema dell’Islam è proprio quello di non
fare alcuna differenza fra questi due livelli. Come mai i 138
vogliono affrontare solo le cose “intrinseche”? Temo che abbiano
paura di affrontare tutta la realtà delle due religioni.
