Christians Butchered In Guinea But There Is Something You Can Do About It

Great havoc and violence has arisen in Guinea in which a substantial amount of churches have been destroyed and a immense amount of Christians have been killed. Jihadist provoked violence left ninety-five people dead and a hundred and thirty wounded.
In Nzérékoré five churches have been attacked and looted and the homes of four pastors attacked by Muslim mobs. One priest Fr. Joseph recounted the violence:
The two Catholic and Protestant churches have all been ransacked and burned Almost all the houses and shops belonging to Christians or people affiliated with Christians have not escaped the fury of attackers.
Within the Catholic area including the quarters of the nuns and the Presbyter were looted and set to flames. Moreover in Beyla The Center for Youth Development a conference room an internet cafe a primary school and a library were ravaged and devastated.
Beyla’s regional deputy of health services Dr. Tolon Loua was killed during the violence as Fr. Joseph says:

He was inside of his house when the assailants arrived and set it on fire Badly burned he was transported to the hospital where he was later declared dead.
In Moribadou violence lasted for three days in which about 10 churches were destroyed.

In many parts of the country the small minority of Christians live at peace with the Hindu majority. But in some states they are acutely vulnerable to a militant Hindu nationalist movement called Hindutva which is striving to make India a religiously “pure” nation. Recent years have seen numerous incidents of small-scale aggression such as those listed above and also major outbreaks of anti-Christian communal violence in Orissa and Karnataka.
It is difficult for Christians to obtain justice for offences committed against them. Local police can be slow to respond to attacks and often no-one is prosecuted. Corruption is also rife in the courts and Christians’ unwillingness to play the system dishonestly works against them. Five years on from the Orissa violence few people have been convicted. Christian leaders and human rights activists continue to campaign for justice however and in December 2012 twelve people were handed prison sentences for their part in the 2008 attacks.

Vruir Avanessian was taken to a specialized clinic for his routine dialysis dressed in prison uniform and accompanied by several guards. He was then transferred back to the Evin detention center.
Rev. Vruir Avanessian an Armenian Iranian pastor was taken to a local hospital from his cell at Evin detention center to receive much needed kidney dialysis treatment and then was transferred back to the prison.
The 60 year old pastor was taken to Shahid Hashemi-Nejad hospital’s dialysis wing located in the Vanak area of Tehran accompanied by several prison guards. The local weather was extremely cold and he was escorted wearing only a thin prison uniform without any proper outer clothing. He was subsequently returned to the prison after the completion of the much needed medical procedure.
He was allowed a brief visit with his wife Rima Avanessian at the hospital.
Eye-witnesses reported that the Christian pastor who has served the Christian community for more than 17 years and is in critical health was taken to the hospital to receive treatment wearing a uniform that is used only for convicted/formally charged criminals.
This occurred while the presiding chairman of the Social Committee of the Islamic Republic of Iran’s parliament declared in a recent report that Iranian prisons are like hotels and contrary to other countries the Islamic Republic treats even the convicted criminals with dignity and respect!
Rev. Avanessian was being treated as a convict although he has not been charged with any crimes and has not even been informed of the reasons for his arrest. Also he was transported to the hospital in a prison uniform that reserved for convicted criminals.
Sources indicate that the health of this 60 year old pastor is fragile and the ongoing detention given the current condition of detention centers and prisons in Iran could pose a grave danger to the frail Christian leader.
Rev. Avanessian is currently suffering from heart disease and several operations that resulted in his premature retirement from ministry. Also due to his diabetes and kidney dysfunction he requires regular dialysis on Tuesdays Thursdays and Saturdays each week at the dialysis clinic of Hashemi-Nejad Hospital.
It must be remembered that Rev. Vruir Avanessian along with 50 other newly converted Christians who had gathered at a residence in the Northern suburbs of Tehran to celebrate and worship God on the arrival of the festive season of Christmas were interrupted by security officers and detained for several hours. He unlike others was taken to an unknown location for further interrogation and detention.
After the arrest of this Christian musician and his transfer to an unknown location on Friday December 28 Pastor Avanessian was given permission to contact his family by phone for one minute to inform them of his health and well-being. He was apparently unable to give much explanation about the state of his health or his location.
On Saturday December 29 one of the prison staff contacted home of Pastor Avanessian and asked his wife to bring his medication to the prison. While delivering the necessary medications to the prison authorities Mrs. Rima Avanessian warned them that prison and security authorities would be responsible for any mishaps that could endanger the health and life of her husband.

Libya on Thursday released four Egyptian Christians who spent more than a month in jail after being accused of proselytizing Egypt’s state news agency MENA said.
Quoting church sources MENA said Libyan authorities had dropped the charges against them. A fifth detained Egyptian died in a Tripoli prison last month it added.
The release comes after Egypt extradited two members of the regime of ousted Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi earlier this month. An Egyptian court barred the extradition of a cousin of Gaddafi claiming to hold Egyptian citizenship.
Last month Egyptian judicial sources told Reuters Egypt was seeking to swap the Libyans with the Egyptian Copts.
On Wednesday Libya decided to grant Egypt struggling with economic and political turmoil a $2 billion five-year interest-free loan.
Libya’s small Christian community has expressed fears over Islamist extremism as the government struggles to impose its authority over armed groups which have refused to lay down their weapons since the 2011 war that ousted Gaddafi.
In December an explosion at a building belonging to a Coptic church in Dafniya close to the western Libyan city of Misrata killed two Egyptian men and wounded two others.

Mideast Christians Face Widening Persecution
January 16 2012/0 Comments/in Christian Persecution /by Keith Davies. UNITED NATIONS ― Though it’s the birthplace of Christianity in ancient times the modern Middle East is increasingly hostile to Christianity as civil conflict Islamic fundamentalism and terrorism grow in scope and strength.
A few months ago during the U.N.’s annual debate the Vatican’s Secretary of State Archbishop Dominique Mamberti told assembled delegates that Christians currently suffer more persecution because of their faith and any other religious group. He warned that this “denial of religious freedom threatened peace and security and precluded human development.”
Archbishop Mamberti stressed “Respect for religious freedom is the fundamental path for the construction of peace the recognition of human dignity and the safeguarding of human rights.”
Though the forum of the United Nations regularly echoes calls for global rights freedoms and religious tolerance rarely are any states singled out as persecutors of Christianity ― especially in the Middle East.
Iraq offers a bittersweet example. The country’s Christian community dates to the 2nd century A.D. with communities in the Chaldean and Assyrian churches comprising about 15 percent of the prewar population a presence numbered approximately 500,000.
Though Saddam’s regime did not persecute Christians for their religion per se many believers nonetheless fled due to political intolerance. Following the 2003 Anglo/American invasion toppling Saddam the genie of sectarian strife was out of the bottle.
“Iraq’s Christian community has dwindled since the U.S.-led invasion. Though no reliable statistics exist most experts believe that less than 300,000 Christians remain in Iraq. Hundreds of thousands have sought refuge in Jordan and Syria,” the Catholic Near East Welfare Association (CNEWA) said. Sixty-six percent belong to the Chaldean Catholic church. Interestingly one out of five Iraqis was a Christian in 1932; today the number has dwindled to 1 in 33.
Christians are targeted by Islamic factions and as recently as 2010 some 52 people were killed during the siege of a Catholic church in Baghdad. Estimates say as much as half or more of Iraqi Christians have left the country or are internally displaced.
According to the New York-based Catholic Near East many displaced Iraqi Christians have found religious refuge in the Kurdish-controlled north of the country. The Kurds remain committed to protecting religious minorities and thus Christians have found safe haven.
But the winds of the Arab Spring have not been kind to Christians in Egypt where the country’s large Coptic community has come under assault. Though approximately 10 percent of the population largely protected during the secular government of deposed President Hosni Mubarak the communities have come under assault over the past year. Domestic political chaos growing Islamic fundamentalism and simmering discrimination has targeted this vulnerable community.
Equally in Syria a 5-percent strong Christian community remains divided between Greek Orthodox and Catholics. Despite the secular Assad family dictatorship the minority has not been specifically targeted but many Christians have emigrated. Still Syria has hosted fleeing Iraqi Christians who number 150,000 according to CNEWA.
On the positive side tiny Lebanon hosts a Christian community numbering over a million and comprising over a third of the population. Partly reflecting the legacy of French rule a strong Maronite church among others shares political power with Muslim factions to this day. Sadly the Lebanese civil war in the 1970s was rooted in sectarian strife. Today’s Lebanon again regaining prosperity remains a place of tolerance.
So too does the Kingdom of Jordan where the Christian population has dropped from 5 percent to the current 3 percent. Significantly in the Royal Parliament nine of the 110 seats are specifically reserved for Christians and relations are generally positive. Israel allows its small Arab Christian community to practice their religion freely.
Sadly in the lands of the ancient Christian denominations highly politicized Islam remains a challenge to the churches. Given the fragile or fragmented role of secular Arab states Christian minorities are among the first to be demonized and often targeted. The world watches and does little about this blatant religious intolerance.

Shanghai. Several Christians received labor camp sentences.

An influential house church Christian in Shanghai who has been targeted for repeated government harassment was given an extra-judicial sentence to a labor camp just days before the 18th Communist Party Congress opened just one example of the ruling Communist Party’s harsh measures to maintain order in advance of this major conclave where the reins of power will be handed over.
Labor camp sentences were also meted out for several other people who had joined Mao Hengfeng in seeking redress by petitioning the government and a large number of petitioners have disappeared into official custody have been criminally detained or have had their freedom of movement curtailed in the run-up to the Nov. 8 opening of the 18th Party Congress.
Mao was sentenced on Oct. 30 to 18 months of “re-education through labor” for “disrupting public order.” (see scans below) This is the third labor camp sentence for Mao who will be 51 next month and is in poor health with dangerously high blood pressure.
Her case is but one example of the clampdown on personal freedoms especially for petitioners in advance of the Party Congress. Famed Shanghai activist Feng Zhenghu has been illegally confined to his home for eight months already.
Mao is an influential presence among the tens of thousands of Shanghai petitioners. Not only has she long been trying to use the law to seek redress from various government departments for her own case and to protect her legal rights she’s also worked on behalf of other petitioners. That Shanghai’s petitioners are more united more knowledgeable about the law and government policy and more rational in using the law to protect their rights than petitioners elsewhere is largely due to the efforts of Mao Shen Peilan Jin Yuehua and other leading figures. It is precisely for this reason that Mao has been the focus of attention of the municipal district and grassroots governments and why they have been ceaselessly targeting her for attacks.
As early as July 2003 Mao was put under judicial detention for 15 days for “disrupting court order.” In April 2004 she was sentenced to 18 months of “re-education through labor” for “disrupting public order.” In January 2007 she was sentenced to a two-year jail term for “deliberately damaging property.” In January 2009 she was placed under administrative detention for seven days for “disturbing order in a public place.” In March 2010 she was sentenced to a second 18-month term of re-education through labor for “disrupting public order” but was released early due to stage 3 hypertension.
Her most recent sentence stems from a Jan. 5 gathering during which she and others marked the anniversary of the deaths of the mother of one of the petitioners and a similar gathering on July 1 to mark the anniversary of the 2007 death of Chen Xiaoming a human rights lawyer who was a leading housing rights activist after he lost his own home.
ChinaAid has learned that several other petitioners who have also received labor camp sentences. Christian women Shen Peilan and Jin Yuehua were detained by police in recent days and a large number of petitioners have been forcibly detained on Chongming Island to attend “vacation classes.”
ChinaAid founder and president Bob Fu expressed grave concern for the plight of the “disappeared” and detained petitioners and for others who have suffered human rights abuses perpetrated by the Chinese government as it sought to “maintain stability” in preparation for the 18th Party Congress. He noted that these measures run counter to the concept of a “harmonious society” that outgoing leaders Hu Jintao and Wen Jiabao have long been advocating. Fu called on the international community to pay close attention to the developments in these cases and on the Chinese government to grasp the opportunity presented by the 18th Party Congress to bring about real reforms that will protect human rights the rule of law and basic rights such as freedom of religion.

A Minsk è stato ritardato l’inizio della riunione del Gruppo di contatto sull’Ucraina. Lo ha annunciato il Ministero degli Esteri della Bielorussia.

Gli Scozzesi hanno votato contro la secessione dal Regno Unito. Non c’è alcun motivo per fare un nuovo referendum sull’indipendenza della regione e la questione è stata risolta per un’intera generazione.

ROMA 20 SET – E’ stato raggiunto a Minsk in Bielorussia un accordo di cessate il fuoco e per la creazione di una zona demilitarizzata di 30 km nella parte orientale dell’Ucraina. L’annuncio è avvenuto dopo sette ore di colloqui del cosiddetto ‘gruppo di contatto’ formato da Osce Mosca Kiev e separatisti filorussi. Il Gruppo di contatto per risolvere la crisi in Ucraina in occasione della prossima serie di colloqui a Minsk potrà fare un passo significativo. Lo ha dichiarato venerdì l’ambasciatore russo in Ucraina Mikhail Zurabov in qualità di rappresentante di Mosca dei negoziati. Tuttavia ha aggiunto che potranno essere prese “alcune decisioni importanti che renderanno più reali gli accordi precedenti”. Il precedente incontro si è svolto a Minsk il 5 settembre. L’esito principale della riunione è stata la firma del protocollo i cui punti principali erano il cessate il fuoco e lo scambio di prigionieri.

L’armonizzazione delle norme di equipaggiamento dei sistemi di navigazione russi e cinesi non sono un progetto politico. Ma essa eliminerà la pressione dall’esterno sugli utenti che hanno accesso al GLONASS e al Beidou.
Lo ha detto all’agenzia “Rossiya Segodnya” il vice presidente di GLONASS Società senza scopo di lucro Evgeny Belyanko in occasione dell’avvio dei colloqui tra Russia e Cina. La direzione più importante in cui si prevede una vasta cooperazione tra la Russia e la Cina è nella creazione di un unico spazio di sicurezza sulle strade dal Pacifico all’Atlantico ha detto. Nonostante i dubbi degli esperti nei prossimi anni i due Paesi formeranno un unico spazio informativo di navigazione:L’Europa e la Russia hanno un sistema di navigazione e informativo per la sicurezza nel sistema di trasporto che è armonizzato tra loro. In Russia esso è denominato ERA-GLONASS in Europa è il sistema eCall. Il Kazakistan crea il proprio sistema. Se sarà istituito il sistema cinese tecnologicamente compatibile con tre di questi sistemi allora possiamo parlare di un unico spazio di sicurezza sulle strade dall’Europa alla Cina. Che rimarca difatti la Via della Seta. Questo creerà un sistema di servizi transfrontalieri e fornirà servizi di sicurezza servizi di informazione servizi aggiuntivi ai valichi di frontiera. L’abbonato potrà usare un tale servizio indipendentemente dalla sua ubicazione nel territorio di un Paese.
La cooperazione tra Beidou e GLONASS sarà reciprocamente vantaggiosa. Ad esempio in cambio delle stazioni terrestri di controllo a tre in Cina che specificheranno il sistema GLONASS la Russia installerà un numero simile di stazioni Beidou. Ciò permetterà di migliorare la capacità del sistema ha detto Evgeny Belyanko:
Il risultato complessivo di questa collaborazione sarà certamente il miglioramento della precisione di navigazione per la Cina nei settori che si ritiene essere di massima priorità. E miglioramenti ci saranno anche per GLONASS perché è un sistema globale che copre l’intero globo e questo aumenterà la precisione su tutto il pianeta. Da un punto di vista tecnico GLONASS e Beidou si completano a vicenda per la ragione che GLONASS è focalizzato in gran parte nella copertura delle regioni polari. Beidou ha anche un po’ di copertura di parte del sud. Se si utilizza la navigazione sulla costellazione congiunta si ottiene una navigazione perfetta sull’intero globo.
Russia e Cina si avviano ad interagire non solo per l’armonizzazione delle norme delle attrezzature dei loro sistemi di navigazione satellitare. Saranno condotti progetti nel settore della microelettronica. Qui il compito principale non è solo la creazione di un chipset unico che soprattutto fornisca all’abbonato l’accesso garantito al segnale di navigazione GLONASS e Beidou ha sottolineato Evgeny Belyanko:
Il risultato più importante della cooperazione tra la Russia e la Cina è che non sarà esercitata alcuna pressione. I consumatori sia in Russia che in Cina grazie alla compatibilità tecnologica dei sistemi avranno la garanzia della ricezione e dell’accesso ai segnali GLONASS e Beidou. In questo senso l’affidabilità aumenta. La decisione di cooperare non è politica. Questa è una necessità del tutto obiettiva in termini di esigenze di business di sviluppo dei sistemi di navigazione nazionali.
Sullo sfondo della crisi l’Ucraina gli Stati Uniti hanno rifiutato l’hosting del GLONASS russo e modificato la cooperazione tecnologica. Questo ha influenzato anche la portata della navigazione satellitare. Tuttavia le sanzioni degli Stati Uniti hanno spinto la Russia ad una partnership con la Cina in questo campo. La Cina ha anche espresso interesse per la cooperazione infatti nel prossimo anno sta per spingere i confini della attuale sistema Beidou da regionale a globale.

L’UE nasconde la testa sotto la sabbia. All’ombra del referendum sull’autodeterminazione della Scozia un’altra emergenza si evidenzia sulla sorte dell’Unione europea. I leader dell’UE hanno preso la decisione finale di rinviare a tempo indeterminato il vertice economico che avrebbe dovuto essere la chiave dell’attuale semestre di presidenza italiana. La versione ufficiale è che l’agenda è sovraccarica. Tuttavia nelle hall di Bruxelles si vocifera che l’assenza dei leader europei dipende dalla impossibilità di capire cosa fare con l’economia europea.
L’idea era di organizzare nel mese di ottobre un vertice di emergenza per gli affari economici dell’Unione europea presentata dal presidente francese Francois Hollande e dal primo ministro italiano Matteo Renzi. Hanno offerto ai colleghi di discutere le prospettive per l’area euro deteriorata e in particolare il problema della disoccupazione. I recenti dati dell’agenzia Eurostat mostrano che nonostante gli sforzi non è possibile invertire la situazione socio – economica dell’UE. Il numero dei disoccupati nell’Unione Europea nel mese di giugno è di 25 milioni di persone pari ad un tasso di disoccupazione del 10,2%. Rispetto a maggio la situazione è migliorata dello 0,1%. Un simile “progresso” è stato registrato anche nella zona euro che passa dall’11,6% al 11,5%. Allo stesso tempo Eurostat non rivela alcuna fretta nel pubblicare i dati più recenti.
In realtà rimane fermo lo sviluppo economico della zona euro. L’Organizzazione per la Cooperazione e lo Sviluppo Economico (OCSE) nel suo ultimo rapporto ha definito la situazione economica nella zona euro un peso per l’economia globale pesando ancor più che i conflitti in Ucraina e in Medio Oriente o l’incertezza riguardo la Scozia. Il rapporto prevede che il PIL della zona euro crescerà nel 2014 dello 0,8% mentre a maggio era prevista una crescita dell’1,2%. Per raffronto negli Stati Uniti si attende una crescita del 2 – 2,2% del PIL. La continua crescita lenta nell’area dell’euro è il fattore più preoccupante nelle previsioni cita esperti dell’OCSE l’agenzia AFP. In questo caso obiettivi rischi finanziari ed economici per l’Unione europea rimangono ha ricordato a “Rossiya Segodnya” l’esperto dell’Istituto per l’Europa Vladislav Belov I mercati mondiali sono ancora incerti. Di conseguenza si ha una riduzione della domanda esterna. Si deve ricordare che l’economia europea ha particolari risorse interne per un cambiamento qualitativo della situazione. La decisione presa dai leader europei a fine agosto nel tenere nel mese di ottobre uno speciale vertice economico sembrava logica. Tuttavia in base alle informazioni disponibili il forum è stato annullato a causa della dura presa di posizione della cancelliera Angela Merkel. È contraria a Francia e Italia che hanno proposto misure per promuovere la crescita economica e creare nuovi posti di lavoro violando i principi degli equilibri di bilancio. E Bruxelles non può permettersi di tenere un vertice che testimoni le divisioni politiche. Nel frattempo l’Unione Europea come misura chiave anti crisi continua a pompare denaro nel sistema bancario. La Banca centrale europea (BCE) ha fornito alle banche 82 miliardi e 600 milioni di euro per l’attuazione delle operazioni di rifinanziamento a lungo termine (TLTRO). Secondo il Wall Street Journal la BCE quest’anno intende assegnare alle banche per l’attuazione di tali operazioni 400 miliardi di euro. Ma tali politiche soddisfano poco gli obiettivi della lotta alla disoccupazione ha detto il capo del dipartimento operazioni attive della banca russa Finansovy Standard Roman Andreev Gli sforzi compiuti dalla dirigenza dell’Unione europea non trovano risposta reale nella sfera sociale. L’errore delle autorità dell’UE è che esse finanziano principalmente le banche nella speranza che le banche concedano prestiti alle piccole e medie imprese. E queste a loro volta espandano le proprie attività ed assumano lavoratori. Ma nelle condizioni complesse e contraddittorie di oggi le società finanziarie si stanno muovendo verso la riduzione dei costi compresa la riduzione del personale. C’è un’altra ragione per la riluttanza della leadership dell’UE nel sollevare le questioni finanziarie ed economiche. Prima o poi sarà inevitabile un dibattito sulla questione della guerra delle sanzioni con la Russia. L’importo esatto delle perdite dell’UE a causa della politica anti Russia imposta da Washington deve ancora essere valutato. Gli esperti dell’organizzazione internazionale International Trade Center stanno già parlando di circa 10 miliardi di euro. E un certo numero di Stati membri dell’UE Repubblica Ceca Slovacchia Ungheria Grecia Cipro hanno inevitabilmente rimesso al vertice la questione suicida delle politiche anti Russia dell’UE. E così la leadership dell’Unione Europea si è presa una pausa sulle questioni pericolose. Il portavoce del governo francese Stephane Le Foll ha spiegato cosa sta succedendo sulla “questione tempo” La presidenza italiana dell’UE ha voluto rinviare il calendario del vertice a causa degli argomenti posti all’ordine del giorno. Non c’è altra ragione ha detto diplomaticamente. Ma è proprio questo il caso in cui i politici non dovrebbero credere a una parola. E soprattutto la politica dello struzzo dell’UE nell’affrontare i problemi della zona euro non va via.

Christian children fleeing from gunmen saved their lives by hiding among the rock formations towering over the eastern side of this northern village but a 6-month-old baby and a 13-year-old girl never got the chance.
The infant Alexander Blessed and the girl Happiness Adamu were the youngest of five people from five churches who were slain. Christians were still gathered in and about a home where a funeral for the village chief had taken place in the predominantly Muslim state of Kaduna when under cover of darkness on a Saturday night (Feb. 23) marauding black-clad gunmen arrived from the west and began firing.
Eleven Christians were hospitalized with wounds including Martha Blessed who was shot as she tried to protect her infant son. Bullets broke both legs of another 13-year-old Christian girl Gloria Livinus of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Aduwan.
The raid came as a shock as area Christians had been living without enmity toward anyone said John Audi 45-year-old grandson of the village chief and a member of St. Patrick’s church.
“We were all scattered and some that were shot were crying,” he told Morning Star News. “We all ran for cover where we believed we could avoid being hit by the bullets.”
Witnesses reportedly said the gunmen spoke in Fulani dialect but church leaders said the area had been free of the land and property conflicts that have marked relations between Muslim ethnic Fulanis and predominantly Christian tribes. Islamic extremist groups have increasingly incited Fulani Muslims to attack Christian areas and witnesses reportedly said the assailants carried sophisticated weapons.
Area church leaders questioned how the shooting could have gone on for three hours without response from authorities in a north-central state that has been blanketed with military security forces to counteract terrorist violence.
“This village was attacked for three hours yet no help came to our people here,” said the Rt. Rev. Danlami Bello bishop of the First African Church Kafanchan Diocese whose headquarters are in Aduwan. “These attacks have gone unhindered without security agencies coming to the scenes of the attacks to assist Christian victims.”
As did others he suspected a strong religious element to the attack.
“There is no doubt that this attack like many others on Christian communities in northern Nigeria had religious bearings,” he said. “There is this desire by Muslim leaders in Nigeria to Islamize the country by force; hence the attacks are aimed at forcing Christians into submitting to Islam.”
The Rev. Casmir Yabo vicar of the First African Church Mission in Aduwan told Morning Star News that church members who hid in farmlands west of the village reported seeing about 10 assailants leaving after the attack.
“We believe that the attackers are Muslim Fulani gunmen who invaded and attacked this village. I wept as I saw corpses of the five killed for no justifiable reason,” said Yabo. “The impact of the attack is that at the moment our members are scared of coming to churches for worship services.”
The attack came two days after a similar slaughter of 10 people in village near Jos in Plateau state.
Besides hit-and-run attacks by Fulani Muslims Christians in Nigeria have also been targeted by the Islamic extremist Boko Haram group in its effort to destabilize the government and impose sharia (Islamic law) nationwide. Christians make up 51.3 percent of Nigeria’s population of 158.2 million and live mainly in the south while Muslims account for 45 percent and reside primarily in the north. Nigerians practicing indigenous religions may be as high as 10 percent of the total population according to Operation World so the percentages of Christians and Muslims may be less.
Attempted Bombing
Raymond Markus 31-year-old uncle to Happiness Adamu told Morning Star News that the villagers had no reason to expect the onslaught.
“We were all gathered here while prayers were being said when suddenly we were attacked,” he said. “We all ran in different directions. We are still in shock about this attack.”
He said that his slain niece was a faithful servant of Christ.
“It is a painful thing to lose such a brilliant teenager,” Markus said. “She was an obedient child and was committed in church activities; a very hard working church member.”
Markus took a Morning Star News correspondent to the auditorium of the Evangelical Church Winning All (ECWA) in the village where the gunmen unsuccessfully tried to set off a bomb blast. A chemical substance used to make the bomb remained on the walls of the church building; it left cracks that could collapse the structure at any moment.
Alice Saul 45-year-old member of the Cherubim and Seraphim Church in Rebok village lost her 22-year-old son Felix Saul in the attack. She said he was a final-year student at a public high school in Wadon village and a member of the church choir.
Also killed were Theresa Bulus 35 a member of the Baptist Church in the town of Kagaro and Yacham Ayuba 20 a member of the First African Church Mission in Madobiya village.
Christians injured in the attack included Joshua Kazah Kazah Bitrus Shagari Bako Ahuwan Thomas Cecilia Elisha Denise Maliki and Stephen Alpha sources said.
“At the end of the attack which lasted about three hours five Christians from different churches who had congregated here for prayers for the deceased had died while 11 others sustained injuries,” said Audi.
Bishop Bello called for sustained prayer for Christians in northern Nigeria and he urged Christians worldwide to call on their governments to assist the Nigerian government to defend against such attacks.
Vicar Yabo said the rock formations protecting the village’s eastern flank saved many lives.
“One miraculous thing is that the rocky hills on the eastern part of this village became a place of refuge for those who escaped from the attack,” he said. “Even children who had never climbed these hills before suddenly were able to escape by climbing the hills at night.”

A Christian boy named Mard-e-Khuda resident of Tehsil Haroonabad District Bahawalpur aged 19 years was barbarically assassinated on 9th January 2013. He was falsely accused of having an affair with a Muslim girl.
The local young Muslims had threatened him and they also used to proclaim openly that they will kill Mard-e-Khuda. On 9th January 2013 three Muslim men named Muhammad Shafique Illyas (Eidoo) and Sufiyan broke into his house and brutally assassinated him at 5.30 a.m. Illyas and Sufiyan gripped his hands and legs tightly and Mohammad Shafique hit his head with an axe. Afterwards Illyas and Sufiyan also stabbed him with a dagger. In the meanwhile Mard-e-Khuda’s father woke up and as he started shouting and crying the culprits ran from the spot.
On the same day an FIR bearing no.7/13 under section 302/34 was registered against them in Faqeerwali Police Station Bahawalpur. Unfortunately the Police is cooperating with the culprits and they have not yet arrested Mohammad Shafique Illyas and Sufiyan. All three of them are living in the same vicinity and the police is not taking any action against them even the S.H.O stated that such Christian who was having an affair with a Muslim girl was rightly killed by the Muslims.
In Pakistan hundreds of Christian girls are raped and forcefully converted by the Muslims but if any Christian man does such thing he is sentenced to death and even the Muslim girl is also apostated. Religious minority is facing this discriminatory law every day while living in Pakistan.
WVIP is filing a petition on Monday 25th February 2013. One month has been passed but the police is still not arresting the culprits. Even Illyas has admitted openly that he had killed Mard-e-Khuda but the police is reluctant to arrest all three of them.

More Than 100 Christian Sites Attacked In Egypt In Mid-August

Churches were burning in Pakistan while African Christians died and radical forms of Islam threatened monasteries sanctuaries and villages in Egypt Syria and Iraq.
That was 1997. Human-rights scholar Paul Marshall kept hearing one question over and over when he addressed this rising tide of persecution Why didn’t more American Christians protest as their sisters and brothers in the faith were jailed raped tortured and killed?
Some Christians he said were distracted by apocalyptic talk in which persecution was a good thing a sign that the end of the world was near. Others weren’t that interested in violence on the other side of the world that threatened believers in ancient churches that looked nothing like their own suburban megachurches.
“The result is a stunning passivity that calmly accepts such suffering,” said Marshall in an interview for an earlier column for the Scripps Howard News Service. “Perhaps this could be justified if we were dealing with our own suffering. But to do this with the suffering of another amounts to theological sadism.”
That was 1997. Marshall had just co-written the groundbreaking book “Their Blood Cries Out,” with journalist Lela Gilbert. Since then I have worked with both of these writers in global projects about religion-news coverage.
Now it’s 2013 and the news about the persecution of Christians has only gotten worse. Marshall Gilbert and Catholic lawyer Nina Shea recently completed a new volume entitled “Persecuted The Global Assault on Christians.”
The bottom line This topic is more relevant than ever.
A year ago German Chancellor Angela Merkel said “Christianity is the most persecuted religion in the world.” While some mocked her words a Pew Research Center study in 2011 found that Christians were harassed to one degree of violence or another in 130 countries — more than any other world religion. British historian Tom Holland told a recent London gathering that the world is witnessing the “effective extinction of Christianity from its birthplace” in the Middle East.
Recent losses endured in Egypt have been staggering with more than 100 Christian sites attacked by well-organized mobs in mid-August including the destruction of 42 churches — the worst assault on the Coptic Orthodox Church in 700 years. In Syria rebels linked to al-Qaeda overran Maaloula — famous for being one of three remaining villages in which locals speak ancient Aramaic the language of Jesus — damaging the priceless St. Thekla monastery and trashing two churches.
Then the headlines got worse with Islamist gunmen killing 67 or more people in the Westgate mall in Nairobi Kenya. While Muslims were freed hostages who would not recite the Shahada — an Islamic confession of faith — were tortured and killed before their bodies were mutilated. Days later the Taliban claimed credit for an attack by two suicide bombers on the historic All Saints Church in Peshawar Pakistan in which at least 85 worshipers died.
Pope Francis addressed these issues during remarks on Sept. 25 noted John L. Allen Jr. of the National Catholic Reporter when reached by email. He is the author of a new book entitled “The Global War on Christians Dispatches from the Front Lines of Anti-Christian Persecution.”
In Allen’s translation of the event the pope asked the crowd “When I think or hear it said that many Christians are persecuted and give their lives for their faith does this touch my heart or does it not reach me? Am I open to that brother or that sister in my family who’s giving his or her life for Jesus Christ? How many of you pray for Christians who are persecuted? How many? …
“It’s important to look beyond one’s own fence to feel oneself part of the Church of one family of God!”
While the truth is painful said Marshall it’s important to asking questions about all those silent believers and their silent churches. If anything it appears that many American Christians are even less interested in global persecution trends than they were in the past while their churches are even more independent and focused on a therapeutic individualistic approach to faith.
“It’s like all of these horrible events are just blips on the screen. They are there then they are gone and forgotten,” said Marshall. “Sometimes it’s easy to think that Christians in America don’t even know what is happening to their brothers and sisters around the world.”
