Mentre scriviamo, con i combattimenti in corso ormai da 23 giorni, il numero totale dei missili balistici iraniani lanciati contro Israele dall’inizio della guerra nell’ottobre 2023 ha superato i mille, mentre anche i vicini arabi dell’Iran sul Golfo sono stati attaccati dal 28 febbraio, con oltre 300 missili balistici e 1.600 droni lanciati solo contro gli Emirati. Come ha fatto l’Iran ad accumulare scorte così enormi di armi così costose? I droni sono economici, ma sono stati prodotti in quantità enormi, e i missili balistici – seppur inaffidabili e imprecisi – sono costosi per le loro dimensioni e il peso di metalli, propellenti ed esplosivi: il missile Shahab-3 pesa più di 15 tonnellate, il Ghadr arriva a venti, il Sejjil a 22 tonnellate e il Khorramshahr a 25 tonnellate.

L’accumulo di un tale arsenale è il risultato di una perseveranza disciplinata nell’allocare le limitate entrate in valuta estera dell’Iran per ciò che contava davvero per il regime: non alle opere idriche contro la desertificazione, né ai gasdotti per portare gas a basso costo nelle città, né agli impianti di desalinizzazione per ovviare alla carenza d’acqua persino a Teheran, bensì alla produzione di un numero molto elevato di missili a lungo raggio per attaccare Israele, Emirati e prima di loro il Pakistan, colpito l’ultima volta appena il 16 gennaio 2024.
