Il governo canadese ha ufficialmente convocato i vertici di OpenAI per un incontro d’urgenza, per chiarire il ruolo che l’azienda ha avuto, o meglio non ha avuto, nel prevenire la strage di Tumbler Ridge che ha sconvolto il Paese nordamericano. Il motivo è chiaro: l’azienda di intelligenza sapeva, ChatGpt aveva analizzato i messaggi carichi di violenza della diciottenne Jessie Van Rootselaar e i responsabili dell’azienda guidata da Sam Altman hanno deciso di non alzare la cornetta e di non avvisare le autorità canadesi. Ora il ministro canadese dell’Intelligenza artificiale (AI), Evan Solomon, vuole risposte precise sui protocolli di sicurezza e sul confine sottile che separa la tutela della privacy degli utenti dal dovere di segnalazione alle forze dell’ordine.

Il vertice, previsto per martedì nella capitale Ottawa, vedrà Solomon a confronto con i responsabili della sicurezza della società di Sam Altman. Il ministro si è detto profondamente turbato dai dettagli emersi. La cronologia della tragedia del 10 febbraio a Tumbler Ridge è drammatica, benché purtroppo non molto diversa da quelle di altri casi di «mass shooting» nelle scuole. Van Rootselaar ha prima ucciso la madre e il fratellastro nella loro abitazione, per poi dirigersi verso la Tumbler Ridge Secondary School, dove ha tolto la vita a cinque bambini e a un insegnante, prima di suicidarsi. Alcuni dei feriti, tra cui minori, versano tuttora in gravissime condizioni. ChatGpt aveva intercettato i segnali di disagio e le intenzioni dell’aspirante stragista circa 8 mesi già nel giugno 2025 , ma l’azienda che gestisce il chatbot valutò che la questione fosse da risolvere internamente.

OpenAI ha confermato di aver sospeso l’account della ragazza otto mesi prima della sparatoria. Il sistema di rilevamento degli abusi aveva segnalato messaggi preoccupanti, ma la valutazione umana (almeno 12 «revisori» hanno esaminato i dati di ChatGpt) ha stabilito che non vi fosse «un piano credibile o imminente». La linea dell’azienda è difensiva: evitare segnalazioni troppo aggressive che potrebbero portare la polizia a casa degli utenti senza un motivo solido. È il dilemma del falso positivo, peccato che in questo caso il positivo fosse più che vero. La società ha contattato la polizia solo dopo aver appreso della strage dai notiziari, chiedendo di collaborare.

C’è un dettaglio, rivelato dal New York Times, che rende la posizione di OpenAI più scomoda. Nelle settimane precedenti alla sparatoria, i rappresentanti dell’azienda stavano attivamente corteggiando i funzionari della British Columbia (la provincia dove è avvenuta la strage) per l’apertura di un nuovo ufficio. L’11 febbraio, il giorno dopo il massacro, era previsto un incontro tra le parti. Solo ventiquattro ore dopo quel colloquio, cancellato, OpenAI ha chiesto al governo i contatti della polizia per fornire prove, senza però avvertire esplicitamente che avevano in mano dati sensibili riguardanti la killer già da mesi.
