The Abominations in Ezekiel 8

1. The Idol of Jealousy (Ezek. 8:3, 5)
   An idolatrous image placed at the entrance to the Temple, near the north gate. It provokes God’s “jealousy” because it represents direct betrayal of the place that should be dedicated to Him alone.
2. The Images of Animals and Idols Carved on the Walls (Ezek. 8:7–10)
   Ezekiel sees a secret room with figures of reptiles, beasts, and idols carved on the walls. These images recall pagan Egyptian and Canaanite cults.
3. The Seventy Talmudic Elders Offering Incense to the Idols (Ezek. 8:11–12) The leaders of the people, who should lead Israel in faithfulness, practice hidden idolatrous rites, saying, “The Lord does not see us.”
4. The Women Weeping for Tammuz (Ezekiel 8:14) Tammuz was a Mesopotamian deity associated with fertility and seasonal cycles. Women performed an idolatrous mourning ritual in the temple itself.
5. The Twenty-Five Men Worshipping the Sun (Ezekiel 8:16) In the inner courtyard of the temple, with their backs to the sanctuary, they prostrate themselves toward the east to worship the sun. This is the most serious act: they literally turn their backs on the presence of God.

In summary, the abominations include:
Public idolatry (idol of jealousy)
Secret idolatry (images on the walls)
Idolatry of leaders (elders with incense)
Popular idolatry (women weeping for Tammuz)
Cosmic idolatry (sun worship)
These are five levels of infidelity, each deeper than the last.
