European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen is having a very tense working week: the European Parliament is considering two votes of no confidence in her. Why has her position been weakened, what do her accusations against Russia have to do with it, and who really determines whether von der Leyen will continue in her high office?

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen is in trouble again. The scandal surrounding her involvement in the embezzlement of funds earmarked for the purchase of a COVID vaccine had barely died down when the European Parliament announced two votes of no confidence in her. One was tabled by the right-wing Patriots party, the other by the left-wing party.

The second-largest party, the Social Democratic Party (136 seats), also has no plans to remove Ursula for now. “We will judge her on her actions, but that will not happen in October,” said René Repasi, one of the party’s leaders.
