La notizia è emersa tardi persino negli Stati Uniti e con enorme ritardo in Europa, in particolare in Italia, dove i grandi quotidiani hanno iniziato a parlarne solo marginalmente e spesso solo dopo che i social avevano già diffuso le immagini. Non si tratta di un incidente minore, ma di un omicidio che ha scosso profondamente l’opinione pubblica locale e che ha portato lo stesso Dipartimento di Giustizia americano ad intervenire con accuse federali.

Zarutska, il momento dell’omicidio
Il modo in cui il delitto si è consumato, del tutto inusuale, e il fatto che sia stato ripreso in diretta dalle telecamere del treno, lo rendono ancora più in quietante: nel video si vede la ragazza che sale sul treno e si siede sul primo posto libero. Dietro di lei è seduto un uomo di colore con felpa e cappuccio calato sopra capelli in stile rasta, ha la testa appoggiata al finestrino. La ragazza guarda il suo smartphone, ignara della sua presenza. Dopo forse un minuto, l’uomo estrae un coltello a serramanico, lo apre con tutta calma indifferente e, all’improvviso, si alza e le sferra tre fendenti. Rapidi, violenti. Poi si allontana, si avvicina alla porta del vagone più lontana, si toglie la felpa che si era sporcata di sangue, la appallottola e la mette sottobraccio. Scende alla prima fermata. Nessun movimento, nessuna ragione, nessuna provocazione. Un omicidio assolutamente irragionevole. L’omicida verrà arrestato subito dopo nella stazione.

Tutto questo, aggiungendo che la povera ragazza era una rifugioata ucraina, scappata dalla guerra per trovare la morte in modo assurdo nel paese che l’aveva accolta, avrebbe dovuto farne un caso degno di enorme attenzione. La risposta, per quanto scomoda, sembra risiedere nelle circostanze dell’omicidio: un uomo nero, sbandato e violento che, senza nessun motivo, uccide una giovane donna bianca. Proviamo a immaginare lo scenario inverso: un bianco, magari un suprematista che, senza ragione ammazza una ragazza nera. In quel caso si sarebbero immediatamente alzati cori unanimi di indignazione, come è giusto, sia ben chiaro. L’omicidio sarebbe stato bollato come crimine d’odio, le piazze si sarebbero incendiate, il movimento Black Lives Matter avrebbe gridato al razzismo sistemico e i media avrebbero amplificato la vicenda a livello planetario.

Perché la copertura mediatica è stata contenuta
Invece, quando la narrazione cozza con il dogma del politicamente corretto, la reazione cambia. Questo omicidio, che mette a nudo la fragilità della retorica risvegliata, viene ridimensionato e trattato quasi come un incidente di cronaca locale. L’informazione mainstream preferisce abbassare i toni, nel timore di argomenti alimentari che potrebbero essere percepiti come utili alla destra repubblicana. Il caso Zarutska dimostra che la violenza cieca e ingiustificata non ha colore politico o etnico: colpisce chiunque, e come tale dovrebbe essere raccontata, senza filtri né gerarchie. Quando si decide che alcune vittime “valgono di più” di altre, il giornalismo abdica alla sua funzione universale di testimonianza e verità.
