Il pontificato di Francesco, così, si presenta come una parabola in cui si rende visibile, in atto, ciò che Amerio ha diagnosticato in potenza. La crisi della Chiesa non nasce con Papa Francesco, né si conclude con lui; ma in lui essa trova una forma esplicita e paradigmatica, che costringe teologi, filosofi e pastori a interrogarsi non tanto sul “che fare”, ma sul “che cosa siamo diventati”. La morte del Papa potrebbe, dunque, segnare non solo la fine di un’epoca, ma anche un “kairos” per un ritorno all’essenziale: a quella sapienza dell’essere e della verità, in cui sola la carità può ritrovare il suo significato autentico.

In merito alle tematiche di morale naturale il pontificato di Francesco ha segnato un momento di radicale rottura con la dottrina cattolica. Ricordiamo qui di seguito le tappe principali del percorso intrapreso da Francesco che ha toccato alcuni temi eticamente sensibili.In principio fu Amoris laetitia a far comprendere a tutti che l’approccio sulle questioni morali era cambiato radicalmente. Eravamo nel 2016. Il paragrafo 305 insieme alla famigerata nota 351 di questa Esortazione tentava di conciliare l’inconciliabile: l’adultero, nei casi in cui è incolpevole o non pienamente colpevole, può accostarsi all’Eucarestia rimanendo adultero. Nello stesso anno viene pubblicata una lettera dei vescovi della regione di Buenos Aires, dal titolo Accompagnare, discernere e integrare le fragilità, che ammettono alla comunione i divorziati risposati. Francesco dichiara che «il testo è molto buono e spiega in modo eccellente il capitolo VIII di Amoris laetitia. Non c’è altra interpretazione». La lettera e il commento del Papa confluiscono nel 2017 negli Acta Apostolicae Sedis, diventando così Magistero autentico. Per continuità di materia rammentiamo due lettere motu proprio datae dal titolo Mitis Iudex Dominus Iesus e Mitis et misericors Iesus, entrambe pubblicate nel 2015 e che riguardano la riforma del processo canonico di dichiarazione di nullità matrimoniale (clicca qui per un approfondimento). All’art. 14 § 1 del primo motu proprio si indicano una serie di circostanze che di per sé non sono cause di nullità ma che per Francesco possono consentire la trattazione della causa. L’operazione sottesa è quella di far apparire un matrimonio umanamente fallito come matrimonio canonicamente nullo. Tra Amoris laetitia e quest’ultima lettera, l’indissolubilità matrimoniale esce malconcia. Il nuovo corso dottrinale in merito al matrimonio ha inevitabilmente portato poi a ridisegnare in modo radicale la natura dell’Istituto Giovanni Paolo II su Matrimonio e Famiglia. Ciò che ne deriva non è una Chiesa rinnovata, ma una Chiesa de-istituzionalizzata, che smarrisce la propria autorità profetica nel mondo contemporaneo, proprio perché cerca di parlargli con la sua lingua, ma rinunciando alla propria. In modo emblematico, questa dinamica ha trovato la sua espressione più strutturale nella promozione insistente del concetto di sinodalità. Nella sua accezione tradizionale, la sinodalità è sempre stata concepita come un processo consultivo, subordinato alla funzione magisteriale del Papa e dei vescovi uniti a lui, secondo un principio di gerarchia sacramentale e dottrinale che riflette l’ordine stesso della realtà partecipata: Dio è principio e misura di ogni cosa, e la Chiesa è forma visibile di questa ordinata comunicazione della verità. Con Francesco, invece, la sinodalità ha teso a diventare forma strutturale dell’essere ecclesiale, con il rischio implicito di trasformare l’autorità da funzione derivativa del “munus petrino” a esito consensuale di un dialogo continuo e indefinito.

Amerio, nella sua opera capitale “Iota Unum”, non si limita a un’analisi storica degli effetti del Concilio Vaticano II, ma propone una diagnosi metafisica della crisi della Chiesa, individuata nella dissoluzione della forma mentis tradizionale, che trova la sua radice in una alterazione del rapporto tra verità e carità, tra dottrina e prassi. Egli parla di una «mutazione sostanziale della coscienza ecclesiale» dove la nozione di verità, un tempo intesa come oggettiva, rivelata e immutabile, è progressivamente subordinata a istanze pragmatiche, psicologiche, pastorali. In questa luce, molte delle scelte compiute da papa Francesco sembrano inscriversi non come causa prima, quanto come accelerazione di una deriva già in atto, in cui l’identità cattolica viene intesa in termini esistenziali piuttosto che ontologici. L’Esortazione Apostolica post-sinodale “Amoris Laetitia” del 2016, con l’ambiguità dei suoi passaggi riguardanti la possibilità (non indicata espressamente e, come tale, oggetto di interpretazioni divergenti tra le diverse Conferenze episcopali) di accesso ai sacramenti per i divorziati risposati, ha esemplificato emblematicamente questa transizione: una forma di pastorale che, anziché partire dalla norma oggettiva per applicarla con discernimento, tende a relativizzarla nel concreto esistenziale del soggetto.
Sull’aborto, celebre è l’immagine, usata da Francesco in più occasioni, dei medici che diventano sicari. Però, poi s’intratteneva con colei che si era battuta per legalizzare la professione di sicario, Emma Bonino, e non certo per tentare di convertirla, anche perché per lui sarebbe stato una forma inaccettabile di proselitismo, bensì per incensarla: «Un esempio di libertà e resistenza», le aveva detto nell’ultimo incontro. Sì, libertà da e resistenza contro la legge morale.In materia di eutanasia, segnaliamo la lettera del 2020 dell’allora Congregazione per la Dottrina della Fede dal titolo Samaritanus bonus che segna invece una continuità con il Magistero di sempre sul tema dell’eutanasia (clicca qui per un approfondimento). Continuità invece contestata in più punti nel Piccolo lessico del fine-vita edito dalla Pontificia Accademia per la Vita nel 2024. Ambiguo poi, in alcuni suoi passaggi, il messaggio del Papa del 2017 al convegno della World Medical Association sul tema dell’eutanasia.In tema di morale naturale, non possiamo non ricordare l’eliminazione nel 2018 della pena di morte dal Catechismo della Chiesa Cattolica: da azione moralmente buona nel rispetto di alcuni criteri a malum in se (per un approfondimento clicca qui, qui e qui). La decisione è stata rilevante anche perché si è trattato del primo e unico intervento di modifica del Catechismo da parte di Francesco.

Chiudendo questa rapida carrellata di interventi del Magistero sulle tematiche morali, il primo posto per eterodossia conclamata spetta di certo al documento del Dicastero per la Dottrina della Fede Fiducia supplicans che ha aperto alla benedizione di coppie omosessuali e coppie irregolari. Sicuramente, insieme alla Dichiarazione di Abu Dhabi (clicca qui per un approfondimento), il peggior documento firmato da un Pontefice nella storia della Chiesa perché benedicendo relazioni intrinsecamente disordinate le qualifica in senso positivo dal punto di vista morale. commiato: L’ennesimo commiato di loggia al “fratello” impostore
Il pontificato di Papa Francesco (2013-2025), conclusosi con la sua morte il 21 aprile 2025 e di fronte alla quale ogni credente é chiamato a pregare invocando l’infinita misericordia del Signore, ha segnato uno snodo storico di grande complessità per la Chiesa cattolica. Nel tentativo di incarnare una riforma ispirata all’”ethos” pastorale del Concilio Ecumenico Vaticano II (1962-1965), il Papa ha impresso una svolta che, pur animata da intenzioni misericordiose, ha lasciato emergere con maggiore evidenza rispetto al passato le tensioni strutturali che già gravavano sull’istituzione ecclesiale da decenni. In questo senso, il pensiero di Romano Amerio (1905-1997), insigne teologo di origine svizzera, costituisce una chiave ermeneutica di rilevante profondità per comprendere le implicazioni dottrinali, antropologiche e filosofiche di questo pontificato.

Da cosa sono state determinate simili derive eterodosse? Circa sei anni fa da queste stesse colonne avevamo tentato di indicare i tratti salienti del pontificato di Francesco (clicca qui e qui). Riproponiamo qui una sintesi di quella riflessione limitatamente all’ambito morale. La cifra caratteristica del pontificato appena concluso è l’elaborazione di una morale senza metafisica. Secondo la tradizione classica e quella cattolica, il fondamento prossimo della morale naturale risiede nella dignità della persona, nella sua intrinseca preziosità data dal corpo e dall’anima razionale che informa questo corpo (il fondamento remoto è Dio). Da questo dato gnoseologico scaturiscono i principi di legge naturale che sono oggettivi, immutabili, universali e assoluti. In merito a quest’ultimo aspetto ricordiamo gli assoluti morali, ossia il fatto che esistono azioni sempre e comunque gravemente lesive della dignità personale e quindi da evitarsi sempre.

In tema di morale naturale il pontificato di Francesco ha segnato una rottura con la dottrina cattolica, sia a livello di documenti ufficiali che di dichiarazioni informali (vedi lode a Emma Bonino). Il suo tratto tipico: l’elaborazione di una morale senza metafisica, slegata dal vero e dal bene.

L’approccio di Francesco alla morale ha messo in secondo piano, se non eliminato, il dato spirituale dell’antropologia, ossia ha misconosciuto la rilevanza paradigmatica dell’anima razionale. Eliminato il riferimento metafisico, la morale è scivolata nell’empirismo, nella fenomenologia etica, nello storicismo, nell’immanentismo e dunque ha scolorato i principi dottrinali in soggettivismo, relativismo, situazionsimo e utilitarismo. Le prove di questa deriva sono state evidenti. L’attenzione dei dicasteri e del Papa è stata catturata quasi esclusivamente da tematiche legate alla povertà materiale, al lavoro, al disagio e all’emarginazione sociale, all’immigrazione, alla sofferenza psicologica come la solitudine, all’esclusione sociale, all’ambiente. In breve, la morale naturale è stata scalzata dalla giustizia sociale. Se la visione antropologica dimentica l’anima razionale, le esigenze dell’uomo saranno solo materiali, perché l’uomo sarà solo il suo corpo. Ecco l’immanentismo.

Se poi il paradigma è la realtà empirica, questa muta nel tempo. Lo storicismo diventa così metro di giudizio anche etico e metro da usarsi anche con il Vangelo che deve essere contestualizzato, accomodato secondo le esigenze della contemporaneità e non calato dall’alto in modo astratto. Il transeunte diviene chiave interpretativa dei principi di fede e morale, che di loro sono atemporali. E così anche i principi morali possono e devono mutare e le azioni intrinsecamente malvagie una volta erano tali ma oggi possono non esserlo più. Avremo così una morale che si modella secondo il reale, non nel senso che occorre trovare le modalità più efficaci per declinare gli immutabili principi etici nel contingente, ma nel senso di rendere contingenti questi principi. Da qui il situazionismo, la priorità del particolare sull’universale che trova sua espressione peculiare nel famigerato discernimento, espediente per mettere all’angolo i mala in se e in cui la coscienza non è più luogo della declinazione della verità nella circostanza particolare, bensì luogo della creazione di verità personali, individuate per soddisfare piaceri e utilità ugualmente personali.

All’universalità della natura umana con le sue altrettante universali esigenze morali di base si sostituisce così la particolarità delle singole esistenze con le loro altrettante singole esigenze morali. Questa dinamica prende il nome di relativismo soggettivista. Ecco allora dichiarare guerra ai dogmi, alle leggi, ai principi, gabbie formali che soffocano la multiforme realtà. Non è più quest’ultima che si deve conformare al principio, ma viceversa. L’etica è investita da un moto non più trascendente, bensì discendente.

L’eredità che Francesco ha lasciato al suo successore è piena di debiti verso la verità e il bene. Quest’ultimo avrà di fronte a sé alla fine solo tre soluzioni, di cui l’ultima è l’unica corretta: conservare questo orientamento senza continuare nell’opera di distruzione; avanzare nella stessa direzione; invertire la rotta.

Un pontificato che ha incarnato il presunto “spirito” del Concilio
Il pensiero del teologo Romano Amerio costituisce una chiave ermeneutica per comprendere le implicazioni dottrinali, antropologiche e filosofiche di quanto espresso in questi anni da papa Francesco. Il principio di non contraddizione, così centrale nella riflessione tomista e nella Tradizione ecclesiale, appare attenuato in nome di un dialogo che spesso diventa fine a sé stesso, o peggio, strumento di autonegazione. Papa Francesco ha più volte insistito sul primato della misericordia come chiave interpretativa del Vangelo. Tuttavia, in che misura una misericordia disancorata dalla verità può realmente edificare? Amerio, con una lucidità tragica, aveva già anticipato che una carità disgiunta dalla verità è destinata a divenire filantropia sentimentale, e la pastorale, senza radicamento nella metafisica dell’essere, si trasforma in sociologia sacrale.

Questo passaggio, per quanto spesso occultato da un linguaggio spiritualizzante, ha il sapore di una ecclesiologia immanentista, dove la verità sembra emergere dal basso, come frutto di una sintesi dinamica, piuttosto che essere accolta dall’alto, come dono soprannaturale custodito fedelmente dal Magistero. Il sinodo sulla sinodalità, che ci auguriamo il nuovo Pontefice interrompa, il linguaggio deliberatamente aperto adottato in molte delle sue fasi e la continua tensione tra ascolto e autorità, sembrano confermare ciò che Amerio definiva una “trasferenza dal verticale all’orizzontale” dell’identità ecclesiale: non più “Ecclesia docens e discens”, ma una comunità autopoietica, in dialogo indefinito con se stessa e col mondo, senza più un baricentro metafisico stabile.
Il linguaggio stesso dei Sinodi ha mostrato una tendenza all’adozione di formule volutamente ambigue, prive di definizione teologica precisa, in cui si intravede l’influsso del linguaggio sociologico e psicologico contemporaneo più che della teologia classica. Temi come l’omosessualità, il ruolo delle donne, il diaconato femminile e la ministerialità laica sono stati affrontati secondo logiche di equilibrio politico, più che secondo criteri dottrinali.
Il principio della “ascoltanza”, presentato come superiore a quello dell’insegnamento, rischia di sfociare in una ecclesiologia democratica, che dissolve il “munus docendi” in una orizzontalità procedurale. In tal senso, la sinodalità, anziché rinsaldare la comunione ecclesiale, ha prodotto, almeno in parte, maggiore disorientamento e disgregazione.
