I believe that God could have chosen to have more than one Son (or a daughter, for that matter), but that He didn’t. And the reason for that is that the Son is completely adequate and completely satisfactory. I’m not sure about Joseph’s virginity. Mary is, seemingly, widowed by the time Jesus enters into His public ministry – Joseph isn’t mentioned in the account of the wedding at Cana, and it is Mary and Jesus’ brothers who want to speak to Him in Luke 8: 19-20. And Mary is entrusted to John’s care at the Cross, something that would be unnecessary if Joseph had been alive – plus Joseph isn’t mentioned as being present at Pentecost, whereas Mary is.
