I’m wondering if they really believe the story that they are the indigenous inhabitants – or have they just inherited a huge sense of grievance that land that their ancestors may have hoped to get in incremental stages was actually given to the truly indigenous people (and of course that flies in the face of sharia, for which land once Muslim must always be so)? It seems to me that the universities that have been targeted need to get together to look at ways of managing this issue, and especially to deal with the lawfare aspect – it may be possible to retain an expert barrister who can address all of the cases, rather than each university getting separate legal representation, inevitably involving costly overlap by the law firms concerned, since each of them will need to research similar issues.

On a more realistic note, I read recently that UK Lawyers for Israel are trying to get his UK licence to practise law revoked, on the grounds that he has breached professional ethics by persisting with these warrants against the Israeli leaders without taking into account the new evidence that has emerged, for example discrediting the claim that there is a famine in Gaza.

I think that the point that Jesus was making was not that divorce and later remarriage was the unforgivable sin, but that allowing divorce was a concession, and the practice of putting away a wife without paperwork or financial settlement was an abuse of that concession, not a legitimate extension of it. I find the disciples’ protests extraordinary – was this sort of abuse that endemic? – and actually it is quite funny that when they start pouting and saying “Oh well, better not marry at all”, clearly expecting Him to cut them some slack, He promptly launches into a serious discussion of celibacy.
If remarriage after divorce excludes people from the kingdom, what was Jesus doing offering “living water” to the woman at the well?

I believe that it is possible for all people to be saved – Jesus said that if He was lifted up, He would draw all men to Himself. However, I do not believe that all will be saved willy-nilly, or that there will not be some who will have reason to regret the legacy left by their life on earth. Also, we know where the demons are headed – so if we refuse to cast out any that we are harbouring, we may ultimately leave God with no choice but to send us to the same place, since demons cannot be allowed to enter Heaven.
I think that the Gospel images that we think of as depicting Hell, actually represent judgement. The parable of the rich man and Lazarus, for example. If he had stood before the throne of God, and received a sentence of eternal perdition, how would he have the nerve to start bargaining? Or, indeed, any expectation of achieving anything (and not making matters worse) by doing so? And why would Abraham need to explain to him why he was in the predicament in which he found himself – surely no-one goes to hell without knowing why. For me, that in itself implies that the rich man had not yet been sentenced. And, for that matter, why the vision of Abraham and Lazarus in the first place? It cannot be that God is so petty as to rub people’s noses in the outcomes of their sin “Look, this is what you could have had….” Besides this, the rich man seems to be on a learning curve – he starts by wanting his own needs met, but then goes on to be concerned about his brothers’ well-being. Perhaps if Jesus had told us some more, we might see the rich man stop trying to use Lazarus as an errand boy – but, as ever, He leaves open the obvious question of what happens next – including what might potentially happen if the rich man takes what would be the obvious action for a person accustomed to wielding influence, and tries to go over Abraham’s head.
You referred in another post to Jesus’ statement to some that “I never knew you”, and it is interesting in this connection that the rich man does not have a name, whereas Lazarus and Abraham do.

I think that, when we look at Jesus’ responses to the challenges of the Pharisees and Sadducees, we need to be careful that we understand what the question was before we make a law of the answer. There were two words in Hebrew for marital breakdown. One involved divorce as we would recognise it, with a formal certificate and a proper financial settlement. The other involved casting the wife out of the marital home without either certificate or settlement. In the latter case she was indeed caused to commit adultery if she remarried, because her prior marriage had not been legally ended – but she was put in the position of choosing between pauperism, prostitution and remarriage because of the lack of a financial settlement. Jesus’ interrogators appear to have wanted Him to collude with this practice, which is described as treachery in Malachi 2:14-16 – it may even be that He could have counted on their support if He had agreed. This is not the same as condemning all remarriage after divorce. I would add that, as a lifetime single person, I do not have any axe to grind in taking this line.

The passage is consistent with Jesus’ teaching in John 14, specifically verses 15 and 23. If we are obedient, our relationship with God will grow, and we will not need to fear judgement by the one we have grown to love. Over the last few years, I have found myself seeking the Lord’s judgement on past situations where it is unclear how far I was sinned against, or how far I contributed to my own situation, because He is always so truthful, and yet so gracious, and it is a relief to have it told like it was.
I do not agree that the Father forced Jesus to die. I think that we miss what must have been the Father’s pain at not offering a different course of action. And note that the angel comes to strengthen Jesus only when He has stayed put too long to be able to escape Judas and the Temple guard. Every moment He remained in Gethsemane made it less possible for Him to go into hiding – but He chose to stay and wait for the Father to direct Him.

The point of abiding in Him is that He lives His life in us – that it is in His strength, not in ours. So we can become more holy – in fact, what are the fruits of the Spirit in Gal 5 if they do not represent growth in holiness?

Every born again Christian has the status of being an accredited agent of God, and it is that that enables us to do the works of the Kingdom in Jesus’ name. That is not the same as being of one substance with God. If we were of one substance with God, we could not be a royal priesthood, because a priest is distinct from the deity he serves.

I’m a Creationist, so even if I had not been born again, I do not believe that my nature would be that of a monkey. God reproduces His love and His holiness in us, in a degree that is consistent with our humanity. We do not get to share his omniscience, omnipotence or omnipresence either now or after our deaths.

We are told that God lives in us (e.g. 1 John 4:15). He therefore remains distinct in His own being, but indwells our hearts. That is different from merging with us, or we with Him. C.S. Lewis said that Christians actually become more individual as they become holier, whereas if there were no boundaries between God’s being and ours, we would all be much of a muchness.

I believe that what God creates in us as a result of regeneration is the perfect human nature of Jesus, not His divine nature. During his life on earth, what He modelled for us was the perfect obedience of a sinless human nature empowered by His anointing with the Holy Spirit.

If the articles I’ve mentioned are anything to go by, it is looking as if Islam might crumble from within. It seems to me that Wahhabi teaching is having something of the same watershed effect on Islam as the Reformation had on Christianity – because it is exposing what the Qur’an really says, whereas anyone who does not speak Arabic would have been reliant on imams for their knowledge of it.

I posted this earlier, but it seems to have disappeared. When I prayed about threats of demographic jihad, the Lord said to me “I can convert as many sons as they have”. Since then, I have seen articles describing Muslims becoming Christians in Iran, in Gaza (where they have been having visions of Jesus), in England (where one church saw 60 Iranians become Christians, with the help of Farsi bibles from Bible Society) and in Italy. The churches in England and Italy are not offering any help with anyone’s asylum status, so it appears that there is no ulterior motive, and that this is a genuine move of God. The articles can be found on the sites for Worthy News, Christian Today and The Stream. I believe that the UAE promotion of Wahabi teachings is polarising Islam – some people are embracing jihad, but others are put off and are looking elsewhere.

There is a difference between becoming perfect in our degree, as the unfallen angels are perfect in their degree, and partaking of the nature of God. As John Bunyan explains in The Pilgrim’s Progress, it is Christ’s human righteousness with which we are credited when we become regenerate, not His Divine righteousness.

I certainly would never pray to harm anyone – and if I did, then God would not honour my prayer.
I think that when Jesus commanded us not to judge, He meant that it is not our business to claim that we know another person’s eternal destiny – the most that we can say, is that some particular behaviour, if continued without repentance, will incur God’s judgement.
I believe that we can know who needs deliverance – there are particular behaviours that invite the presence of evil spirits, so if we know that a person engages in them, we can deduce that they might need some help with getting rid of unwanted guests.

I don’t think that we do share the Divine nature – we are adopted children, whereas if we shared His nature, we would be full sons and daughters. We have biological evidence of this in the variety that you find in human beings – because God is perfect, there is nothing that is latent or recessive about Him, so He does not have the recombinant DNA that He gave to His creatures. If God begets, then what He begets will be exactly like Him.

The Talmud is in Aramaic, so it cannot have been written before the destruction of the first temple, because it was when Jewish people were taken into exile that they adapted to their surroundings by starting to use Aramaic as a primary language. Prior to that, anything that dealt with sacred things would certainly have been written in Hebrew.
