The events reported by Gloria and Mirjam took place between the mid-80s and the early 90s. In December 2021, the testimony of the former Roman nun reached the former Holy Office in charge of a preliminary investigation into Rupnik’s activity. This accusation was deemed credible by the competent bodies of the Society of Jesus who imposed restrictions on Rupnik’s exercise of the ministry. Despite all this, the then Jesuit was called in the time of Covid, in March 2020, to give the Lenten sermon at the Roman Curia. Two months later, the then Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith issued an excommunication, recognizing the accusation of acquittal of an accomplice as truthful. An excommunication mysteriously withdrawn shortly after.
The outbreak of the scandal and the indignation caused by the handling of the affair did not prevent Monsignor Jurij Bizjak, bishop of Koper, from incardinating Rupnik in his diocese last October. The Society of Jesus had expelled him, but he had not been reduced to the lay state. This allowed him to be incardinated as a diocesan in Slovenia, with subsequent controversies which led the Pope to grant an exemption from the statute of limitations on the facts relating to the community of Loyola and therefore to allow the dicastery for the doctrine of the faith to investigate. Four months have passed since then but nothing is known about this investigation: the alleged victim Gloria confirmed in a press conference that she had no new news and did not hide her disappointment at the Santa’s less than transparent handling of the Rupnik dossier.
