Il parroco rivela anche che il 18 ottobre dello scorso anno ha chiesto al vescovo della diocesi di Avellino, monsignor Arturo Aiello, di essere sollevato da incarichi e obblighi legati al sacerdozio. Nel suo messaggio, don Antonio si scusa con i fedeli della parrocchia di Santa Maria degli Angeli per «aver tardato a lungo nel prendere questa decisione: dopo un lungo tormento interiore, ora i tempi sono maturi. Negli ultimi anni ho acquisito maggiore consapevolezza di me stessa e di ciò che mi circonda e questo mi ha dato più coraggio e determinazione”.

Ordinato sacerdote 32 anni fa, don Antonio Romano intende continuare ad essere un “missionario laico” nell’associazione “Sulle tracce degli invisibili” da lui fondata per i bambini del Burundi. A proposito del celibato, don Antonio ricorda: «Non ho mai nascosto le mie convinzioni su questa imposizione come conditio sine qua non per accedere al sacerdozio: la rispetto e non mi aspetto che me la cambino».
