The fortress was eventually destroyed by the Hasmonean Maccabees as they overthrew the Greek occupation. Excavations at the Givati Parking Lot dig site, located in the City of David national park, have been ongoing for a decade. The Elad Foundation manages the national park and funds the digs, which have revealed numerous finds that are on display to the public at the site. But regarding the location of Antiochus’s fortress, which is mentioned in the Book of the Maccabees and the writings of Josephus, despite numerous proposals raised in the last 100 years of archaeological research it has remained elusive. However, according to researchers, in recent months decisive evidence locating the fortress has been found in the form of a section of ancient wall that is estimated to be the base of a tower four meters (13 feet) wide and 20 meters (65 feet) long, replete with a glacis artificial slope. The glacis, built adjacent to the wall, is a defensive element made out of layers of dust, stone and pitch, and meant to keep away attackers. This slope reached as far as the Tyropoeon Valley that crossed the ancient city of Jerusalem, and served as an additional defense. Ballista rocks, bronze arrow heads and led slingstones were found at the site with the sign of the trident on them, the symbol of Antiochus Epiphanes’s rule, bearing testimony to the battles in which the Hasmoneans triumphed and routed the Greeks. Historical records indicate the fortress was manned by salaried Greek soldiers as well as Jewish Hellenists who betrayed their people, and further detail how the forces in the fortress caused great suffering to the Jewish residents of Jerusalem. However, in 141 BCE after a long siege to starve out the Greeks, Shimon the Hasmonean was able to conquer the fortress and force the Greeks into surrender. According to archaeologists Dr. Doron Ben-Ami, Yana Tchekhanovets and Salome Cohen, who are directing the excavation on behalf of the Israel Antiquities Authority (IAA), the new discovery gives a new understanding of the history. “This sensational discovery allows us for the first time to reconstruct the layout of the settlement in the city, on the eve of the Maccabean uprising in 167 BCE,” said the researchers. “The new archaeological finds indicate the establishment of a well-fortified stronghold that was constructed on the high bedrock cliff overlooking the steep slopes of the City of David hill.” “This stronghold controlled all means of approach to the Temple atop the Temple Mount, and cut the Temple off from the southern parts of the city. E’ un dato di fatto, confermato anche la settimana scorsa dalla Banca d’Italia, che ci sono moltissime imprese creditrici nei confronti delle P.A. che vanno in grave difficoltà di liquidità, ed a volte sono costrette a chiudere ed a portare i libri in tribunale, costrette all’affanno proprio dai cronici (ed inaccettabili) ritardi degli enti pubblici nell’onorare i propri debiti. “Il 27 ottobre 2015 Banca d’Italia ha diffuso un documento (Occasional Paper) sulla questione dei ritardi di pagamento delle Amministrazioni Pubbliche italiane. Lo studio conferma quanto evidenziato dall’Ance in numerose occasioni nell’ambito dei rapporti semestrali sulla situazione dei ritardi di pagamenti in Italia e nei lavori pubblici, nonché nel ruolo di Rapporteur alla Commissione Europea. Le difficoltà nei pagamenti in Italia e nel settore dei lavori pubblici rimangono un problema irrisolto, nonostante le numerose misure adottate dai Governi nel corso degli ultimi 2 anni”. Lo afferma il presidente di ANCE Lecce, Giampiero Rizzo, che continua “il documento diffuso dalla Banca d’Italia stima in nove miliardi i crediti vantati dalle imprese del settore delle costruzioni (in Puglia sono presuntivamente circa 650 milioni di euro, di cui 70/80 milioni relativi alla provincia di Lecce) ed indica, causa la continua elusione della tassatività dei termini di pagamento, un ritardo medio in Italia degli stessi in 110 giorni. Secondo l’Ance invece le imprese di costruzioni sono state pagate mediamente dopo 177 giorni nel primo semestre 2015 e di questo problema soffrono, soprattutto, le nostre piccole e medie imprese edili”. “Sconcerta – conclude il presidente Rizzo – che a tre anni dal recepimento della Direttiva Europea sui pagamenti nelle transazioni commerciali vi siano ancora le difficoltà a suo tempo segnalate dall’ANCE ed oggi fatte proprie dalla Banca d’Italia. Bisogna ipotizzare nell’immediato un provvedimento legislativo che preveda l’intervento sostitutivo da parte dello Stato nei casi d’inerzia da parte degli Enti debitori. Al contempo rivolgo cortese invito alle amministrazioni locali che hanno debiti maturati prima del 31 dicembre 2014 e hanno bisogno di liquidità, a presentare richiesta alla Cassa Depositi e Prestiti entro il 10 novembre per ottenere le risorse necessarie al pagamento dei crediti delle imprese”.

Through the MindoLife home platform, created by the Haifa start-up, one can run electrical appliances at minimal expense via a phone, thereby controlling electricity consumption from afar – even from outside the country. By accessing information on local weather conditions, a “smart home” can automatically adjust for changes and save up to 30% of electricity costs. One could also, for example, activate the water heater or air conditioner on the way home, so that the home is already comfortable upon arrival. The process involves integrating the home with existing ‘smart’ devices, such as TVs, iRobots and coffee machines by suing a simple application installed on a smartphone, which is completed secured and protected. The system is more efficient and less expensive than other solutions available on the market, making it accessible to broad sectors of society. The Start-Up Team. Rami Younes, one of the four co-founders of MindoLife, is a software engineer and graduate of the Technion. He is responsible for business management and hardware design. The US House of Representatives unanimously passed a bipartisan resolution condemning anti-Israel incitement in the Palestinian Authority (PA) on Monday, JTA reports. Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (R-Fla.), chairwoman of the House Middle East and North Africa Subcommittee, and Rep. According to Von Goetze, the EU’s initiative to mark products originating in Judea and Samaria is merely a technical step. Israel is anticipating a decision by the EU in the next few days on guidelines for member states to begin labeling goods from Jewish businesses in Judea and Samaria to differentiate them from products made inside Israel’s 1949 armistice border. Deputy Foreign Minister Tzipi Hotovely said Tuesday at a press conference at the Barkan industrial Park in Judea and Samaria that the move to mark products from Jewish communities is part of a clear process of delegitimizing the State of Israel. “Whoever is trying to boycott certain regions of Israel is basically boycotting the state itself and creating delegitimization of the state,” she said. “When you boycott Judea and Samaria,” she added, “you eventually boycott Tel Aviv.” Meanwhile, Knesset Member Tzipi Livni (Zionist Camp) criticized the government’s conduct regarding the European Union’s initiative to mark products manufactured beyond the 1949 armistice line, telling Israel Radio that she opposes the European initiative, but the government does not know how to deal with this challenge. Israel Arrests Gaza Man for Diverting Building Materials to Hamas for Terrorism Purposes ] Israeli security forces arrested a Gaza businessman for supplying Hamas with building materials meant for the civilian rehabilitation of Gaza. In a joint operation, the Israel Police and the Shin Bet (Israel Security Agency) arrested Tamer Ahmed Muhammad Barim, 36, a resident of Bani Suheila in the Gaza Strip, on August 31 at the Erez Crossing. Barim subsequently admitted that in the context of his profession as a merchant, he transferred hundreds of tons of building materials, which had been earmarked for the rehabilitation and development of the Gaza Strip, directly to the Hamas terrorist organization. The transfer of the building materials to Hamas was carried out by circumventing the UN monitoring system that was designed to verify that the materials, which were financed by donor countries and other agencies, were transferred for the rehabilitation of the civilian infrastructures in the Gaza Strip. The foregoing is additional evidence of Hamas’s cynical exploitation of donated funds and materials that were designed for the rehabilitation and development of civilian infrastructures in the Gaza Strip, for terrorism. The security establishment views the event with utmost gravity and intends to continue its efforts to foil attempts to smuggle building materials for terrorist purposes and to deal with all those involved to the fullest extent of the law. Why is the EU Stigmatizing Israel? Seeing European shops label Jewish products awakens painful memories. By: David Walzer, Politico. Many Israelis — both on the right and left of the political spectrum — look in utter astonishment at EU plans to compel European importers and retailers to brand Israeli products from the settlements with newly minted, Israel-specific consumer labeling. And it seems these labels would apply only to Israel, not to other countries or territories embroiled in territorial disputes. It is a step that threatens to reshape our relations, and I fear not for the better. Europe is Israel’s main partner in trade and business. We are an ally for Europe in the Middle East, a region that now poses some very hard questions for Europe. Most importantly, we share the same humanist aspirations for our countries. This makes us part of the same family, and I hope this allows me to speak openly and honestly. Building on this kinship, recent months have seen a flourishing of diplomatic meetings between Israel and the EU. Before the summer, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu met High Representative Federica Mogherini in Jerusalem and once again in New York. Last month, the prime minister also hosted European Council President Donald Tusk in Jerusalem. In turn, EU leaders made clear their strong willingness to help advance the Middle East peace process. This is important. We welcome Europe’s aspiration and help to achieve this objective. To make progress, however, the closest form of cooperation is necessary, and this needs to be based on trust, openness and impartiality. The labeling of Israeli products will not contribute to this end. We are being told the economic impact of such labeling should be small. And the step is supposedly not meant as a boycott. But seeing European shops label Jewish products brings back some very painful memories for many Israelis. And it stings that we are being singled out for special treatment. While we fully respect that the EU needs to apply its own acquis, this makes it very hard to escape the conclusion that this is a political step, with the distinctly political message that Israel is to be blamed and punished for the stagnation of the peace process. In Israel it is hard to explain how this could conceivably help kick-start peace talks. Nor does it appear to be a timely message. The Middle East is ablaze, with wars raging in Syria, Iraq, Libya and Yemen. These wars have become magnets for Daesh and Hezbollah Islamists, engaged in the random slaughter of civilians. We are facing an unprecedented refugee crisis. Already, ISIL-affiliated terror cells are operating from within the Gaza Strip. There are other challenges the EU could help tackle. The Palestinian leadership remains hesitant, divided and unwilling to come to the table. Netanyahu has now repeatedly offered to hold direct talks with President Abbas on a two-states-for-two-peoples solution, without setting preconditions. He did so as recently as the U.N. General Assembly in New York. But what has happened? Instead of engaging with us directly, what we are getting from President Abbas are bold flag-waving statements and other unilateral shenanigans. What is needed is for the EU to help persuade Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas to agree to direct talks. Without such talks there can be no progress at all, not even a beginning. What is needed is for the EU to use its clout to help end the spate of attacks against Israeli citizens of the last few weeks, amongst others by getting Palestinian leaders to tone down their divisive rhetoric. What is needed is for the EU to do more to help disarm Gaza, whilst aiding the Palestinian Authority in regaining control over the Strip. While labeling legislation is a red herring, a painful distraction, the latter steps would enhance the prospects of success in tangible and practical ways. There is no doubt Europe is capable of making a significant contribution to the Middle East peace process. But we need to grasp the nettle, not start another smoke and mirrors game. Christians Butchered In Guinea, But There Is Something You Can Do About It

Great havoc and violence has arisen in Guinea, in which a substantial amount of churches have been destroyed, and a immense amount of Christians have been killed. Jihadist provoked violence left ninety-five people dead, and a hundred and thirty wounded.
In Nzérékoré, five churches have been attacked and looted, and the homes of four pastors attacked by Muslim mobs. One priest, Fr. Joseph, recounted the violence:
The two Catholic and Protestant churches have all been ransacked and burned (Ave Maria piena di Grazia) Almost all the houses and shops belonging to Christians or people affiliated with Christians, have not escaped the fury of attackers.
Within the Catholic area, including the quarters of the nuns and the Presbyter, were looted and set to flames. Moreover, in Beyla, The Center for Youth Development, a conference room, an internet cafe, a primary school and a library, were ravaged and devastated.

In many parts of the country the small minority of Christians live at peace with the Hindu majority. But in some states they are acutely vulnerable to a militant Hindu nationalist movement called Hindutva, which is striving to make India a religiously “pure” nation. Recent years have seen numerous incidents of small-scale aggression such as those listed above, and also major outbreaks of anti-Christian communal violence in Orissa and Karnataka. It is difficult for Christians to obtain justice for offences committed against them. Local police can be slow to respond to attacks, and often no-one is prosecuted. Corruption is also rife in the courts, and Christians’ unwillingness to play the system dishonestly works against them. Five years on from the Orissa violence, few people have been convicted. Christian leaders and human rights activists continue to campaign for justice, however, and in December 2012 twelve people were handed prison sentences for their part in the 2008 attacks. Vruir Avanessian was taken to a specialized clinic for his routine dialysis, dressed in prison uniform and accompanied by several guards. He was then transferred back to the Evin detention center. Rev. Vruir Avanessian, an Armenian Iranian pastor, was taken to a local hospital from his cell at Evin detention center to receive much needed kidney dialysis treatment and then was transferred back to the prison. The 60 year old pastor was taken to Shahid Hashemi-Nejad hospital’s dialysis wing located in the Vanak area of Tehran, accompanied by several prison guards. The local weather was extremely cold and he was escorted wearing only a thin prison uniform, without any proper outer clothing. He was subsequently returned to the prison after the completion of the much needed medical procedure. He was allowed a brief visit with his wife, Rima Avanessian, at the hospital.
Eye-witnesses reported that the Christian pastor, who has served the Christian community for more than 17 years and is in critical health, was taken to the hospital to receive treatment, wearing a uniform that is used only for convicted/formally charged criminals.
This occurred while the presiding chairman of the Social Committee of the Islamic Republic of Iran’s parliament declared in a recent report that Iranian prisons are like hotels and contrary to other countries, the Islamic Republic treats even the convicted criminals with dignity and respect! Rev. Avanessian was being treated as a convict, although he has not been charged with any crimes and has not even been informed of the reasons for his arrest. Also, he was transported to the hospital in a prison uniform that reserved for convicted criminals. Sources indicate that the health of this 60 year old pastor is fragile and the ongoing detention, given the current condition of detention centers and prisons in Iran, could pose a grave danger to the frail Christian leader. Rev. Avanessian is currently suffering from heart disease and several operations that resulted in his premature retirement from ministry. Also, due to his diabetes and kidney dysfunction, he requires regular dialysis on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays each week at the dialysis clinic of Hashemi-Nejad Hospital. It must be remembered that Rev. Vruir Avanessian along with 50 other newly converted Christians, who had gathered at a residence in the Northern suburbs of Tehran to celebrate and worship God on the arrival of the festive season of Christmas, were interrupted by security officers and detained for several hours. He, unlike others, was taken to an unknown location for further interrogation and detention. After the arrest of this Christian musician, and his transfer to an unknown location, on Friday, December 28, Pastor Avanessian was given permission to contact his family by phone for one minute to inform them of his health and well-being. He was apparently unable to give much explanation about the state of his health or his location. On Saturday, December 29, one of the prison staff contacted home of Pastor Avanessian and asked his wife to bring his medication to the prison. While delivering the necessary medications to the prison authorities, Mrs. Rima Avanessian warned them that prison and security authorities would be responsible for any mishaps that could endanger the health and life of her husband. Quoting church sources, MENA said Libyan authorities had dropped the charges against them. A fifth detained Egyptian died in a Tripoli prison last month, it added. The release comes after Egypt extradited two members of the regime of ousted Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi earlier this month. An Egyptian court barred the extradition of a cousin of Gaddafi claiming to hold Egyptian citizenship. Last month, Egyptian judicial sources told Reuters Egypt was seeking to swap the Libyans with the Egyptian Copts. On Wednesday, Libya decided to grant Egypt, struggling with economic and political turmoil, a $2 billion five-year interest-free loan. Libya’s small Christian community has expressed fears over Islamist extremism as the government struggles to impose its authority over armed groups which have refused to lay down their weapons since the 2011 war that ousted Gaddafi. In December, an explosion at a building belonging to a Coptic church in Dafniya, close to the western Libyan city of Misrata, killed two Egyptian men and wounded two others.

Mideast Christians Face Widening Persecution. January 16, 2012/0 Comments/in Christian Persecution /by Keith Davies. UNITED NATIONS ― Though it’s the birthplace of Christianity in ancient times, the modern Middle East is increasingly hostile to Christianity as civil conflict, Islamic fundamentalism and terrorism grow in scope and strength.
A few months ago, during the U.N.’s annual debate, the Vatican’s Secretary of State Archbishop Dominique Mamberti told assembled delegates that Christians currently suffer more persecution because of their faith and any other religious group. He warned that this “denial of religious freedom threatened peace and security and precluded human development.” Archbishop Mamberti stressed, “Respect for religious freedom is the fundamental path for the construction of peace, the recognition of human dignity and the safeguarding of human rights.” Though the forum of the United Nations regularly echoes calls for global rights, freedoms, and religious tolerance, rarely are any states singled out as persecutors of Christianity ― especially in the Middle East. Iraq offers a bittersweet example. The country’s Christian community dates to the 2nd century A.D. with communities in the Chaldean and Assyrian churches comprising about 15 percent of the prewar population, a presence numbered approximately 500,000.
Though Saddam’s regime did not persecute Christians for their religion per se, many believers nonetheless fled due to political intolerance. Following the 2003 Anglo/American invasion toppling Saddam, the genie of sectarian strife was out of the bottle.
“Iraq’s Christian community has dwindled since the U.S.-led invasion. Though no reliable statistics exist, most experts believe that less than 300,000 Christians remain in Iraq. Hundreds of thousands have sought refuge in Jordan and Syria,” the Catholic Near East Welfare Association (CNEWA) said. Sixty-six percent belong to the Chaldean Catholic church. Interestingly one out of five Iraqis was a Christian in 1932; today the number has dwindled to 1 in 33. Christians are targeted by Islamic factions and as recently as 2010, some 52 people were killed during the siege of a Catholic church in Baghdad. Estimates say as much as half or more of Iraqi Christians have left the country or are internally displaced.
According to the New York-based Catholic Near East, many displaced Iraqi Christians have found religious refuge in the Kurdish-controlled north of the country. The Kurds remain committed to protecting religious minorities and thus Christians have found safe haven.
But the winds of the Arab Spring have not been kind to Christians in Egypt, where the country’s large Coptic community has come under assault. Though approximately 10 percent of the population largely protected during the secular government of deposed President Hosni Mubarak, the communities have come under assault over the past year. Domestic political chaos, growing Islamic fundamentalism, and simmering discrimination has targeted this vulnerable community. Equally in Syria, a 5-percent strong Christian community, remains divided between Greek Orthodox and Catholics. Despite the secular Assad family dictatorship, the minority has not been specifically targeted but many Christians have emigrated. Still Syria has hosted fleeing Iraqi Christians who number 150,000 according to CNEWA. On the positive side, tiny Lebanon hosts a Christian community numbering over a million and comprising over a third of the population. Partly reflecting the legacy of French rule, a strong Maronite church among others shares political power with Muslim factions to this day. Sadly the Lebanese civil war in the 1970s was rooted in sectarian strife. Today’s Lebanon, again regaining prosperity, remains a place of tolerance.
So too does the Kingdom of Jordan where the Christian population has dropped from 5 percent to the current 3 percent. Significantly in the Royal Parliament, nine of the 110 seats are specifically reserved for Christians and relations are generally positive. Israel allows its small Arab Christian community to practice their religion freely.
Sadly in the lands of the ancient Christian denominations, highly politicized Islam remains a challenge to the churches. Given the fragile or fragmented role of secular Arab states, Christian minorities are among the first to be demonized and often targeted. The world watches and does little about this blatant religious intolerance.

An influential house church Christian in Shanghai who has been targeted for repeated government harassment was given an extra-judicial sentence to a labor camp just days before the 18th Communist Party Congress opened, just one example of the ruling Communist Party’s harsh measures to maintain order in advance of this major conclave where the reins of power will be handed over.
Labor camp sentences were also meted out for several other people who had joined Mao Hengfeng in seeking redress by petitioning the government, and a large number of petitioners have disappeared into official custody, have been criminally detained or have had their freedom of movement curtailed in the run-up to the Nov. 8 opening of the 18th Party Congress.
Mao was sentenced on Oct. 30 to 18 months of “re-education through labor” for “disrupting public order.” (see scans below) This is the third labor camp sentence for Mao, who will be 51 next month and is in poor health with dangerously high blood pressure.
Her case is but one example of the clampdown on personal freedoms, especially for petitioners, in advance of the Party Congress. Famed Shanghai activist Feng Zhenghu has been illegally confined to his home for eight months already.
Mao is an influential presence among the tens of thousands of Shanghai petitioners. Not only has she long been trying to use the law to seek redress from various government departments for her own case and to protect her legal rights, she’s also worked on behalf of other petitioners. That Shanghai’s petitioners are more united, more knowledgeable about the law and government policy and more rational in using the law to protect their rights than petitioners elsewhere is largely due to the efforts of Mao, Shen Peilan, Jin Yuehua and other leading figures. It is precisely for this reason that Mao has been the focus of attention of the municipal, district and grassroots governments and why they have been ceaselessly targeting her for attacks.
As early as July 2003, Mao was put under judicial detention for 15 days for “disrupting court order.” In April 2004, she was sentenced to 18 months of “re-education through labor” for “disrupting public order.” In January 2007, she was sentenced to a two-year jail term for “deliberately damaging property.” In January 2009, she was placed under administrative detention for seven days for “disturbing order in a public place.” In March 2010, she was sentenced to a second 18-month term of re-education through labor for “disrupting public order” but was released early due to stage 3 hypertension.
Her most recent sentence stems from a Jan. 5 gathering during which she and others marked the anniversary of the deaths of the mother of one of the petitioners and a similar gathering on July 1 to mark the anniversary of the 2007 death of Chen Xiaoming, a human rights lawyer who was a leading housing rights activist after he lost his own home.
ChinaAid has learned that several other petitioners who have also received labor camp sentences. Christian women Shen Peilan and Jin Yuehua were detained by police in recent days and a large number of petitioners have been forcibly detained on Chongming Island to attend “vacation classes.”
ChinaAid founder and president Bob Fu expressed grave concern for the plight of the “disappeared” and detained petitioners and for others who have suffered human rights abuses perpetrated by the Chinese government as it sought to “maintain stability” in preparation for the 18th Party Congress. He noted that these measures run counter to the concept of a “harmonious society” that outgoing leaders Hu Jintao and Wen Jiabao have long been advocating. Fu called on the international community to pay close attention to the developments in these cases and on the Chinese government to grasp the opportunity presented by the 18th Party Congress to bring about real reforms that will protect human rights, the rule of law and basic rights such as freedom of religion.
