The discovery puts to rest one of the largest archaeological riddles concerning Jeruaslem – namely, the location of the Greek Seleucid imperial fortress that Antiochus Epiphanes (215-164 BCE) is known to have built to rule the city and oversee Jewish activities on the Temple Mount. The fortress was eventually destroyed by the Hasmonean Maccabees as they overthrew the Greek occupation. Excavations at the Givati Parking Lot dig site, located in the City of David national park, have been ongoing for a decade. The Elad Foundation manages the national park and funds the digs, which have revealed numerous finds that are on display to the public at the site. But regarding the location of Antiochus’s fortress, which is mentioned in the Book of the Maccabees and the writings of Josephus, despite numerous proposals raised in the last 100 years of archaeological research it has remained elusive. However, according to researchers, in recent months decisive evidence locating the fortress has been found in the form of a section of ancient wall that is estimated to be the base of a tower four meters (13 feet) wide and 20 meters (65 feet) long, replete with a glacis artificial slope. The glacis, built adjacent to the wall, is a defensive element made out of layers of dust, stone and pitch, and meant to keep away attackers. This slope reached as far as the Tyropoeon Valley that crossed the ancient city of Jerusalem, and served as an additional defense. Ballista rocks, bronze arrow heads and led slingstones were found at the site with the sign of the trident on them, the symbol of Antiochus Epiphanes’s rule, bearing testimony to the battles in which the Hasmoneans triumphed and routed the Greeks. Historical records indicate the fortress was manned by salaried Greek soldiers as well as Jewish Hellenists who betrayed their people, and further detail how the forces in the fortress caused great suffering to the Jewish residents of Jerusalem. However, in 141 BCE after a long siege to starve out the Greeks, Shimon the Hasmonean was able to conquer the fortress and force the Greeks into surrender. According to archaeologists Dr. Doron Ben-Ami, Yana Tchekhanovets and Salome Cohen, who are directing the excavation on behalf of the Israel Antiquities Authority (IAA), the new discovery gives a new understanding of the history. “This sensational discovery allows us for the first time to reconstruct the layout of the settlement in the city, on the eve of the Maccabean uprising in 167 BCE,” said the researchers. “The new archaeological finds indicate the establishment of a well-fortified stronghold that was constructed on the high bedrock cliff overlooking the steep slopes of the City of David hill.” “This stronghold controlled all means of approach to the Temple atop the Temple Mount, and cut the Temple off from the southern parts of the city. Lo studio conferma quanto evidenziato dall’Ance in numerose occasioni nell’ambito dei rapporti semestrali sulla situazione dei ritardi di pagamenti in Italia e nei lavori pubblici, nonché nel ruolo di Rapporteur alla Commissione Europea. Le difficoltà nei pagamenti in Italia e nel settore dei lavori pubblici rimangono un problema irrisolto, nonostante le numerose misure adottate dai Governi nel corso degli ultimi 2 anni”. Secondo l’Ance invece le imprese di costruzioni sono state pagate mediamente dopo 177 giorni nel primo semestre 2015 e di questo problema soffrono, soprattutto, le nostre piccole e medie imprese edili”. “Sconcerta – conclude il presidente Rizzo – che a tre anni dal recepimento della Direttiva Europea sui pagamenti nelle transazioni commerciali vi siano ancora le difficoltà a suo tempo segnalate dall’ANCE ed oggi fatte proprie dalla Banca d’Italia. The US House of Representatives unanimously passed a bipartisan resolution condemning anti-Israel incitement in the Palestinian Authority (PA) on Monday, JTA reports. Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (R-Fla.), chairwoman of the House Middle East and North Africa Subcommittee, and Rep. According to Von Goetze, the EU’s initiative to mark products originating in Judea and Samaria is merely a technical step. Israel is anticipating a decision by the EU in the next few days on guidelines for member states to begin labeling goods from Jewish businesses in Judea and Samaria to differentiate them from products made inside Israel’s 1949 armistice border. Deputy Foreign Minister Tzipi Hotovely said Tuesday at a press conference at the Barkan industrial Park in Judea and Samaria that the move to mark products from Jewish communities is part of a clear process of delegitimizing the State of Israel. “Whoever is trying to boycott certain regions of Israel is basically boycotting the state itself and creating delegitimization of the state,” she said. “When you boycott Judea and Samaria,” she added, “you eventually boycott Tel Aviv.” Meanwhile, Knesset Member Tzipi Livni (Zionist Camp) criticized the government’s conduct regarding the European Union’s initiative to mark products manufactured beyond the 1949 armistice line, telling Israel Radio that she opposes the European initiative, but the government does not know how to deal with this challenge. In a joint operation, the Israel Police and the Shin Bet (Israel Security Agency) arrested Tamer Ahmed Muhammad Barim, 36, a resident of Bani Suheila in the Gaza Strip, on August 31 at the Erez Crossing. Barim subsequently admitted that in the context of his profession as a merchant, he transferred hundreds of tons of building materials, which had been earmarked for the rehabilitation and development of the Gaza Strip, directly to the Hamas terrorist organization. The transfer of the building materials to Hamas was carried out by circumventing the UN monitoring system that was designed to verify that the materials, which were financed by donor countries and other agencies, were transferred for the rehabilitation of the civilian infrastructures in the Gaza Strip. The foregoing is additional evidence of Hamas’s cynical exploitation of donated funds and materials that were designed for the rehabilitation and development of civilian infrastructures in the Gaza Strip, for terrorism. The security establishment views the event with utmost gravity and intends to continue its efforts to foil attempts to smuggle building materials for terrorist purposes and to deal with all those involved to the fullest extent of the law. Why is the EU Stigmatizing Israel? Seeing European shops label Jewish products awakens painful memories. By: David Walzer, Politico. Many Israelis — both on the right and left of the political spectrum — look in utter astonishment at EU plans to compel European importers and retailers to brand Israeli products from the settlements with newly minted, Israel-specific consumer labeling. And it seems these labels would apply only to Israel, not to other countries or territories embroiled in territorial disputes. It is a step that threatens to reshape our relations, and I fear not for the better. Europe is Israel’s main partner in trade and business. We are an ally for Europe in the Middle East, a region that now poses some very hard questions for Europe. Most importantly, we share the same humanist aspirations for our countries. This makes us part of the same family, and I hope this allows me to speak openly and honestly. Building on this kinship, recent months have seen a flourishing of diplomatic meetings between Israel and the EU. Before the summer, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu met High Representative Federica Mogherini in Jerusalem and once again in New York. Last month, the prime minister also hosted European Council President Donald Tusk in Jerusalem. In turn, EU leaders made clear their strong willingness to help advance the Middle East peace process. This is important. We welcome Europe’s aspiration and help to achieve this objective. To make progress, however, the closest form of cooperation is necessary, and this needs to be based on trust, openness and impartiality. The labeling of Israeli products will not contribute to this end. We are being told the economic impact of such labeling should be small. And the step is supposedly not meant as a boycott. But seeing European shops label Jewish products brings back some very painful memories for many Israelis. And it stings that we are being singled out for special treatment. While we fully respect that the EU needs to apply its own acquis, this makes it very hard to escape the conclusion that this is a political step, with the distinctly political message that Israel is to be blamed and punished for the stagnation of the peace process. In Israel it is hard to explain how this could conceivably help kick-start peace talks. Nor does it appear to be a timely message. The Middle East is ablaze, with wars raging in Syria, Iraq, Libya and Yemen. These wars have become magnets for Daesh and Hezbollah Islamists, engaged in the random slaughter of civilians. We are facing an unprecedented refugee crisis. The Palestinian leadership remains hesitant, divided and unwilling to come to the table. Netanyahu has now repeatedly offered to hold direct talks with President Abbas on a two-states-for-two-peoples solution, without setting preconditions. He did so as recently as the U.N. General Assembly in New York. But what has happened? Instead of engaging with us directly, what we are getting from President Abbas are bold flag-waving statements and other unilateral shenanigans. What is needed is for the EU to help persuade Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas to agree to direct talks. Without such talks there can be no progress at all, not even a beginning. What is needed is for the EU to use its clout to help end the spate of attacks against Israeli citizens of the last few weeks, amongst others by getting Palestinian leaders to tone down their divisive rhetoric. What is needed is for the EU to do more to help disarm Gaza, whilst aiding the Palestinian Authority in regaining control over the Strip. While labeling legislation is a red herring, a painful distraction, the latter steps would enhance the prospects of success in tangible and practical ways. There is no doubt Europe is capable of making a significant contribution to the Middle East peace process. But we need to grasp the nettle, not start another smoke and mirrors game. A stabbing attack by a 16-year-old masked female Arab terrorist was prevented on Thursday evening by alert Border Patrol officers at the Kalandiya Checkpoint in northern Jerusalem. The stabbing attempt comes after a female Arab terrorist stabbed a Jew in Gush Etzion Junction in Judea on Monday, wounding him lightly before trying to flee and being shot by IDF soldiers who wounded her critically. The terrorist was identified as 22-year-old Amal Fahri Takatka from Beit Fajjar to the south of Bethlehem. He was bishop of Myra, in Lycia (now part of Turkey) and died on December 6, 342. He has been venerated throughout the Church, especially since the 10th century. Because of his help to the poor he is the patron saint of pawnbrokers, whose insignia of three golden balls represent the three purses of gold he is said to have given secretly to a poor man who could not afford dowries for his three daughters.
THE great veneration with which this saint has been honored, both in the Greek and Latin churches for many ages, and the great number of altars and churches which have been everywhere erected in his memory, are proofs of his extraordinary sanctity, and of the glory which he enjoys with God. The emperor Justinian built a church in his honor at Constantinople, in the quarter called Blaquernae, about the year 430, and he was titular saint of four churches in Constantinople. All accounts agree that he was a native of Patara, in Lycia. We are told that in his infancy he observed the fasts of Wednesdays and Fridays, refusing to suck the breasts on those days, which were consecrated to fasting by the law of the church, as St. Clement of Alexandria mentions, and as bishop Potter proves, in his note upon that passage from the Apostolic Constitutions, and the canonical epistle of St. Peter, bishop of Alexandria, and martyr. Also St. Epiphanius and others testify the same. Happy are they who, from their infancy and innocent age, are inured to the exercises of devotion, penance, and perfect obedience.
St. Nicholas increased his fervor in these and all other virtues with his years, especially when he had devoted himself to a religious life in the monastery of holy Sion, near Myra, of which house he was made abbot by the archbishop, its founder. Charity in comforting and relieving the distressed, seemed his characteristic virtue. Among many other instances, it is related, that when three young virgins were exposed through distress to the danger of falling into vicious courses, he, for three successive nights, conveyed to them through the window a competent sum of money for a fortune for one of them, so that they were all portioned, and afterwards happily married. Lycia was a large ancient province of Asia, in which St. Paul had planted the faith. Myra, the capital, three miles from Patara, and from the sea, was an archiepiscopal see, founded by St. Nicander, of so great dignity, that, in later ages, thirty-six suffragan bishoprics were subject to it. This metropolitan church falling vacant, the holy abbot Nicholas was chosen archbishop, and in that exalted station became famous by his extraordinary piety and zeal, and an incredible number of Stupendous miracles. The Greek histories of his life agree, that he suffered imprisonment for the faith, end made a glorious confession in the latter part of the persecution raised by Dioclesian; and that he was present at the great council of Nicea, and there condemned Arianism. The silence of other authors make many justly suspect these circumstances.
The history of the translation of his relics places his death in 342. He died at Myra, and was buried in his own cathedral. Several churches were built in his honor, even in the West, long before the translation elation of his relics to Bari; and the manner in which Usuard mentions him in his Martyrology, almost three ages before, shows in how great veneration his name then was in the West. The history of the translation of his relics to Bari assures us, that no saint was more universally honored in all Christian nations than St. Nicholas.
The Muscovites, who received their account of him from the Greeks, seem to pay a greater veneration to his memory than to that of any other saint who lived since the times of the apostles. The relics of St. Nicholas were kept with great honor at Myra till they were translated into Italy. Certain merchants of Bari, a seaport in the kingdom of Naples, situated on the Adriatic Gulf, sailed in three ships to the coast of Lycia; and watching an opportunity when no Mahometans were near the place, went to the church in which the relics of St. Nicholas were kept, which stood in a desert place, three miles from the sea, and was guarded by a small community of monks. They broke open the marble coffin in which the sacred bones lay, and carried them off to their ships; the inhabitants, upon the alarm given, pursued them to the shore with horrible outcries, but the Europeans were got safe on board. They landed at Bali on the 9th of May, 1087, and the sacred treasure was deposited by the archbishop in the church of St. Stephen. On the first day, thirty persons were cured of various distempers, imploring the intercession of St. Nicholas, and from that time the tomb of St. Nicholas of Bari has been famous for pilgrimages.
The authentic history of this translation, written by John, et that time archdeacon of Bari, by order of the archbishop, is extant in Surius. The same account is confirmed by another history of this translation, drawn up at the same time by Nicephorus of Bari, also an eye-witness, commissioned by the magistrates of the city, quoted in manuscript by Baronius, and published by Falconius. By this history of Nicephorus, it appears that the Venetians having formed a design of carrying off the relics of St. Nicholas, certain merchants from Bari, who happened then to be at Antioch, prevented them. This enterprise could only be justified by the laws of a just war, joined with the apprehension of the sacrilegious impiety of the Muslims. Mention is made in a novella of the emperor Emmanuel, recorded by Balsamon, and all modern writers, of a fragrant unctuous matter which issues from the relics of St. Nicholas in his shrine at Bari, a large quantity of which was found in his sepulcher near Myra in Lycia, when his relics were brought thence.
St. Nicholas is esteemed a patron of children, because he was from his infancy a model of innocence and virtue, and to form that tender age to sincere piety was always his first care and delight. To impress on the minds of children perfect sentiments of devotion, religion, and all virtues, with an earnestness in all duties, is a task often as delicate as it is important. Instructions must be made sensible, and adapted by similes, parables, and examples, to the weakness of their capacities. Above all, they are to be enforced by the conduct of those with whom children converse. They learn their maxims, imbibe their spirit, and are molded upon their example. A child which sees those who are about him love their own ease, and ever seek what best pleases their senses; still more if he observes them to be choleric, peevish, vain, slothful, or impatient, will naturally cherish these passions, and yield up the government of himself to them, instead of learning by tractability, humility, meekness, and self-denial, to subdue and govern them. And so in all other points. Precepts and exhortations lose their force when contradicted by example; and while the infant sees every one study to please himself in every thing, in flat opposition to the rules of the gospel which he hears preached from their mouths, he seems tacitly persuaded that such a conduct is reconcilable with those very maxims which condemn it.
