The fortress was eventually destroyed by the Hasmonean Maccabees as they overthrew the Greek occupation. Excavations at the Givati Parking Lot dig site, located in the City of David national park, have been ongoing for a decade. The Elad Foundation manages the national park and funds the digs, which have revealed numerous finds that are on display to the public at the site. But regarding the location of Antiochus’s fortress, which is mentioned in the Book of the Maccabees and the writings of Josephus, despite numerous proposals raised in the last 100 years of archaeological research it has remained elusive. However, according to researchers, in recent months decisive evidence locating the fortress has been found in the form of a section of ancient wall that is estimated to be the base of a tower four meters (13 feet) wide and 20 meters (65 feet) long, replete with a glacis artificial slope. The glacis, built adjacent to the wall, is a defensive element made out of layers of dust, stone and pitch, and meant to keep away attackers. This slope reached as far as the Tyropoeon Valley that crossed the ancient city of Jerusalem, and served as an additional defense. Ballista rocks, bronze arrow heads and led slingstones were found at the site with the sign of the trident on them, the symbol of Antiochus Epiphanes’s rule, bearing testimony to the battles in which the Hasmoneans triumphed and routed the Greeks. Historical records indicate the fortress was manned by salaried Greek soldiers as well as Jewish Hellenists who betrayed their people, and further detail how the forces in the fortress caused great suffering to the Jewish residents of Jerusalem. However, in 141 BCE after a long siege to starve out the Greeks, Shimon the Hasmonean was able to conquer the fortress and force the Greeks into surrender. According to archaeologists Dr. Doron Ben-Ami, Yana Tchekhanovets and Salome Cohen, who are directing the excavation on behalf of the Israel Antiquities Authority (IAA), the new discovery gives a new understanding of the history. “This sensational discovery allows us for the first time to reconstruct the layout of the settlement in the city, on the eve of the Maccabean uprising in 167 BCE,” said the researchers. “The new archaeological finds indicate the establishment of a well-fortified stronghold that was constructed on the high bedrock cliff overlooking the steep slopes of the City of David hill.” “This stronghold controlled all means of approach to the Temple atop the Temple Mount, and cut the Temple off from the southern parts of the city. E’ un dato di fatto, confermato anche la settimana scorsa dalla Banca d’Italia, che ci sono moltissime imprese creditrici nei confronti delle P.A. che vanno in grave difficoltà di liquidità, ed a volte sono costrette a chiudere ed a portare i libri in tribunale, costrette all’affanno proprio dai cronici (ed inaccettabili) ritardi degli enti pubblici nell’onorare i propri debiti. “Il 27 ottobre 2015 Banca d’Italia ha diffuso un documento (Occasional Paper) sulla questione dei ritardi di pagamento delle Amministrazioni Pubbliche italiane. Lo studio conferma quanto evidenziato dall’Ance in numerose occasioni nell’ambito dei rapporti semestrali sulla situazione dei ritardi di pagamenti in Italia e nei lavori pubblici, nonché nel ruolo di Rapporteur alla Commissione Europea. Le difficoltà nei pagamenti in Italia e nel settore dei lavori pubblici rimangono un problema irrisolto, nonostante le numerose misure adottate dai Governi nel corso degli ultimi 2 anni”. Lo afferma il presidente di ANCE Lecce, Giampiero Rizzo, che continua “il documento diffuso dalla Banca d’Italia stima in nove miliardi i crediti vantati dalle imprese del settore delle costruzioni (in Puglia sono presuntivamente circa 650 milioni di euro, di cui 70/80 milioni relativi alla provincia di Lecce) ed indica, causa la continua elusione della tassatività dei termini di pagamento, un ritardo medio in Italia degli stessi in 110 giorni. Secondo l’Ance invece le imprese di costruzioni sono state pagate mediamente dopo 177 giorni nel primo semestre 2015 e di questo problema soffrono, soprattutto, le nostre piccole e medie imprese edili”. “Sconcerta – conclude il presidente Rizzo – che a tre anni dal recepimento della Direttiva Europea sui pagamenti nelle transazioni commerciali vi siano ancora le difficoltà a suo tempo segnalate dall’ANCE ed oggi fatte proprie dalla Banca d’Italia. Bisogna ipotizzare nell’immediato un provvedimento legislativo che preveda l’intervento sostitutivo da parte dello Stato nei casi d’inerzia da parte degli Enti debitori. Al contempo rivolgo cortese invito alle amministrazioni locali che hanno debiti maturati prima del 31 dicembre 2014 e hanno bisogno di liquidità, a presentare richiesta alla Cassa Depositi e Prestiti entro il 10 novembre per ottenere le risorse necessarie al pagamento dei crediti delle imprese”.

Through the MindoLife home platform, created by the Haifa start-up, one can run electrical appliances at minimal expense via a phone, thereby controlling electricity consumption from afar – even from outside the country. By accessing information on local weather conditions, a “smart home” can automatically adjust for changes and save up to 30% of electricity costs. One could also, for example, activate the water heater or air conditioner on the way home, so that the home is already comfortable upon arrival. The process involves integrating the home with existing ‘smart’ devices, such as TVs, iRobots and coffee machines by suing a simple application installed on a smartphone, which is completed secured and protected. The system is more efficient and less expensive than other solutions available on the market, making it accessible to broad sectors of society. The Start-Up Team. Rami Younes, one of the four co-founders of MindoLife, is a software engineer and graduate of the Technion. He is responsible for business management and hardware design. Within the framework of talks over a “compensation package” of military aid the U.S. is set to offer Israel in the wake of the Iran nuclear deal, Israel has reportedly asked to receive the stealth version of the F-15 fighter plane, the F-15SE Silent Eagle. this request by Israel was reported by a number of media outlets, including Flightglobal.com. Israeli officials declined to confirm the reports. The F-15SE was meant to be Boeing’s answer to Lockheed Martin’s F-35 stealth fighter plane, but Boeing has not yet found a buyer for it. The US House of Representatives unanimously passed a bipartisan resolution condemning anti-Israel incitement in the Palestinian Authority (PA) on Monday, JTA reports. Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (R-Fla.), chairwoman of the House Middle East and North Africa Subcommittee, and Rep. According to Von Goetze, the EU’s initiative to mark products originating in Judea and Samaria is merely a technical step. Israel is anticipating a decision by the EU in the next few days on guidelines for member states to begin labeling goods from Jewish businesses in Judea and Samaria to differentiate them from products made inside Israel’s 1949 armistice border. Deputy Foreign Minister Tzipi Hotovely said Tuesday at a press conference at the Barkan industrial Park in Judea and Samaria that the move to mark products from Jewish communities is part of a clear process of delegitimizing the State of Israel. “Whoever is trying to boycott certain regions of Israel is basically boycotting the state itself and creating delegitimization of the state,” she said. “When you boycott Judea and Samaria,” she added, “you eventually boycott Tel Aviv.” Meanwhile, Knesset Member Tzipi Livni (Zionist Camp) criticized the government’s conduct regarding the European Union’s initiative to mark products manufactured beyond the 1949 armistice line, telling Israel Radio that she opposes the European initiative, but the government does not know how to deal with this challenge. Israel Arrests Gaza Man for Diverting Building Materials to Hamas for Terrorism Purposes ] Israeli security forces arrested a Gaza businessman for supplying Hamas with building materials meant for the civilian rehabilitation of Gaza. In a joint operation, the Israel Police and the Shin Bet (Israel Security Agency) arrested Tamer Ahmed Muhammad Barim, 36, a resident of Bani Suheila in the Gaza Strip, on August 31 at the Erez Crossing. Barim subsequently admitted that in the context of his profession as a merchant, he transferred hundreds of tons of building materials, which had been earmarked for the rehabilitation and development of the Gaza Strip, directly to the Hamas terrorist organization. The transfer of the building materials to Hamas was carried out by circumventing the UN monitoring system that was designed to verify that the materials, which were financed by donor countries and other agencies, were transferred for the rehabilitation of the civilian infrastructures in the Gaza Strip. The foregoing is additional evidence of Hamas’s cynical exploitation of donated funds and materials that were designed for the rehabilitation and development of civilian infrastructures in the Gaza Strip, for terrorism. The security establishment views the event with utmost gravity and intends to continue its efforts to foil attempts to smuggle building materials for terrorist purposes and to deal with all those involved to the fullest extent of the law. Why is the EU Stigmatizing Israel? Seeing European shops label Jewish products awakens painful memories. By: David Walzer, Politico. Many Israelis — both on the right and left of the political spectrum — look in utter astonishment at EU plans to compel European importers and retailers to brand Israeli products from the settlements with newly minted, Israel-specific consumer labeling. And it seems these labels would apply only to Israel, not to other countries or territories embroiled in territorial disputes. It is a step that threatens to reshape our relations, and I fear not for the better. Europe is Israel’s main partner in trade and business. We are an ally for Europe in the Middle East, a region that now poses some very hard questions for Europe. Most importantly, we share the same humanist aspirations for our countries. This makes us part of the same family, and I hope this allows me to speak openly and honestly. Building on this kinship, recent months have seen a flourishing of diplomatic meetings between Israel and the EU. Before the summer, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu met High Representative Federica Mogherini in Jerusalem and once again in New York. Last month, the prime minister also hosted European Council President Donald Tusk in Jerusalem. To make progress, however, the closest form of cooperation is necessary, and this needs to be based on trust, openness and impartiality. The labeling of Israeli products will not contribute to this end. We are being told the economic impact of such labeling should be small. And the step is supposedly not meant as a boycott. But seeing European shops label Jewish products brings back some very painful memories for many Israelis. And it stings that we are being singled out for special treatment. While we fully respect that the EU needs to apply its own acquis, this makes it very hard to escape the conclusion that this is a political step, with the distinctly political message that Israel is to be blamed and punished for the stagnation of the peace process. In Israel it is hard to explain how this could conceivably help kick-start peace talks. Nor does it appear to be a timely message. The Middle East is ablaze, with wars raging in Syria, Iraq, Libya and Yemen. These wars have become magnets for Daesh and Hezbollah Islamists, engaged in the random slaughter of civilians. We are facing an unprecedented refugee crisis. Already, ISIL-affiliated terror cells are operating from within the Gaza Strip. There are other challenges the EU could help tackle. The Palestinian leadership remains hesitant, divided and unwilling to come to the table. Netanyahu has now repeatedly offered to hold direct talks with President Abbas on a two-states-for-two-peoples solution, without setting preconditions. He did so as recently as the U.N. General Assembly in New York. But what has happened? Instead of engaging with us directly, what we are getting from President Abbas are bold flag-waving statements and other unilateral shenanigans. What is needed is for the EU to help persuade Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas to agree to direct talks. Without such talks there can be no progress at all, not even a beginning. What is needed is for the EU to use its clout to help end the spate of attacks against Israeli citizens of the last few weeks, amongst others by getting Palestinian leaders to tone down their divisive rhetoric. What is needed is for the EU to do more to help disarm Gaza, whilst aiding the Palestinian Authority in regaining control over the Strip. While labeling legislation is a red herring, a painful distraction, the latter steps would enhance the prospects of success in tangible and practical ways. There is no doubt Europe is capable of making a significant contribution to the Middle East peace process. But we need to grasp the nettle, not start another smoke and mirrors game. The 16-year landmark was torn down however due to concern for Jews living in the area.
