Sottolineo anche il carattere internazionale che diede alla Chiesa, elevando alla porpora ben 56 principi della Chiesa. Ricordo pure i circa 200 tra Santi e Beati che Egli ha elevato agli onori degli Altari. E mi sia lecito, qui, sottolineare che aveva pure in animo di fare indire, Lui, il Concilio Vaticano II (non fu un’idea peregrina, quindi, di Papa Giovanni!) a ripresa del Vaticano I, interrotto troppo presto dalla guerra franco-tedesca del 1870. Ma il suo Pontificato, purtroppo, fu quasi tutto turbato dalla guerra mondiale e dalle persecuzioni contro la Chiesa, in Europa, in Asia e in Africa, dove durano tutt’ora. Quando ne uscì, era troppo invecchiato per affrontarlo da pari suo! Egli stesso lamentò che la sua voce, nei suoi ultimi anni, era soffocata dalla stampa, anche nelle cerchie cattoliche. un giorno anche ad alcuni visitatori, quando disse di non essere più sicuro che la sua autorità andasse più in là delle mura del suo ufficio! Comunque, il suo Pontificato fu segnato da Atti che valgono bene un Concilio S”, come la Definizione del dogma dell’Assunzione, come la Dichiarazione Solenne della Regalità Universale della SS. Vergine; come tutte le precisazioni di Dottrina cattolica sui punti più controversi del secolo. E la Storia dovrà riconoscere questo magistrale Magistero, eccezionale, che lo porterà ad essere proclamato « Dottore della Chiesa », oltre che « Santo ».
