L’arcivescovo di Karachi Joseph Coutts racconta a Milano all’Università statale la discriminazione a scuola, sul lavoro e nella vita di tutti i giorni che i cristiani subiscono «perché considerati infedeli»

«In Pakistan noi cristiani siamo discriminati in modo costante. Il problema è che i musulmani, anche se non lo dicono, ci vedono ancora come “dhimmi”, cioè i non musulmani, inferiori, che devono pagare una tassa allo Stato per essere protetti». Così descrive la condizione dei cristiani perseguitati in Pakistan il presidente della Conferenza episcopale Joseph Coutts (foto a fianco), che ieri ha partecipato all’Università Statale di Milano all’incontro organizzato da Acs-Italia “Libertà religiosa, testimonianza diretta della chiesa che soffre”, a cui ha preso parte anche il direttore di Tempi Luigi Amicone.

«IL NUOVO ISLAM SAUDITA». In Pakistan la libertà religiosa è formalmente garantita dalla Costituzione, ma dopo il governo del dittatore Zia ul-Haq e la guerra in Afghanistan «è nato un nuovo islam che predica e promuove il jihad contro i non musulmani – ha detto l’arcivescovo di Karachi – Questo fanatismo che incita terrorismo e attentati non c’era prima nel nostro paese, è arrivato dall’Arabia Saudita. Gli estremisti non vogliono la democrazia ma trasformare il Pakistan in uno Stato islamico».

L’ATTENTATO A PESHAWAR. Ecco perché due kamikaze si sono fatti esplodere il 22 settembre davanti alla chiesa di Peshawar, uccidendo oltre 100 persone: «Oggi i cristiani sono ritenuti infedeli. Quando gli Stati Uniti hanno attaccato l’Afghanistan dopo l’11 settembre, gli imam parlavano di una nuova crociata dei cristiani e oggi ci ritengono nemici dell’islam solo perché identificano l’America e l’Occidente con il cristianesimo».

«NON VENDICHIAMOCI CON LE ARMI». In un paese dove i musulmani sono il 95 per cento della popolazione, e i cristiani appena il 2 per cento, non tutti ci stanno a farsi bersagliare senza reagire: «Dopo l’attentato alla chiesa di Tutti i santi, molti giovani volevano imbracciare le armi e vendicarsi contro i musulmani – ha raccontato monsignor Coutts – Ho dovuto fermarli e spiegare loro che questo non è cristianesimo, perché il cristianesimo deve testimoniare l’amore di Dio».

DISCRIMINAZIONE A SCUOLA. L’arcivescovo ha parlato anche delle scuole statali, «dove i libri di testo dipingono in modo negativo i cristiani e li discriminano», e del lavoro «perché se sei cristiano è quasi impossibile ottenere una promozione». Ma ciò che più «ci fa soffrire» è la legge sulla blasfemia, «che dal 1978 al 2011 è già stata usata in 1.081 casi. Anche se ti cade il Corano dalle mani puoi essere incriminato, la legge viene abusata, come nel caso di Asia Bibi, e anche quando vieni assolto è molto facile che gli estremisti ti uccidano fuori dal tribunale. «LA SPERANZA CHE È IN NOI». «Da questo mio intervento potrà sembrare che in Pakistan è tutto buio, ma non è così – ha concluso Coutts. Noi abbiamo speranza e abbiamo la fortuna di non essere una chiesa nascosta, come quella in Iran e forse in Turchia. Possiamo gridare in strada il nostro dolore e protestare. Ci confortano soprattutto le parole di san Pietro, che diceva: “E se anche doveste soffrire per la giustizia, beati voi! Non vi sgomentate per paura di loro, né vi turbate, ma adorate il Signore, Cristo, nei vostri cuori, pronti sempre a rispondere a chiunque vi domandi ragione della speranza che è in voi”.
