Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammed Javad Zarif has acknowledged that…. if anyone notices the Islamic Republic it is because its leaders are or pretend to be anti-American. In other words, anti-Americanism upgrades a ramshackle and incompetent regime that is visibly incapable of running a kebab-shop let alone a modern developing society. Zarif says that without anti-Americanism we would, at best, “be something like Pakistan”. And, he adds, who cares about Pakistan?
“Our solution is clear. In response to the cost of economic sanctions imposed on us we have to impose costs on the other side so that this war is no longer one-sided…. We have a free hand in striking economic blows at the enemy. America’s allies in the region, that is to say Saudi Arabia and the Emirates, are heavily dependent on two things: oil and the glass towers they have built around the Persian Gulf and the Red Sea… We must absolutely, hit the vital vein of those two countries, that is to say their oil exports. And we can do this in the Indian Ocean and the Red Sea. Such an operation will, without a doubt, force Saudi and Emirati leaders to seek peace with Iran.” — Kayhan, the day before the sabotage of four ships in the UAE port of Fujairah.
It is not enough to be anti-American or even anti-Trump to be automatically classed on the side of the angels. It is possible to be anti-American and anti-Trump and yet be a thoroughly obnoxious oppressor of the people and warmonger.

One of the problems with a dispassionate discussion of matters related to Iran today is that the issue has become too ideological to allow rational, not to say clinical, examination. Taking part in a televised panel the other evening to discuss the “sabotage” of four ships in the UAE port of Fujairah, I noted that there was as yet no evidence to show who had been behind the operation. At the same time, I noted that a leading daily in Tehran had urged the launching of precisely such operations just a day before the Fujairah attack.
Needless to say, I was attacked on all sides. Some claimed that by suggesting there was no evidence regarding the authorship of the attack, I was trying to whitewash the mullahs. Others claimed that by reminding people that such an operation had been urged in the daily Kayhan, representing the views of “Supreme Guide” Ali Khamenei, meant that I wished to incriminate Tehran to please “American warmongers.”

Massimo Sacco detenuto per oltre un anno negli Emirati Arabi è intervenuto questa notte ai microfoni di Rai Radio2 nel corso del format “I Lunatici”
L’imprenditore è rientrato in Italia: “Ringrazio la vostra trasmissione che per prima ha acceso la luce sulla mia storia, e il mio avvocato, Stefania Franchini. I Lunatici di Rai Radio2 sono stati i primi a dar voce alle preoccupazioni della mia figlia. Hanno alzato il velo sulla mia storia. Dopo gli interventi di mia sorella a Rai Radio2 anche altri hanno cominciato a seguire il mio caso. Altrimenti sarei morto lì dentro. Peso 64 chili, ne pesavo 98. Per le torture ricevute ho un testicolo, il sinistro, grande come una mela. Mi hanno fatto delle scosse elettriche sul testicolo sinistro”.
Massimo Sacco ha ripercorso le tappe della sua storia: “Lavoravo nell’ambito delle ristrutturazioni. Facevo un ottimo lavoro per dei famosi brand italiani. Allestivo i negozi. Avevo tutta la manovalanza e le forniture dall’Italia. Una maledetta sera sono andato in un club di Dubai Marina. In sei anni non ho mai lasciato la mia compagna Monia. Quella volta, lei faceva il turno di notte, io ero reduce da quaranta giorni di lavoro consecutivo, ero molto stressato. Sono andato a prendere una birra e ho incontrato un altro italiano. Poi si è avvicinato un ragazzo di colore che ci ha offerto cocaina. L’altro italiano che era con me ha provato a portarsi a casa una ragazza conosciuta lì. Ci è andato a casa ma poi si è scoperto che lei era una spia dell’intelligence di Dubai. Le forze dell’ordine sono entrate a casa sua, e lui mi ha venduto. Ha detto che la cocaina gliela avevo venduta io. Mi sono arrivati a casa, mi hanno pistato come l’uva, senza un mandato, senza niente. Hanno portato via la mia compagna che era in camera da letto, completamente nuda. Volevano che io ammettessi di aver portato la cocaina dall’Italia. Ma non era vero. Da quel momento inizia il mio incubo”.
Massimo Sacco aggiunge: “Mi hanno tenuto due notti dentro una stanza di tre metri quadrati in cui c’erano dodici persone, con una coperta, una bottiglia d’acqua e la possibilità di andare al bagno una volta al giorno. Appena chiedevi qualcosa, ti riempivano di botte. Poi mi hanno trasferito, sono stato mesi senza vedere la luce del sole, chiamare in Italia costava 1.20 euro al minuto, in sette mesi e mezzo ho speso 14.000 euro. Sono stato truffato da un avvocato locale e poi il mio caso è stato trasferito ad Abu Dhabi. Mi volevano accusare di spaccio e traffico internazionale di cocaina. Mi hanno trattato come una bestia, picchiato, incatenato mani e piedi e spedito in un carcere federale messo in cella con terroristi ed assassini. C’erano 180 posti letto e in prigione c’erano 280 persone. Pensavo di diventare pazzo. Le torture? Una sera stavo pregando con altri ragazzi cristiani nigeriana. Siamo stati presi e portati fuori, hanno preso il rosario, sbattuto per terra, ci hanno sputato sopra e mi hanno detto che esiste solo Allah, il loro Dio. Io gli ho detto che si sarebbero dovuti vergognare, visto che a febbraio negli Emirati sarebbe venuto il Papa. Mi hanno preso, portato dentro una stanza, in tre persone, lì c’era un energumeno che ha arrotolato un asciugamano, l’ha passato sotto il lavandino, mi hanno spogliato e mi ha spaccato tre costole. Poi mi hanno tolto le mutande e mi hanno dato le scosse elettriche ai genitali. Per motivi religiosi, in pratica. Loro sapevano che io ero cattolico, cristiano. A Natale mi hanno vietato di chiamare a casa, mi hanno detto che a Natale io ero tenuto a non chiamare la mia famiglia, visto che quella era la nostra festa più importante a livello religioso. Ci hanno fatto richiamare il tre gennaio. Poi, dopo aver subito queste scosse elettriche, mi hanno preso, chiuso dentro un tubo, incatenato mani e piedi, e sotto c’era una fogna a cielo aperto. Mi facevano mangiare per terra, come i cani, solo con le mani. Io ho fatto una cazzata, non avrei dovuto farla, ma non meritavo di essere trattato così. Sono stato sempre corretto, ho fatto solo un errore”.
