Harriet è nata in Uganda, ha 25 anni e un buon curriculum. Ma poiché a Kampala non è riuscita a trovare lavoro per un anno, ha deciso di tentare la fortuna a Dubai, negli Emirati Arabi Uniti, dove 7,8 milioni di persone su 9,2 sono lavoratori stranieri. Una compagnia di assunzioni l’ha contattata per pulire gli aerei all’aeroporto internazionale di Dubai e lei ha accettato. Così è cominciato il suo incubo.
STATI SCHIAVISTI. La sua storia, insieme a quella di tante altre persone come lei ridotte a schiave nei paesi arabi, è raccontata nel libro di prossima uscita: Slave States. The practice of Kafala in the Gulf Arab Region (Stati schiavisti. La pratica della kafala nel Golfo arabo). Le storie sono state raccolte dal giornalista ugandese Yasin Kakande, che ha scritto per oltre dieci anni dal Medio Oriente.
PAGARE PER LAVORARE. Harriet ha firmato un contratto per due anni, a 800 dirham (192 euro) al mese, ma le prospettive di guadagno fin da subito si sono mostrate in salita. Infatti, in cambio del privilegio del lavoro, ha dovuto pagare un pizzo di 2.400 dirham, pari a tre mesi di salario. Dopo sei mesi, le braccia e il volto le si sono ricoperti di sfoghi e irritazioni a causa di un detergente, il Bacoban, dannoso per la pelle. Dopo essersi lamentata con i suoi superiori, è stata subito portata in ospedale e curata.
CURE A PAGAMENTO. Solo a fine mese ha scoperto che le cure erano a suo carico e così, su 800 dirham pattuiti, ne ha ricevuti solo 200. Harriet avrebbe voluto tornare all’ospedale nei mesi successivi, dal momento che le irritazioni peggioravano, ma il suo datore di lavoro l’ha avvisata che se avesse lavorato meno delle ore pattuite, sarebbero scattate delle penalità. Non poteva permetterselo.
VIETATO BERE. In generale, interrompere il lavoro era proibito: non ci si poteva fermare né per mangiare, né per bere un bicchiere d’acqua. Un collega della ragazza, proveniente dal Kenya, un giorno è svenuto al pomeriggio per il caldo dentro l’aeroplano: l’aria condizionata non funzionava e lui non aveva mai potuto fermarsi per bere dal mattino. Molti rubavano delle bottigliette d’acqua all’interno degli aeroplani, con il terrore di essere scoperti.
ABUSI SESSUALI. Ogni volta che si chinava a terra, uno dei superiori di Harriet si allungava su di lei toccandole il fondoschiena con le natiche o con le parti basse. Se si lamentava per quel trattamento, quelli rispondevano: «Scusami, è la posizione della banana». Tutte le sue colleghe venivano trattate allo stesso modo e chi denunciava ufficialmente un caso veniva «accusata di essere una prostituta».
COSTRETTE A PROSTITUIRSI. In effetti, molte sue colleghe finivano per prostituirsi perché non avevano altra scelta. Lo stipendio, già di per sé misero, a volte non bastava neanche per mangiare. Nei miserabili container o logori appartamenti in cui venivano alloggiate le lavoratrici era vietato cucinare. Così si era costretti a comprare il cibo fuori. La stessa cosa valeva per i vestiti: bisognava per forza recarsi alle lavatrici automatiche. Solo per pulire l’uniforme (ed era obbligatorio), bisognava pagare quattro dirham.
CUCINARE DI NASCOSTO. Per sopravvivere, era indispensabile violare le regole, facendosi da mangiare all’aperto. Ma di nascosto e a notte fonda, per timore di essere scoperti. Al di fuori del suo complesso, costruito per sole donne, era in realtà pieno di uomini che gridavano perché uscissero in strada. Molte donne lo facevano, non per fare conoscenza, ma per prostituirsi e raggranellare qualche soldo in più. Molte si rifiutavano e finivano per essere stuprate anche solo nel breve tragitto dagli appartamenti al ristorante.
KAFALA. Dopo neanche un anno, Harriet ha deciso di cambiare lavoro, inviando a diverse aziende il suo curriculum. Tutte le risposte dicevano la stessa cosa: abbiamo bisogno che il tuo datore di lavoro dia il consenso. Stupita, chiese all’ufficio risorse umane della sua impresa di che cosa si trattava. E quelli le risposero che non poteva cambiare lavoro fino alla scadenza del contratto e che se l’avesse fatto, sarebbe stata cacciata dal paese. Il sistema chiamato kafala prevede appunto che il datore di lavoro possa disporre a piacimento del dipendente.
«FELICE DI PIANGERE». Fortunatamente, Harriet è riuscita a convincerlo e ora è impiegata in un negozio di cosmetici di Dubai. Anche qui deve affrontare molte difficoltà, ma è nulla rispetto a prima. Parlando con l’autore del libro, ricorda il suo primo lavoro: «Considero ancora quei due anni passati a pulire gli aerei come la peggiore esperienza della mia vita». Harriet was born in Uganda, she is 25 and has a good resume. But since Kampala was unable to find work for a year, he decided to try his luck in Dubai, in the United Arab Emirates, where 7.8 million people out of 9.2 are foreign workers. A recruitment company contacted her to clean the planes at Dubai International Airport and she accepted. Thus began his nightmare.
SCHEDULE STATES. His story, along with that of many other people like her reduced to slaves in Arab countries, is told in the forthcoming book: Slave States. The stories were collected by Ugandan journalist Yasin Kakande, who wrote for over ten years from the Middle East.
PAY TO WORK. Harriet signed a contract for two years, at 800 dirhams (192 euros) a month, but the earnings prospects immediately showed themselves uphill. In fact, in exchange for the privilege of the job, he had to pay a price of 2,400 dirhams, equal to three months’ salary. After six months, her arms and face were covered with rashes and irritation due to a detergent called Bacoban, which is harmful to the skin. After complaining to her superiors, she was immediately taken to the hospital and treated.
PAYMENT CURES. Only at the end of the month did he find out that the treatment was at his expense and so, out of 800 agreed dirhams, he received only 200. Harriet wanted to return to the hospital in the following months, since the irritations got worse, but his employer work warned her that if she worked less than the agreed hours, penalties would be taken. He couldn’t afford it.
PROHIBITED FOR DRINKING. In general, interrupting work was forbidden: you could not stop to eat or drink a glass of water. A colleague of the girl, coming from Kenya, one day passed out in the afternoon due to the heat inside the airplane: the air conditioning did not work and he could never stop to drink from the morning. Many stole water bottles from airplanes, afraid of being discovered.
SEXUAL ABUSES. Each time he bent down to the ground, one of Harriet’s superiors stretched out on her, touching her lower back with her buttocks or lower parts. If he complained about that treatment, they replied: “Excuse me, it’s the position of the banana.” All her colleagues were treated equally and those who officially denounced a case were “accused of being a prostitute”.
BUILT TO PROSTITUTE. In fact, many of her colleagues ended up prostituting themselves because they had no other choice. The salary, which was already poor, sometimes was not even enough to eat. In the miserable containers or worn-out apartments where women workers were housed it was forbidden to cook. So you were forced to buy food out. The same was true of clothes: you had to go to the automatic washing machines. Only to clean the uniform (and it was mandatory), four dirhams had to be paid.
COOKING OF HIDDEN. In order to survive, it was essential to break the rules by eating outdoors. But secretly and late at night, for fear of being discovered. Outside of its complex, built for women only, it was actually full of men shouting for them to go out into the street. Many women did it, not to make acquaintance, but to prostitute themselves and scrape together some extra money. Many refused and ended up being raped even in the short ride from the apartments to the restaurant.
Kafala. Not even a year later, Harriet decided to change jobs, sending her resume to several companies. All the answers said the same thing: we need your employer to give consent. Astonished, he asked the human resources office of his company what it was all about. And they replied that she could not change jobs until the contract expired and that if she did, she would be expelled from the country. The system called kafala provides that the employer can dispose of the employee at will.
«HAPPY OF PIANGERE». Fortunately, Harriet managed to convince him and is now employed at a Dubai cosmetics store. Here too he faces many difficulties, but it is nothing compared to before. Speaking with the author of the book, he recalls his first work: “I still consider those two years spent cleaning planes as the worst experience of my life”.
