As written here before: Syria has a very special place in my heart
not just because of my heritage or that I married a Syrian, but because
of the experiences that I shared living among the Syrian people on and

Recently there has
been some great news coming out of Syria. It is particularly good
because it is directly effects the safety of my family there. My wife’s
village is located just a few miles from where the terrorists
stronghold at Al-Hisin which lies within the Christian area of Wadi
al-Nasara (or the Valley of the Christian) in Syria. The Syrian Army
along with the local Christian militia just took control of Al-Hisin and
have now cleansed the surrounding villages of all of the Islamists.
Our family and the good people of the area celebrated their victory and a
big sigh of relief for the restored safety of all the real Syrians in
the area.

was once esteemed as the “key of the Christian lands” in the Middle
Ages, was stolen by the Muslims. The castle was eventually retaken by
the Syrian military, and here is a beautiful photo of the Lions of the

But,
there are those in this nation of Syria who, when they “seeth the wolf
coming,” do not “leaveth the sheep, and fleeth” (John 10:12), but sell
their garments and buy swords (Luke 22:36). These are the Lions of the
Canyon, a recently formed militia who “take up the cross” (Mark 10:21)
and “destroy the works of the devil.” (1 John 3:8) They fight guns, big
canons, and most importantly, zeal.

The Muslims want to outlaw the ringing of church bells, for the very
sound of them agitates the irascible demons. But the Christians put up
this beautiful photo with Arabic writing that translates to: “We Will
Continue To Sound Our Bells!”
Syria Church
As a
footnote; the Syrian Army showed the dead bodies and the IDs of the so
called ‘rebels’ and sure enough most were not Syrians but Islamists from
other countries. As noted before in ‘Syria’s Bashar Assad – An
American Ally’, Assad and the Syrian Army are the g0od guys who are
fighting against the same Islamic scumbags that our soldiers fight in
Iraq and Afghanistan and the same ‘rebels’ who flew planes into our
building on 9/11. The reason Assad has been able to hold on for 3
years and is overcoming the Islamic invasion, aka ‘Arabic Spring’, is
because the people of Syria are behind him. UN-reported by the
shameful Western media, Assad runs a secular government that protects
the Christians and the Jews that live in Syria. Also since Assad took
control after his father, the Syrian people have enjoyed freedoms and a
bustling economy like never before. (Too bad we can’t say the same under
our current President!) Of course the Islamists want all Jews and
Christians dead and a Sharia state so they want Assad out.

the Times of India: CAIRO: A health ministry official says 10 people
have been killed and 210 wounded in clashes around the country involving
opponents and backers of ousted President Mohammed Morsi, as well as
security forces.
Khaled el-Khatib, a health ministry official,
says four people were killed near the Republican Guard building in
Cairo, where troops opened fire on Morsi supporters marching on the
building Friday afternoon.
In Cairo, another person was killed in
clashes that erupted after nightfall when Islamistsattacked Morsi
opponents near Tahrir Square. Four others died in the northern Sinai
city of el-Arish, where Islamists stormed the main government building.
The 10th was killed in the southern city of Assiut. El-Khatib says 210
people nationwide have been wounded.
Enraged Islamists pushed back
against the toppling of President Mohammed Morsi, with tens of
thousands of his supporters marching in Cairo on Friday to demand the
reinstatement of Egypt’sfirst democratically elected leader. Soldiers
fired on protesters, crowds of Islamists descended on Morsi opponents in
stone-throwing and gun-firing clashes, and armored vehicles deployed on
bridges over the Nile in mayhem that left at least six dead.
In a
dramatic appearance – his first since Morsi’s ouster – the supreme
leader of the Muslim Brotherhood defiantly vowed the president would
return. “God make Morsi victorious and bring him back to the palace,”
Mohammed Badie proclaimed from a stage before a crowd of cheering
supporters at a Cairo mosque. “We are his soldiers we defend him with
our lives.”
Badie addressed the military, saying it was a matter
of honor for it to abide by its pledge of loyalty to the president, in
what appeared to be an attempt to pull it away from its leadership that
removed Morsi. “Your leader is Morsi … Return to the people of Egypt,”
he said. “Your bullets are not to be fired on your sons and your own
people.”
After nightfall, moments after Badie’s speech, a large
crowed of Islamists surged across 6th October Bridge over the Nile
toward Tahrir Square, where a giant crowd of Morsi’s opponents had been
massed all day. Battles broke out there at near the neighboring state TV
building with gunfire and stone throwing.
A fire burned on the
bridge as Islamists sporting makeshift shields and wearing helmets they
had brought in preparation traded stones with their opponents. “They are
firing at us, sons of dogs, where is the army,” one Morsi opponent
shouted, as another was brought to medics with his jeans soaked in blood
from wounds in his legs. Army troops deployed on another Nile bridge
leading into Tahrir, sealing it off with barbed wire and armored
vehicles.
In cities across the country, clashes erupted as Morsi
supporters marched on local government buildings, battling police or
Morsi opponents. At least six people were killed throughout the day –
four of them in Cairo, with at least 180 wounded, Health Ministry
official Khaled el-Khatib told The Associated Press.
“We are all
now afraid for Egypt,” Amr Moussa, a former Arab League chief who was a
major leader of the opposition to Morsi during his year in office, said
on Al-Hayat TV. “Egypt can’t afford to enter into violence or civil
war.”
But Islamists vowed to show by their numbers and the turmoil
that the military had made a mistake in ousting Morsi on Wednesday
night after millions of Egyptians poured into streets around the country
for four days this week demanding the Islamist president go in the
biggest rallies the country has seen.
Badie’s speech injected a
new vehemence into Morsi’s supporters, and the eruption of clashes at
multiple locations soon afterward suggested a coordinated counter-push
against those behind his ouster.
“The military got itself in a
trap by siding by one side. Now they see the masses in the streets and
now they realized that there are two peoples,” Hamada Nassar, a figure
from the hard-line former militant group, Gamaa Islamiya, told AP.
As
clashes raged Friday night, the military’s spokesman warned against
“any provocation or contact with groups of peaceful protests, and those
who transgress that will be dealt with complete determination according
to the law.”
The day’s turmoil began in the afternoon when army
troops opened fire as hundreds of Morsi supporters marched on the
Republican Guard building in Cairo, where Morsi was staying at the time
of his ouster before being taken into military custody at an unknown
location.
The crowd approached a barbed wire barrier where troops
were standing guard around the building. When one person hung a sign of
Morsi on the barrier, the troops tore it down and told the crowd to stay
back. A protester put up a second sign, and the soldiers opened fire,
according to an Associated Press photographer.
One protester was
killed, with a gaping, bleeding wound in the back of his head, while
others fell bloodied and wounded. Witnesses told to AP Television News
at the scene that men in plainclothes fired the lethal shots.
Protesters
pelted the line of troops with stones, and the soldiers responded with
volleys of tear gas. Many of those injured had the pockmark wounds
typical of birdshot. The BBC’s Middle East editor, Jeremy Bowen, was hit
by birdshot in the head as he covered the clashes. “Am fine,” he
reported in a tweet.
Three hours later, Badie – who security
officials had previously said was taken into custody soon after Morsi’s
removal – made his appearance before tens of thousands of Islamists
massed at Rabia al-Adawiya Mosque, not far from the Republican Guard
building.
Morsi “is my president and your president and the
president of all Egyptians,” Badie proclaimed, thrusting his arms in the
air, as a military helicopter circled low overhead.
The
grey-haired Badie, the group’s “general guide,” is a revered figure
among the Brotherhood’s followers, who swear an oath of absolute
obedience to him – to “hear and obey.”
The circumstances of his
appearance were a mystery, however. Security officials had said Badie
was taken into custody Wednesday night from a villa on the Mediterranean
coast and flown to Cairo, part of a sweep that netted at least five
other senior Brotherhood figures and put around 200 more on wanted
lists.
Just before Badie’s appearance, the Brotherhood’s political
party said on its webpage that he had “been released.” But on stage,
Badie denied he was ever arrested. There was no immediate explanation by
security officials for the circumstances of his detention and release.
Authorities
also announced the release of Saad Katatni, head of the Brotherhood’s
political arm the Freedom and Justice Party, as well as one of Badie’s
deputies, Rashad Bayoumi, pending further investigation.
Britain’s
Foreign Secretary William Hague said he was “very concerned” by the
reports of violence. In a Twitter message, he wrote: “Hope calm heads
will prevail, vital to avoid escalation.”
Fears have been high
over a major Islamist backlash to the military’s move. The Brotherhood
has said it will not work with the new military-backed leadership. Morsi
supporters say the military has wrecked Egypt’s democracy by carrying
out a coup against an elected president. They accuse Mubarak loyalists
and liberal and secular opposition parties of turning to the army for
help because they lost at the polls to Islamists. Many supporters have
equally seen it as a conspiracy against Islam. Extremist Islamist groups
that gained considerable freedom to operate during Morsi’s year in
office have already vowed violence in retaliation. The first major
Islamic militant attack came before dawn Friday in the tumultuous Sinai
Peninsula, killing at least one soldier. Masked assailants launched a
coordinated attack with rockets, rocket-propelled grenades and
anti-aircraft guns on the airport in the northern Sinai city of
el-Arish, where military aircraft are located, as well as a security
forces camp in Rafah on the border with Gaza and five other military and
police posts, sparking nearly four hours of clashes. One of military’s
top commanders, Gen. Ahmed Wasfi arrived at el-Arish on Friday to lead
operations there as the army declared a “war on terrorism” in Sinai. A
crowd of Morsi supporters tried to storm the governor’s office in the
city but were dispersed by security forces. The night of Morsi’s ouster,
jihadi groups held a rally in el-Arish attended by hundreds, vowing to
fight. “War council, war council,” a speaker shouted, according to
online video of the rally. “No peacefulness after today.” Islamic
militants hold a powerful sway in the lawless and chaotic northern
Sinai. They are heavily armed with weapons smuggled from Libya and have
links with militants in the neighboring Gaza Strip, run by Hamas. After
the attack, Egypt indefinitely closed its border crossing into Gaza,
sending 200 Palestinians back into the territory, said Gen. Sami
Metwali, director of Rafah passage. At the Rabia al-Adawiya rally
earlier in the day, the crowd filled much of a broad boulevard, vowing
to remain in place until Morsi is restored. The protesters railed
against what they called the return of the regime of autocrat Hosni
Mubarak, ousted in early 2011. “The old regime has come back … worse
than before,” said Ismail Abdel-Mohsen, an 18-year old student among the
crowds outside the Rabia al-Adawiya Mosque. He dismissed the new
interim head of state sworn in a day earlier, senior judge Adly Mansour,
as “the military puppet.””After sunset, President Morsi will be back in
the palace,” they chanted. “The people want God’s law. Islamic,
Islamic, whether the army likes it or not.” Many held copies of the
Quran in the air, and much of the crowd had the long beards of
ultraconservative men or encompassing black robes and veils worn by
women, leaving only the eyes visible. One protester shouted that the
sheik of Al-Azhar – Egypt’s top Muslim cleric who backed the military’s
move – was “an agent of the Christians” – reflecting a sentiment that
the Christian minority was behind Morsi’s ouster. In southern Egypt,
Islamists attacked the main church in the city of Qena on Friday. In the
town of Dabaiya near the city of Luxor, a mob torched houses of
Christians, sending dozens of Christians seeking shelter in a police
station. Clashes broke out Friday in at least two cities in the Nile
Delta between pro- and anti-Morsi demonstrators. The first steps for
creating a post-Morsi government were taken Thursday, when Mansour, the
67-year-old chief justice of the Supreme Constitutional Court, was sworn
in by fellow judges as interim president. A Cabinet of technocrats is
to be formed to run the country for an interim period until new
elections can be held – though officials have not said how long that
will be. In the meantime, the Islamist-written constitution has been
suspended. On Friday, Mansour dissolved the country’s interim parliament
– the upper house of the legislature, which was overwhelmingly
dominated by Islamists and Morsi allies. The Shura Council, which
normally does not legislate, held legislative powers under Morsi’s
presidency because the lower house had been dissolved. Mansour also
named the head of General Intelligence, Rafaat Shehata, as his security

short documentary covers FIREs case at Missouri State University, where
social work student Emily Brooker was threatened with expulsion after
she refused (as a matter of personal belief) to send a signed letter to
the Missouri state legislature in favor of homosexual foster parenting
and adoption. This violation resulted not only in a federal lawsuit
(which the school settled) but also in an official report that found
that a culture of intimidation rife in the schools School of Social
Work. For instance, many students and faculty stated a fear of voicing
differing opinions from the instructor or colleague, and bullying was
used by both students and faculty to characterize specific faculty. The
12-minute documentary features interviews with Brooker, faculty at MSU
involved in the case, and Missouri state legislator Jane Cunningham.

Mosul, lo Stato islamico “proibisce ai cristiani di andare a scuola”. Lo
denuncia ad AsiaNews l’arcivescovo, mons. Nona, che lancia il pericolo
di una “generazione non istruita”. Le scuole, trasformate in centri di
accoglienza, non possono ospitare le lezioni. La Chiesa lotta contro il
tempo per trovare alloggi, ma solo una minima parte degli istituti potrà
riprendere le attività. In città e nella piana di Ninive gli abitanti
sempre più ostili alle milizie islamiste, il 98% vuole “la loro
cacciata”. Ankawa (AsiaNews) – Per la prima volta nella loro storia, i
cristiani irakeni che da sempre “mantengono un grado elevato di
istruzione” nella regione, sono privati del diritto allo studio e non
potranno frequentare le scuole. Ciò rappresenta un ulteriore pericolo
per la sopravvivenza della minoranza, non solo in Iraq ma in tutto il
Medio oriente, perché è alto il rischio di vedere crescere “una
generazione non istruita” e questo è un “segnale estremamente negativo”.
A lanciare l’allarme è mons. Emil Shimoun Nona, arcivescovo caldeo di
Mosul, nel nord, secondo centro per importanza del Paese e prima città a
cadere nelle mani delle milizie dello Stato islamico. Interpellato da
AsiaNews, il prelato conferma che “al momento tanto fra le famiglie dei
profughi”, quanto “per i bambini che vivono nelle zone cristiane” è
impossibile iniziare l’anno scolastico. “Le circa 700 scuole sparse fra
Erbil, Ankawa e Zakkho – spiega – ospitano gli sfollati e sono piene. In
altre aree, non cristiane, le lezioni sono cominciate, ma non qui”. Il
problema è vivo anche nelle zone occupate dal Califfato islamico, dove è
cambiato il curriculum degli studi, improntato all’islam e al Corano.
Mons.
Nona è stato il primo a lanciare l’allarme sul pericolo posto
dall’avanzata degli islamisti dopo la conquista di Mosul, dove circa
500mila persone – cristiani e musulmani – sono fuggite a inizio giugno
per non doversi convertire all’islam e dove è stato fondato un Califfato
e imposto la sharia. In città e nelle zone della piana di Ninive sotto
il controllo dello Stato islamico le scuole hanno aperto i battenti.
Tuttavia, dietro direttiva dei loro leader il curriculum è cambiato: al
bando la storia, la geografia e la letteratura; si studia l’arabo e la
religione musulmana, vietato parlare di Repubblica d’Iraq o della Siria,
perché esiste solo il Califfato.
Un insegnante delle elementari
di Mosul di matematica e arabo afferma che “siamo nel 2014, ma sembra di
essere tornati indietro di 14 secoli”. Il 95% dei 2.450 istituti della
zona – Mosul e piana di Ninive – sono nelle mani degli islamisti, che
vietano classi miste e hanno chiuso la facoltà di Legge, perché “il
diritto convenzionale non è più in vigore”. Norme rigide, imposte con
una forza, che creano sempre maggiore insofferenza fra la popolazione.
Se in un primo momento la gente li considerava liberatori verso un
governo centrale (dell’ex premier sciita al Maliki) visto come
oppressore, oggi il 98% della gente – secondo quanto riferisce un
universitario di Mosul – “vorrebbe vederli cacciati al più presto”.
L’arcivescovo di Mosul, anch’egli rifugiato ad Ankawa, nel Kurdistan
irakeno, non può confermare in prima persona questo cambio radicale di
atteggiamento verso lo Stato islamico e lo stravolgimento del curriculum
scolastico a opera dei miliziani; egli aggiunge però di “aver sentito
queste voci” e vi sono buone probabilità che “siano vere”. In città vi
sono ancora alcuni cristiani, ma “sono pochissimi”, vivono “isolati” e
“sono in pericolo” perché “può succedere loro di tutto”. Mons. Nona
chiede di pregare perché la situazione col tempo “diventa sempre più
drammatica”, in particolare con l’arrivo dell’inverno; anche
l’interruzione del percorso di studi per i giovani cristiani rappresenta
un grave problema, perché blocca di fatto lo sviluppo di una intera
generazione di cristiani irakeni, che in passato si sono sempre distinti
per il loro livello culturale e il grado di scolarizzazione. “È un
elemento negativissimo” sottolinea il prelato, e “molto pericoloso”.
Nella storia della comunità l’educazione ha sempre rappresentato un
tassello “importante per noi”, commenta l’arcivescovo di Mosul, e come
Chiesa “stiamo cerando di affittare il maggior numero di case possibili”
per liberare le scuole e consentire la ripresa delle lezioni. Tuttavia,
l’operazione è “molto lenta, perché non è sempre possibile trovare case
o alloggi disponibili”. In chiusura, egli vuole però lanciare un
piccolo messaggio di speranza: in questi giorni “abbiamo preso in
affitto un palazzo con 56 appartamenti – racconta – che potrà accogliere
tutte le famiglie che, in questo momento, si trovano ospitate in una
scuola di Ankawa”. Una sola su 11, aggiunge, mentre l’obiettivo è

RUSSIA – UCRAINA. La sfida dell’inverno nel conflitto russo-ucraino. di
Vladimir Rozanskij. Le sanzioni europee e degli Stati Uniti e le
contro-sanzioni russe portano danni all’economia degli uni e degli
altri. La penuria di gas in Ucraina e nelle zone filo-russe metterà alla
prova i sussulti ideologici. I segni della fine della globalizzazione,
con la crescita dei localismi, il rischio di tramonto per l’occidente, i
fondamentalismi religiosi. Mosca (AsiaNews) – Dopo un’estate anomala e
climaticamente tormentata, un nuovo fattore sta per abbattersi sul
complicato confronto russo-ucraino: il freddo che inizierà tra poco. Tra
sanzioni e contro-sanzioni, in attesa di capire chi verrà maggiormente
colpito dal punto di vista economico e politico, la popolazione di
entrambi i Paesi si sta interrogando con preoccupazione sulle strategie
per affrontare l’inverno. Se in Ucraina il tempo sarà clemente, per
ancora un mese ci si potrà limitare a qualche indumento o coperta di
lana, ma prima o poi bisognerà accendere il riscaldamento, e ogni fiamma
di ardente patriottismo rischierà di spegnersi, come una candela
consunta. Del resto, anche la famosa Rivoluzione d’Ottobre iniziò a
febbraio con i moti di piazza, si trastullò d’estate con il Governo
Provvisorio, e si consumò con le prime nevicate, nell’assalto al Palazzo
d’Inverno.
Di certo i primi a congelare saranno i “separatisti”
delle zone occupate, e la popolazione in esse dislocata. A nulla
potranno le carovane di “aiuti umanitari” provenienti da Mosca, e
tantomeno i mezzi pesanti e le truppe che li seguono in scia. Tutto il
resto dell’Ucraina – a prescindere dagli esiti degli scontri a Lugansk e
Donetsk – sa bene che il gas per i caloriferi arriverà con il
contagocce – nella migliore delle ipotesi per qualche ora al giorno – e
bisognerà stabilire orari ferrei per l’entrata e l’uscita da casa. Nella
stessa Russia si stanno già sigillando le finestre contro gli spifferi,
sperando di trattenere fino a primavera quel poco di tepore lasciato da
un’estate ingrata. E tutto questo nella speranza che la “guerra delle
sanzioni” non vada oltre i limiti attuali, per evitare di dover
razionare anche i generi di prima necessità. Anche l’Europa occidentale a
sua volta teme, pur con meno apprensione, di vedersi ridotte le risorse
energetiche, in tempi tutt’altro che facili per le famiglie di tutto il
continente. Insomma, la vera crisi deve ancora iniziare. I
combattimenti nei territori orientali dell’Ucraina possono alla fine
risolversi con forme più o meno permanenti di compromesso, ma nessuno si
illude che tutto possa tornare come prima. Il vero effetto del
conflitto, drammatico ed evidente, è la fine delle speranze di
integrazione tra l’Oriente e l’Occidente, dell’Europa e del mondo. Gli
economisti di tutti i Paesi, a parte le facili Cassandre che
pronosticano scenari apocalittici, sono caduti da tempo nel più assoluto
smarrimento: il mercato globale, il salvifico libero scambio, in nome
del quale è nata la rivoluzione del Majdan, è di fatto bloccato e
impotente, e non si vedono facili sbocchi. La Russia è tentata
dall’isolamento politico, puntando tutto sul proprio orgoglio e la
propria elefantiasi, organizzando un programma autarchico nella
produzione di beni per il consumo interno, e aprendo in Asia i propri
sbocchi commerciali. L’Europa a trazione tedesca si barcamena, tra il
timore delle perdite dovute alle contro-sanzioni russe e le blande
promesse americane di compensazione energetica, condizionate a un
maggiore impegno militare dei renitenti europei, divenuti la razza meno
bellicosa del pianeta. Gli Stati Uniti sono scossi dalla continua
perdita di prestigio e controllo geopolitico, e l’indeciso Obama è
sempre più pressato dai “falchi” interni ed esterni al suo partito e
all’intero establishment, compresi gli ultra-liberali dei Tea Parties,
che vogliono un’America indipendente da qualunque condizionamento
militare ed economico. Le tigri asiatiche attendono pazientemente i
cadaveri sulla riva del fiume, in attesa del loro momento. Tutti parlano
del futuro dominio cinese, ma potrebbe anch’esso rivelarsi una chimera.
Il punto è che la globalizzazione, trionfo finale del capitalismo
storico su ogni forma di socialismo, porta in sé una clamorosa
contraddizione. Il capitale ha bisogno del conflitto, della concorrenza e
della contrapposizione. Il conflitto non è più quello hegeliano e
marxiano, tra padroni e servi, perché nel terzo millennio tutti sono
ormai padroni di qualcosa, e servi di tutto. Si scontrano interessi
compositi e complessi, spesso trasversali. La concorrenza non si basa
più sull’intraprendenza e la pubblicità, ma sulla continua
de-localizzazione e ristrutturazione, creando agglomerati di forze
economiche spesso conniventi, più che impegnate a superarsi.
Le
contrapposizioni ideologiche e geografiche hanno lasciato il posto al
riflusso nel più retrivo localismo, che sembra addirittura riportare al
Medioevo: chi si ricorda a quando risale l’esistenza di una Scozia
indipendente, o della Catalogna o della stessa Ucraina, per limitarci
all’Europa? Non certo le popolazioni che insorgono o si appassionano a
una causa forse mai esistita, come la Padania dell’Italia settentrionale
o la Novorossija putiniana. Le contrapposizioni diventano folclore e
nostalgia, come il Califfato di Al-Baghdadi che rievoca i tempi del
Saladino, il nazionalismo magiaro di Viktor Orban, emulo ungherese di
Putin, o la politica neo-ottomana del Sultano Erdogan. Ai sogni di
restaurazione spesso si accompagnano ispirazioni religiose alquanto
distorte: l’Islam del terrore e l’Ortodossia omofoba sono spesso
affiancate da integralismi cattolici, evangelici, induisti e buddisti,
capaci di allearsi proprio all’interno delle reciproche guerre di
conquista, contro la modernità e contro le istituzioni. Lo stesso Putin
ha ammiratori in America e in Europa, dove molti lo considerano il nuovo
Costantino, unica diga al degrado morale dell’Occidente, o il nuovo
Alessandro Magno, lanciato alla conquista dell’Asia per salvare la
Grecia. Gli attentati delle Torri Gemelle sono ormai un ricordo lontano,
ma solo ora si svela il loro significato profetico: non era la tipica
guerra dei cattivi contro i buoni, ma l’inizio di una disgregazione
globale. La piccola Ucraina, vaso di coccio tra barili di latta, porta
al mondo un messaggio ancora più urgente ed esplicito: è arrivato il
tempo di scegliere con chi stare, perché tutti insieme non siamo capaci,
e da soli non si va da nessuna parte. È l’inizio di un mondo nuovo:
certo non del Paradiso in terra, ma non è detto che debba essere per
forza un Inferno; purché gli uomini non dimentichino che c’è un Dio che
giudica, e che offre a tutti una via di salvezza. Arriveremo, infine,
alla primavera.
