FFI: la CEI scrive ai vescovi…
FFI(di Marco Tosatti su La stampa) Continua la saga dei Frati Francescani dell’Immacolata, la Congregazione commissariata e il cui caso non sembra ancora trovare né una spiegazione chiara (sulle motivazioni del commissariamento) né sugli sbocchi eventuali, cioè dell’apertura di un nuovo Capitolo in cui i frati facciano le loro scelte.
Nei giorni scorsi abbiamo riportato della presenza ad Assisi, all’Assemblea dei vescovi italiani, di padre Fidenzio Volpi, il Commissario.
Ora ci giunge notizia che il Segretario Generale della CEI, mons. Galantino, avrebbe inviato una lettera a tutti i vescovi italiani, ordinari di diocesi, chiedendo che a fronte di una richiesta di incardinamento nella loro diocesi da parte di un religioso dell’FFI che voglia uscire dall’ordine si mettano in contatto con il Commissario.
Un sito che crediamo sia vicino al Commissario e alla nuova gestione dei FFI, impersonata dal segretario e portavoce, padre Alfonso Bruno, spiega così la situazione, attribuendo intenzioni e perplessità a terzi, in un sostanziale “processo alle intenzioni” che getta qualche luce sul clima spirituale in cui pare svolgersi il commissariamento.

“Un gruppo (25+25) di presbiteri ed ex studenti dei Frati Francescani dell’Immacolata cerca da mesi accoglienza presso qualche Diocesi. La richiesta sta suscitando riserve e perplessità nei pastori delle Chiese locali perché si è rivelata non conforme al naturale disegno di rimodellare la propria vocazione come prete secolare, ma stratagemma per sottrarsi intanto all’autorità della Congregazione per gli Istituti di Vita Consacrata e dello stesso Commissario Apostolico in una fase di verifica canonica, dottrinale, disciplinare e finanziaria. Lo scopo finale delle richieste d’incardinazione in Diocesi appare chiaro: è la costituzione di una piattaforma di lancio, magari off shore come quella dell’Arcidiocesi di Lipa nelle Filippine o in diocesi di minoranza cattolica come in Inghilterra, per raggruppare chierici ordinati in sacris ed ex seminaristi FFI nella speranza di un ribaltone nell’attuale governo della Chiesa universale che può solo contare su miraggi mentali ai quali non si sottraggono polemisti come Antonio Socci nel suo recente e noiosissimo libro “Non è Francesco”.
Come già notato sia su questo spazio che da altri, il Commissariamento dei Francescani dell’Immacolata si contraddistingue sia per la vaghezza delle motivazioni in realtà non è mai stato detto per quali motivi concreti la Congregazione per i Religiosi abbia deciso il provvedimento, salvo un’accusa di deriva “criptolefebvrista” sia per il grado di conflittualità interna che ha provocato, e la severità della reazione, di cui questo ultimo episodio è un’ulteriore conferma.
Osservando la questione da un punto di vista laico e civile, non è facile capire perché un religioso che non si sente più di continuare all’interno di una congregazione debba essere quasi costretto a rimanere, o ad abbandonare totalmente il suo cammino spirituale, invece di rimodellare in una diocesi la sua vita, in un momento in cui le vocazioni, fra l’altro, sono scarse.

bertinotti pannella(di Antonio Socci su Libero del 16-11-2014) Insieme a Fausto Bertinotti e a Eugenio Scalfari è Marco Pannella il più elettrizzato fan di papa Bergoglio (“viva il Papa!”, “noi radicali lo amiamo molto”, “vorrei diventare un cittadino del Vaticano”).
Una “stupefacente” conversione all'”oppio dei popoli”, la religione, come ultimo approdo consigliabile in vecchiaia, perché non si sa mai di là si potrebbe anche trovare la sorpresa di Dio?
No. Non c’è traccia di ritorno alla Chiesa cattolica, né di pentimento, né di cambiamento di vita, in questo colpo di fulmine che ha investito il leader di Rifondazione comunista e i due simboli dell’anticlericalismo, del laicismo e della scristianizzazione dell’Italia.
Anzi. C’è l’esatto contrario. C’è da parte loro la sensazione di un trionfo inaudito della cultura radicale e laicista dopo la società italiana addirittura nella Chiesa.
E da parte di Bertinotti c’è l’entusiasmo per un papa che si pone come nuovo leader rivoluzionario e noglobal del mondo.
Ma è proprio così? Non sarà che Scalfari e Pannella sono semplicemente gratificati dalle telefonate e dai colloqui, visto il loro Ego da sempre arroventato?
E Bertinotti non avrà equivocato l’invito alla “lotta” fatto da Bergoglio al Leoncavallo e compagni?
Ricordo che di intellettuali, giornalisti o politici rimasti folgorati dai papi ce ne sono state molte anche in precedenza. In particolare per il carismatico Giovanni Paolo II e per il sapiente Benedetto XVI.
In quei casi però si trattava di veri e propri ritorni alla fede cattolica o di “conversioni” culturali che inducevano ad aderire almeno all’insegnamento culturale ed etico della Chiesa.
Invece, ha spiegato Sandro Magister, la popolarità di Francesco “non provoca ondate di convertiti. Anzi, con lui c’è un certo compiacimento nella cultura estranea o ostile al cristianesimo”.
In che senso? “Nel vedere che il capo della Chiesa si sposta verso le loro posizioni, che sembra di comprendere e persino accettare”.
Quindi l’esultanza dei vari Scalfari, Pannella e Bertinotti non è quella di chi ha ritrovato la fede, ma di chi ritiene di aver “conquistato” perfino il Vaticano.
DICO E DISDICO
Eppure, si dirà, Bergoglio ieri ha parlato ai medici cattolici contro l’aborto e l’eutanasia. Dunque come può essere acclamato dai Pannella e dagli Scalfari? Non è la prova che han preso un abbaglio?
In realtà il discorso di ieri non raffredderà affatto il loro entusiasmo bergogliano.
Anzitutto perché gli interventi di Francesco su questi temi sono molto rari, mentre erano frequenti nei suoi predecessori in quanto volevano suonare l’allarme per un’umanità che secondo la Chiesa è in piena “emergenza umana”, avendo smarrito (come ripeteva Madre Teresa di Calcutta) perfino l’abc dell’umanità.
Bergoglio ha subito avvertito che non aderiva alla battaglia sui “principi non negoziabili” (la sua è stata una rottura pesante nel magistero) e ha giudicato addirittura “ossessionata” questa scelta del magistero precedente.
Ma per quale motivo i discorsi di papa Bergoglio sembrano così contraddittori fra di loro.
Nell’autunno del 2013 una nota intellettuale cattolica sudamericana, docente universitaria, Lucrecia Rego de Planas, che conosce bene Bergoglio e ha collaborato con lui, fece un ritratto dell’uomo dove fra l’altro scriveva:
“(Bergoglio) ama essere amato da tutti e piacere a tutti. In tal senso potrebbe un giorno fare un discorso in tv contro l’aborto e il giorno dopo, nello stesso show televisivo, benedire le femministe pro-aborto in Plaza de Mayo; potrebbe fare un discorso meraviglioso contro i massoni e, ore dopo, mangiare e brindare con loro al Rotary Club… questo è il Card. Bergoglio che ho conosciuto da vicino. Un giorno intento a chiacchierare animatamente con il vescovo Duarte Aguer sulla difesa della vita e della liturgia e lo stesso giorno, a cena, a chiacchierare sempre animatamente con Mons. Ysern e Mons. Rosa Chávez sulle comunità di base e i terribili ostacoli che rappresentano ‘gli insegnamenti dogmatici’ della Chiesa. Un giorno amico del Card. Cipriani e del Card. Rodríguez Maradiaga a parlare di etica aziendale e contro le ideologie del New Age e poco dopo amico di Casaldáliga e Boff a parlare di lotta di classe e della ‘ricchezza’ che le tecniche orientali potrebbero donare alla Chiesa”.
Dunque un vuoto di pensiero teologico e filosofico? Una sorta di peronismo pastorale che contiene tutto e il suo opposto? Il suo retroterra culturale è davvero misero (lui stesso lo chiama “pensiero incompleto”), ma la strategia pastorale c’è ed è molto evidente.
CARNEVALATE
L’incoerenza dei contenuti è una scelta politica che serve a perseguire uno scopo preciso. I fans lo acclamano: finalmente questo è un papa moderno e laico. In effetti la bussola strategica di questo pontificato sembra la “desacralizzazione”.
E’ questo che spiega oltre all’abbandono dei “principi non negoziabili” tante piccole e grandi scelte, apparentemente senza nesso logico fra loro.
Fin dalla prima apparizione sulla loggia di San Pietro, la sera del 13 marzo 2013, quando rifiutò la stola sacerdotale e la mozzetta rossa (simbolo del martirio di Pietro e della giurisdizione) definendole “carnevalate”.
Subito i media elogiarono la “desacralizzazione” del papato colta anche in altri segnali, come il “buonasera” anziché “sia lodato Gesù Cristo” e l’essersi definito quattro volte “vescovo di Roma” e mai papa.
Una desacralizzazione del papato (mentre iniziava la mitizzazione dell’uomo Bergoglio) proseguita poi con altre scelte piccole (come il rifiuto dell’appartamento pontificio) e più gravide di conseguenza (sebbene ambigue), come la frase “chi sono io per giudicare?”, la condanna del proselitismo cattolico e della cosiddetta “ingerenza spirituale” (cioè dell’influenza cristiana nel mondo).
E il Sinodo non è una clamorosa desacralizzazione della famiglia? E il non genuflettersi dinanzi al Tabernacolo o durante la consacrazione? E l’ammissione di tutti all’eucarestia già praticata a Buenos Aires?
E dire che per i cristiani non c’è nessuna “verità assoluta”?
E le affermazioni sul Bene e sul Male come opinioni soggettive fatte a Scalfari non “relativizzano” forse l’oggettività della morale?
E annunciare che “non esiste un Dio cattolico” non è un relativizzare la fede? E il discorso di Caserta?
E insinuare come ha fatto nell’omelia del 20 dicembre 2013 che la Madonna sotto la Croce “forse aveva voglia di dire: sono stata ingannata” perché le promesse messianiche le apparivano “bugie”?
Non è una desacralizzazione della figura della Madre di Dio? La dottrina cattolica ha sempre affermato che come si legge nel Catechismo “la sua fede non ha mai vacillato, Maria non ha cessato di credere ‘nell’adempimento’ della parola di Dio. Ecco perché la Chiesa venera in Maria la più pura realizzazione della fede”.
Si potrebbe continuare con le battute sarcastiche (e a volte sprezzanti) sui cristiani, su chi prega il rosario, sui preti in talare, sulle suore che digiunano. Con la prospettiva di desacralizzazione della liturgia e della vita claustrale.
E poi i luoghi: l’Imam chiamato a pregare in Vaticano (dove ha invocato Allah per la vittoria sui miscredenti), la Cappella Sistina concessa alla Porsche per un evento aziendale, il Leoncavallo (e altre gruppi marxisti) ricevuti e arringati dal Papa il 28 ottobre scorso (torneranno), Patty Smith chiamata al concerto di Natale in Vaticano. Manca solo Vladimir Luxuria a Tv2000 (rimandato). A quando una partita di basket in San Pietro?
NAUFRAGIO
C’è invece con Bergoglio una sacralizzazione dei temi sociali, tipici della sinistra. E’ per questo che la Chiesa sudamericana da decenni è allo sbando, è la più in crisi del pianeta: gli ultimi dati, appena diffusi, del “Pew Research Center”, confermano questo crollo verticale dell’appartenenza alla Chiesa cattolica in America latina.
Ora quella ricetta fallimentare viene applicata a tutta la Chiesa. E presto vedremo le stesse rovine. Effetto Bergoglio.

Armed jihadists of the so-called “Islamic State” took over Iraq’s largest Christian town, Qaraqosh, and nearby Christian settlements early Thursday, forcing thousands of Christians to flee to Kurdish-controlled areas. Statements of anguish and calls for intervention have been issued by Pope Francis and other Christian leaders. The US President Barack Obama has authorised two operations to prevent genocide in Iraq. One operation is targeted airstrikes to protect US personnel and the other is a humanitarian effort to help the thousands of displaced Iraqi civilians, mostly religious minorities, who have been forced out of their homes by the Islamic State, IS. In addition to Christians, tens of thousands of ethnic Yazidis have fled to the mountains outside Qaraqosh, where they are surrounded by the Sunni militants and exposed to temperatures well over 100 degrees Fahrenheit (38 Celsius) without access to water or other supplies. The United Nations’ children -relief agency, UNICEF, says at least 40 Yazidi children have died. As many as a quarter of Iraq’s remaining Christians are reported to be on the run, according to the BBC. Louis Sako, patriarch of the Chaldean Church in Iraq, told Agence France-Press the advancing Sunni militants have occupied churches, ripped down crosses and destroyed manuscripts. The Islamic State, which previously called itself the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria, IS or ISIS, also has captured Mosul Dam, Iraq’s largest, after driving off the Peshmerga defense forces of Kurdistan, the autonomous region of northern Iraq. Qaraqosh, a city of about 50,000 people in Iraq’s Nineveh Province, sits between Mosul, Iraq’s second-largest city, and Erbil, the capital of the Kurdish region, to the east. The Islamic State took over Mosul in July, and many of the city’s remaining Christians fled eastward to Qaraqosh, sometimes called the Christian capital of Iraq. Kurdish Peshmerga troops had been pushed back from several points surrounding Mosul during an IS offensive during the weekend, including the town of Sinjar and Zumar, west of Mosul. The BBC reported that the Peshmerga commander in Qaraqosh informed the archbishop late Wednesday that the Kurdish forces would withdraw. There were reports of mortars being fired into Christian towns near the front lines east of Mosul, and Qaraqosh fell during the early hours of Thursday. “I now know that the towns of Qaraqosh, Tal Kayf, Bartella and Karamlesh have been emptied of their original population and are now under the control of the militants,” Joseph Thomas, the Chaldean archbishop of Kirkuk and Sulaimaniyah, told AFP. Following the capture of Sinjar and Zumar during the weekend, tens of thousands of residents fled into the hills between the two cities. Many are Yazidi, a Kurdish group with links to Zoroastrianism, and whose beliefs are regarded by some Sunni Muslims as satanic. They have been stuck without food or water. “Many of the displaced are in immediate need of essential life-saving humanitarian items, including water, food, shelter and medicine,” said UN spokesman David Swanson. Archbishop Thomas called the situation a “catastrophe.” “Tens of thousands of terrified people are being displaced as we speak, it cannot be described,” Thomas told AFP. Chaldean Patriarch Louis Sako told AFP said the jihadist advance has touched off a frantic dash for Kurdistan. “There are 100,000 displaced Christians who have fled with nothing but their clothes, some of them on foot, to reach the Kurdistan region,” AFP quoted him as saying. “This is a humanitarian disaster. The churches are occupied, their crosses were taken down.”
“But fights started in Telkif,” she continued, “and we jumped out to escape but my husband stumbled and his leg broke in two more places.” The church members who heard this story told World Watch Monitor they were thankful the couple had made it to Erbil. “They were scared when they told their story, but they need others to listen otherwise they will remain traumatized.” Sources also report an increase in threatening behaviour, which is frightening Christians and creating a sense of instability. Before the recent Eid, members of IS sent messages to monasteries in the Nineveh Plain saying that “we will celebrate Eid” in your town. IS has turned St Michael’s monastery into a barn to keep animals. The fourth century building is near the River Tigris. A young family of five were attempting to flee Mosul when they were stripped of nearly all their possessions, including clothes for their children. The mother said: “They stole our car with everything I had brought for my children their clothes, a washing machine, food, medicine, jewellery for the girls. I hid my wedding ring in the diaper of my 10-month-old baby but they took my new phone. “My 80-year-old father in law got angry and demanded they return our things but they said to him: ‘Do not speak or we are going to hurt you’. ÄS they were taking our car I managed to grab two bags of the girls’ clothes and then we ran away.” The family have now relocated to Erbil and the mother, who is a graduate Chemist, will try to find work there. They will try to rent a house and place the children in schools, but she is questioning whether even Erbil is safe: “Do you think IS will enter Erbil? Is it safe here because people from Mosul are still afraid?” As well as valuable items, IS took IDs, marriage certificates and land and property registration documents as Christians were leaving Mosul. They tore up these documents. Sources have also revealed that IS had already stated that any property left empty will become the property of the IS armed group.

Price rises are foreshadowing economic collapse in Mosul. In July blocks of ice were selling at 10,000 Iraqi Dinars (8.5 USD or 5 British pounds at current rates), one litre of car fuel was 2,500 ID. It is feared the supply of goods will become even worse if routes through Kurdistan are cut off. Other services are suffering electricity is only on for two hours each day, water is not available across the city anymore and medicines are becoming scarce. Early July sources revealed a scam from estate agents in Baghdad. Christians were receiving letters containing a bullet and a demand saying “leave you crusaders”. The agents were exposed and arrested by Iraq’s Ministry of the Interior. They confessed to wanting to persuade Christians to sell property at a cut price so it could be bought cheap. The agents also confessed to supplying home-owners’ details to militants. World Watch Monitor has also been told that IS had informed Muslims living near the Holy Spirit Church, east of Mosul, to leave their homes because the church would be bombed. Families were told to leave their houses after Iftar (eating after a Muslim fast) for their own protection. The explosions raised the church building to the ground. Earlier in July IS had set fire to a room attached to the altar of ‘Noah’s Ark church’, as it was also known because it is designed to look like a ship. Bishop Faraj Rahho opened Holy Trinity Church in 2005 but he was killed in 2008 after a widely publicized kidnapping. When he was ordained Archbishop of Mosul in 2001 he had responsibility for 20,000 Catholics. Rahho had expressed unease at moves to incorporate Sharia law into the Iraqi constitution. He often led worship in difficult situations and had been threatened before by gunmen. One of the demands made by the kidnappers was that Iraqi Christians form a militia to fight US forces based in Iraq at the time. The Archbishop’s body was found in a shallow grave in March 2008. On 24 July, many of the Iraqi Christians who had already left Mosul marched in protest from their refugee camp in Ankawa to the UN base in Erbil. The demonstrators braved temperatures of 50 degrees centigrade to demand the UN help protect them against IS militants. Sahar Mansour, a Chaldean Catholic who fled Mosul in June, told the Catholic News Service that she had heard horrific accounts of violent forced conversions of Christians who were unable to flee Mosul because of ill health or disability. “I did not imagine that one day I would live like this, without human rights, drinking salty water out of wells, without electricity and a house, in this heat,” she said. Mansour and her family are among 3,500 Christian families encamped around Ankawa, on the outskirts of Erbil.

Un parlamentare iracheno e membro dell’antica religione yazidi scoppiò in lacrime all’inizio di questa settimana, come ha descritto il massacro di migliaia di sua gente all’inizio di questa settimana. Display straziante di MP Fiyan Dakheel di disperazione ha evidenziato i progressi allarmanti effettuate dal gruppo “Stato Islamico” (ex ISIS) nelle ultime settimane, e il silenzio schiacciante dei leader internazionali e degli organismi per i diritti umani. Un numero indeterminato di yazidi nel nord dell’Iraq – la maggior parte dei quali sono di etnia curda e la cui presenza è anteriore sia l’Islam e il Cristianesimo nella regione – sono stati uccisi da avanzare jihadisti. Più di 200.000 altre Yazidi sono stati costretti a fuggire in una campagna di pulizia etnica e, alcuni hanno accusato, tentativo di genocidio di una delle più antiche comunità irachene. Nel video, Dakheel si deduce che non meno di un “genocidio” è in fase di perpetua contro il suo popolo sotto la bandiera dell’Islam. “Parlo qui in nome dell’umanità! Prego salvaci! Salvaci!” gridò, poco prima di crollare dal dolore. Alcuni di 147.000 rifugiati hanno reso alle regioni curde controllata del nord iracheno, ma circa 50.000 sono rimasti bloccati in Monti Sinjar senza cibo, acqua o forniture mediche, dopo che le forze curde si ritirarono di fronte islamista avanza. Forze di Stato islamici hanno circondato il piede della montagna, tagliandoli fuori nel tentativo di farli morire di fame fuori. Come un risultato, decine potenzialmente centinaia, sono già morti di sete – soprattutto donne, bambini, anziani e deboli. E ‘solo l’ultimo episodio tragico nel marzo dello Stato islamico attraverso l’Iraq e la Siria. The fortress was eventually destroyed by the Hasmonean Maccabees as they overthrew the Greek occupation. Excavations at the Givati Parking Lot dig site, located in the City of David national park, have been ongoing for a decade. The Elad Foundation manages the national park and funds the digs, which have revealed numerous finds that are on display to the public at the site. But regarding the location of Antiochus’s fortress, which is mentioned in the Book of the Maccabees and the writings of Josephus, despite numerous proposals raised in the last 100 years of archaeological research it has remained elusive. However, according to researchers, in recent months decisive evidence locating the fortress has been found in the form of a section of ancient wall that is estimated to be the base of a tower four meters (13 feet) wide and 20 meters (65 feet) long, replete with a glacis artificial slope. The glacis, built adjacent to the wall, is a defensive element made out of layers of dust, stone and pitch, and meant to keep away attackers. This slope reached as far as the Tyropoeon Valley that crossed the ancient city of Jerusalem, and served as an additional defense. Ballista rocks, bronze arrow heads and led slingstones were found at the site with the sign of the trident on them, the symbol of Antiochus Epiphanes’s rule, bearing testimony to the battles in which the Hasmoneans triumphed and routed the Greeks. Historical records indicate the fortress was manned by salaried Greek soldiers as well as Jewish Hellenists who betrayed their people, and further detail how the forces in the fortress caused great suffering to the Jewish residents of Jerusalem. However, in 141 BCE after a long siege to starve out the Greeks, Shimon the Hasmonean was able to conquer the fortress and force the Greeks into surrender. According to archaeologists Dr. Doron Ben-Ami, Yana Tchekhanovets and Salome Cohen, who are directing the excavation on behalf of the Israel Antiquities Authority (IAA), the new discovery gives a new understanding of the history. “This sensational discovery allows us for the first time to reconstruct the layout of the settlement in the city, on the eve of the Maccabean uprising in 167 BCE,” said the researchers. “The new archaeological finds indicate the establishment of a well-fortified stronghold that was constructed on the high bedrock cliff overlooking the steep slopes of the City of David hill.” “This stronghold controlled all means of approach to the Temple atop the Temple Mount, and cut the Temple off from the southern parts of the city. Collaborating in a new start-up, Israeli Arab and Jewish security experts, using the latest technology, together have created the Smart Home app, enabling residents to monitor their homes from afar. The “smart home” is the latest in technology, and it was invented by a team of Israeli Arabs and security experts from Haifa. Through the MindoLife home platform, created by the Haifa start-up, one can run electrical appliances at minimal expense via a phone, thereby controlling electricity consumption from afar – even from outside the country. By accessing information on local weather conditions, a “smart home” can automatically adjust for changes and save up to 30% of electricity costs. One could also, for example, activate the water heater or air conditioner on the way home, so that the home is already comfortable upon arrival. The process involves integrating the home with existing ‘smart’ devices, such as TVs, iRobots and coffee machines by suing a simple application installed on a smartphone, which is completed secured and protected. Within the framework of talks over a “compensation package” of military aid the U.S. is set to offer Israel in the wake of the Iran nuclear deal, Israel has reportedly asked to receive the stealth version of the F-15 fighter plane, the F-15SE Silent Eagle. this request by Israel was reported by a number of media outlets, including Flightglobal.com. Israeli officials declined to confirm the reports. The F-15SE was meant to be Boeing’s answer to Lockheed Martin’s F-35 stealth fighter plane, but Boeing has not yet found a buyer for it. Israel has already ordered 33 F-35s and is set to receive its first two by the end of 2016. The US House of Representatives unanimously passed a bipartisan resolution condemning anti-Israel incitement in the Palestinian Authority (PA) on Monday, JTA reports. Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (R-Fla.), chairwoman of the House Middle East and North Africa Subcommittee, and Rep. According to Von Goetze, the EU’s initiative to mark products originating in Judea and Samaria is merely a technical step. Israel is anticipating a decision by the EU in the next few days on guidelines for member states to begin labeling goods from Jewish businesses in Judea and Samaria to differentiate them from products made inside Israel’s 1949 armistice border. Deputy Foreign Minister Tzipi Hotovely said Tuesday at a press conference at the Barkan industrial Park in Judea and Samaria that the move to mark products from Jewish communities is part of a clear process of delegitimizing the State of Israel. “Whoever is trying to boycott certain regions of Israel is basically boycotting the state itself and creating delegitimization of the state,” she said. “When you boycott Judea and Samaria,” she added, “you eventually boycott Tel Aviv.” Meanwhile, Knesset Member Tzipi Livni (Zionist Camp) criticized the government’s conduct regarding the European Union’s initiative to mark products manufactured beyond the 1949 armistice line, telling Israel Radio that she opposes the European initiative, but the government does not know how to deal with this challenge. Israel Arrests Gaza Man for Diverting Building Materials to Hamas for Terrorism Purposes ] Israeli security forces arrested a Gaza businessman for supplying Hamas with building materials meant for the civilian rehabilitation of Gaza. In a joint operation, the Israel Police and the Shin Bet (Israel Security Agency) arrested Tamer Ahmed Muhammad Barim, 36, a resident of Bani Suheila in the Gaza Strip, on August 31 at the Erez Crossing. Barim subsequently admitted that in the context of his profession as a merchant, he transferred hundreds of tons of building materials, which had been earmarked for the rehabilitation and development of the Gaza Strip, directly to the Hamas terrorist organization. The transfer of the building materials to Hamas was carried out by circumventing the UN monitoring system that was designed to verify that the materials, which were financed by donor countries and other agencies, were transferred for the rehabilitation of the civilian infrastructures in the Gaza Strip. The foregoing is additional evidence of Hamas’s cynical exploitation of donated funds and materials that were designed for the rehabilitation and development of civilian infrastructures in the Gaza Strip, for terrorism. The security establishment views the event with utmost gravity and intends to continue its efforts to foil attempts to smuggle building materials for terrorist purposes and to deal with all those involved to the fullest extent of the law. Why is the EU Stigmatizing Israel? Seeing European shops label Jewish products awakens painful memories. By: David Walzer, Politico. Many Israelis — both on the right and left of the political spectrum — look in utter astonishment at EU plans to compel European importers and retailers to brand Israeli products from the settlements with newly minted, Israel-specific consumer labeling. And it seems these labels would apply only to Israel, not to other countries or territories embroiled in territorial disputes. It is a step that threatens to reshape our relations, and I fear not for the better. Europe is Israel’s main partner in trade and business. We are an ally for Europe in the Middle East, a region that now poses some very hard questions for Europe. Most importantly, we share the same humanist aspirations for our countries. This makes us part of the same family, and I hope this allows me to speak openly and honestly. Building on this kinship, recent months have seen a flourishing of diplomatic meetings between Israel and the EU. Before the summer, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu met High Representative Federica Mogherini in Jerusalem and once again in New York. Last month, the prime minister also hosted European Council President Donald Tusk in Jerusalem. The labeling of Israeli products will not contribute to this end. We are being told the economic impact of such labeling should be small. And the step is supposedly not meant as a boycott. But seeing European shops label Jewish products brings back some very painful memories for many Israelis. And it stings that we are being singled out for special treatment. While we fully respect that the EU needs to apply its own acquis, this makes it very hard to escape the conclusion that this is a political step, with the distinctly political message that Israel is to be blamed and punished for the stagnation of the peace process. In Israel it is hard to explain how this could conceivably help kick-start peace talks. Nor does it appear to be a timely message. The Middle East is ablaze, with wars raging in Syria, Iraq, Libya and Yemen. These wars have become magnets for Daesh and Hezbollah Islamists, engaged in the random slaughter of civilians. We are facing an unprecedented refugee crisis. What we hope to receive from our partners abroad is some help in finding these. Security is and will always remain our Gold Standard. The problem we now face is that in a region awash with blood and rife with sectarianism, this is more difficult to achieve. Already, ISIL-affiliated terror cells are operating from within the Gaza Strip. There are other challenges the EU could help tackle. The Palestinian leadership remains hesitant, divided and unwilling to come to the table. Netanyahu has now repeatedly offered to hold direct talks with President Abbas on a two-states-for-two-peoples solution, without setting preconditions. He did so as recently as the U.N. General Assembly in New York. But what has happened? Instead of engaging with us directly, what we are getting from President Abbas are bold flag-waving statements and other unilateral shenanigans. What is needed is for the EU to help persuade Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas to agree to direct talks. Without such talks there can be no progress at all, not even a beginning. What is needed is for the EU to use its clout to help end the spate of attacks against Israeli citizens of the last few weeks, amongst others by getting Palestinian leaders to tone down their divisive rhetoric. What is needed is for the EU to do more to help disarm Gaza, whilst aiding the Palestinian Authority in regaining control over the Strip. While labeling legislation is a red herring, a painful distraction, the latter steps would enhance the prospects of success in tangible and practical ways. There is no doubt Europe is capable of making a significant contribution to the Middle East peace process. But we need to grasp the nettle, not start another smoke and mirrors game. Questa settimana per un giorno anche i manichini hanno impugnato coltelli. Con il modico importo di settanta shekel (17 euro) i giovani di Gaza possono adesso fare un figurone comprandosi pantaloni alla moda: sono gli ‘Hitler jeans’, lanciati sul mercato da un paio di intraprendenti e spregiudicati commercianti di abiti che attraversano una fase di espansione delle proprie attività. Al negozio ‘Hitler’ aperto tre anni fa nel rione di Sheikh Radwan hanno adesso affiancato, in pieno centro di Gaza City, anche ‘Hitler-2’. Hanno pure tentato di cavalcare a loro modo l’ondata di emozione che fa fremere i giovani di Gaza di fronte alla ‘intifada dei coltelli’ che da ottobre investe la Cisgiordania ed Israele. Questa settimana per un giorno anche i loro manichini, in un gesto di solidarietà politica, hanno impugnato coltelli dalle lunghe lame. La foto ha però avuto risonanza internazionale e ai gestori di ‘Hitler-2’ è stato vivamente consigliato di rimuovere i coltelli.
